Conveniently located next to a carpark in Apollo Bay - and very much in the main part of town - this visitors centre does a roaring trade in tourist blah blah blah. It's Great Ocean Road city in here - grey nomad heaven.
The place does make room amongst all the merchandise to cover all the bases in terms of flyers, leaflets and general information to tell you all about your options on the road itself.
Probably best visited on a walk along the main road in town and combined with a walk along the beach.

Definitely drop in & chat to the staff about what there is to do. Staff are friendly & helpful on a good range of topics and tell them of your experiences as they are happy to get feedback

Very good maps and helpful staff. Also very clean. The gift shop was good but some of the items were not from the area.

An excellent Tourist Office. Well stocked with maps and information about Apollo Bay, the Great Ocean Road, Great Ocean Walk, the Otways and heaps more.

My wife and I stopped here for a visit during our drive from Lorne along The Great Ocean Road to Cape Otway.
We collected some maps, brochures and bought two Fridge Magnets for souvenirs.

The Great Ocean Road Visitor Information Centre in Apollo Bay is easy to find. It is on the left hand side as you drive into town if you are travelling west. There is an easy to spot blue and yellow sign and a good sized car park in front.
I arrived there around 4.30pm (the centre closes at 5.00) on the first day of my Great Ocean Road tour. It was also the Winter Solstice.
I walked in there with 3 questions I wanted advice on. Of course I asked subsidiary questions as the discussion progressed. I explained that I was staying 2 consecutive nights, and then would be returning for a third night because, at the time, the Tree Walk at the Otway Fly was closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Lady behind the counter was very helpful.
My first question was in regards to Mait's Rest. Was it easy to find, hard to get to? She assured me that it was easy. She circled it on a paper map for me. I explained that I wanted to do the rainforest walk there and that I also wanted to go there at night to see the glow worms. She said that I could go there that night. When I was hesitant to do that she suggested that I go there the following day and then return there later. That sounded like a much better plan to me (and, as it turned out, that was indeed a much better plan). She also told me that she had been there 3 times to see the glow worms but had never managed to see any.
I mentioned Marriner's Lookout which I had noticed the sign for as I drove into town. She suggested that I go there immediately to catch the sunset. I followed that advice and it was spot on.
My second question was about the Cape Otway Lighthouse. She marked that on the map for me. The turnoff was right near Mait's Rest. She marked and explained other points of interest for me to visit at Cape Otway, Blanket Bay and the Aire River campground precinct. Was there enough there to occupy a full day? She assured me there was. She was spot on.
I couldn't remember my third question. It had been a long day and I had made many stops. While I struggled to remember she proposed the key word, waterfalls. Yes, that was it, waterfalls.
She explained, and marked on the map, that as I was coming from Apollo Bay the best route for me was via Binns Rd, which is just near Mait's Rest and the Cape Otway road. That would take me to the Redwood Forest, Hopetoun Falls, (Beachamp Falls was closed to visitors at the time I was there), the Otway Fly and Triplet Falls. Again, her advice was spot on.
There is also a gift shop at the Visitor's Information Centre. There are public toilets outside but they were locked at the time I visited. As I had no urgent need to use them I did not enquire further.

We stopped here to get up to date information on the weather and road conditions and also to find out about local attractions to see. The staff where very friendly and very helpful with the information we where after.

We found the centre was great if you were looking for a place to stay or a fluffy toy but we found little to help us search out the best walks in the area. We searched for ten minutes and no assistance was offered although we were the only customers.
