Whale sighting at the bite.

We were very lucky to see whales in the bite.
The set up at the Head of the Bite is great for seeing the whales and taking photos. Well worth stopping at

It started with the super helpful attendant at the visitor centre.
Then a short walk down to viewing platforms...first to look at the awesome coastal cliffs...until my eye was drawn to the water where up to a dozen whales were frolicking between 200 to 500 metres offshore.
I put my camera away as I knew that no photo would do justice to what I was seeing.
I stayed watching the whales first almost half an hour knowing that I still had a long drive to reach my destination for the day.
Just a wonderful experience.

Such a beautiful place to visit and watch the whales play around in the bay. The paths and signage are really good, as are the vantage points to take in the scenery and do to some whale watching

Stunning views of the GAB

Stunning scenery. Nicely constructed boardwalk and interpretive signage.

I don’t normally like this sort of thing but the HoB viewing experience was awesome and a must do if crossing the Nullarbor.

Friendly staff, fantastic views! A must see

What a marvellous oasis on the Nullarbor.
First up, it offers the first clean toilets for more than 150km!
But the real jewel is the visitors centre and the walkways which provide simply stunning views of the bight and the cliff faces.
Staff at the visitors centre greet you and the entry fee is modest for the content.
The walkways are only a short walking distance and if you're not so fit or ambulant then the turn to the right still provides tremendous views without any steep climbs.
No whales were around when we visited but I imagine that whale watching from the vantage points would be a terrific experience.
An ice cream at the kiosk capped off the day. Travellers should also note this is just a 20min drive from Nullarbor Roadhouse.
We loved this place. Highly recommended.

Head of Bight is a must see when crossing the Nullarbor. Was pleasantly surprised at the views and how many whales we could see. Spent so much time taking it all in, watching and photographing the whales. A highlight of our trip and highly recommend.

Very expensive - $18 per adult

My friends and I wanted to stop in at the Head of Bight on our way across the Nullarbor.

We drove in through the entry gate towards the Bight, and quickly backed up to re-read the entrance sign.

Entry was $18 PER ADULT. We were 3 adults travelling in 1 car, so was going to cost $54 for all of us to visit the Head of Bight.

We decided that it was way too expensive for what was probably going to be a short visit (driving across the Nullarbor we had limited time to enable us to get to our next stop before dusk), so we didn’t head all the way down to the Head of Bight.

They really need to revisit the pricing either per adult or per vehicle if they want more people to stop in. It’s a steep price otherwise.

Revolting Toilets

I recently drove from Port Augusta to Head of the Bight a distance of 750 km, just to see the whales. Needless to say I couldn't get there until quite late - 4.00pm. The signs at the entry said it closed at 5.00pm however when I paid I was told that they were closing at 4.30 and I needed to be back at the shop by that time. The walk to the cliff face was 5 minutes plus so had very little time to look for whales. I was charged the full amount of $18 for about 15 minutes of viewing time. It's fairly obvious that most people have covered long distances to get there and I would suspect many come in quite late and, as in my case, are unable to hang about for another day when they'd have more time. I think a 4.30 closing is unreasonable and I think charging the full about for that short amount of time is also unfair. On top of this I had to use the toilets which were utterly repulsive, the smell was unbearable. Given that they are catering to a paying public these "long drop" toilets are quite unacceptable. I appreciate the isolation and limited water supply, however the roadhouses along the Nullabor are in a similar position and all of them are required to have flush toilets. The view from the cliffs was wonderful and I briefly saw a whale but I was so disappointed to have been given such a limited amount of time

Walkways to Enjoy the Views

Located a little way off the Eyre Highway, the Head of Bight Centre offers walkways and boardwalks to view the cliffs and whales just off the coast. The walkways are easily accessed for all fitness levels and the views spectacular. There is small cafe and some interesting storyboards. The toilets are fairly rustic which is to be expected in such a remote location.
