Sombre location as a First World War Battlefield site and now a military cemetery. 44,000 souls are buried here in 3 mass graves. First gas attacks launched here in 1915.

Impressive cemetery. More than 44,000 German soldiers are buried here. These are numbers that are beyond anyone's imagination. The property is well maintained.

Totally different from Commonwealth graves as the black granite headstones lie horizontal. Up to 20 fallen soldiers are buried in a single grave.

Total burials 10,143 (marked graves). Comrades mass grave contains 24,917. Unidentified 3,836 (graves), 7,977 (mass grave).

At the front of the cemetery is a sculpture of 4 mourning figures added in 1956 & said to stand guard over the fallen.

The village was the scene of the 1st gas attacks by the German army on the Western front.

During WWII, Adolf Hitler visited the Ypres battlefields. He had fought here as a Corporal in WW1 & his tour included the towns of Ypres, Messines & the Cemetery at Langemark

In my opnion, Langemark was one of the most interesting places we visited on the school trip. Even though it was the last spot we went to before turning home, I believe it will stick with me for the longest.

This place was so special to me is because of the other-worldly feeling I experienced whilst standing on the soil. In spite of the fact that it looked like you were standing on a simple patch of grass, you knew there were numerous of cellars filled with dead body’s right below you. Standing on a field where 44 000 war casualties were buried, of wich 25 000 in a mass grave, awakened a very inexplicable feeling within me. It’s very unsettling knowing that these men were only a little older than we are, and died to “save” their native country. Not only did it cause this bizarre feeling, but it also turned me and a lot of other pupils sad and quiet.

The fact that we live in such great conditions today, made it unimaginable for us to imagine what it was like living during that time period. This trip has made me realise to be a lot more grateful for the state I'm able to live in.

This Tuesday (07/03/2023) we have visited Flanders Fields with school. We went to Ypres, to Hill 60 and 62 and we visited Passchendaele Museum. Another place we visited was a little museum close to Hill 62 where we could walk into reconstructed trenches. But there’s one place that I really will remember for the rest of my life, namely the Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof Langemark.

Langemark is a military cemetery in the Belgian village Langemark for fallen German soldiers from The Great War. The cemetery itself is German territory. In the middle there is a mass grave with almost 25.000 soldiers on a patch of grass and then you have a lot of gravestones on the ground in a pattern. Under some stones lays only one soldier, but under some others, you can see that there are sometimes more than 30 soldiers, mainly unknown. So I was quite shocked, because I realized that they were also just fighting for their country and trying to survive and trying to get home as soon as possible to be with their wives, fiancées, children, family and friends again. We in Belgium see the German soldiers as the enemy, but they’re just like us. The soldiers under the stones died for their country and the only honor they get is a stone with ‘VIER UNBEKANNTE DEUTSCHE SOLDATEN’. When I was at Langemark, I realized that there are always two sides from a story and that is what I always will remember.

Because of its famous history Yper, became one of the most important parts of Belgium. It is not only a very beautiful city, but you will never be bored. The main reason of the popularity of Yper, is World War 1. During the whole war, different military groups placed themselves in Yper and fought against each other. The strange thing is that Belgium was not even the biggest part of it. The war existed mostly of Germans and people from England. Yper was separated in two different parts. One of the German soldiers and the other for the soldier of England. Today those parts still exist, but are used to place all the graves on. During your visit “Langemark” is the one you must visit.

Langemark, is one of the most popular graves of Yper, and belongs to the Germans, so when you enter the grave yard you are on German ground. From the beginning you can spot a lot of differences compared to the other cemeteries. For example that it is very sober and there isn’t a lot of colour. It is very remarkable that the Germans lost the war. When you sit down and enjoy the silence, you can spot some more differences. The first thing you can notice is that all the grave stones lay down on the ground, they are also made of a different material. Something much darker and uglier.

In total there were 10 143 individual graves, that is almost whole Belgium who lays there. There are over 6.000 identified and nearly 4.000 unidentified. The horrible thing about this cemetery is that under every gravestone there can be more than one soldier. If you walk around you can see that on some grave stones there are more than 20 soldiers. If you are already shocked by this, you will find the immense mass grave at the beginning of the cemetery really terrible. There lay more soldiers than in the whole British cemetery. As a loser of the war, they didn’t have the right to have a lot of space.

For visitors, I strongly recommend doing this on a gloomy, rainy day. So you can experience the real hell those soldier needed to live in. Because you’re now standing on German land, were soldiers have suffered and needed to give their live to the British soldiers. After visiting the cemeteries, you will not leave with a happy feeling. You just have to know that it could be you fighting for your land and life.

The visit of Langemark was perhaps the most remarkable and special moment of our visit to Ypres. Langemark is the grave of the losers of the war also known as the Germans. When you arrive at Langemark you immediatly feel the difference between the German grave and the English graves. First of all the dark and black accents around the grave give a very humble vibe tot he grave. There is less respect and gratitude to this grave ,that is not only because of the black accents but also because the German soldiers don’t have their own grave. In one grave there lay around 5 people which results in a lack of respect for the soldiers and that is because they lost the war. Their grave is also less special, it is jus tan ordinary rock in the ground.

It is a very different feeling being at Langemark than at an English cemetry. Perhaps because it is a side of the war we aren’t used to. We tend to forget that multiple German soldiers had the same mindset as the English ones. Not aal of them wanted to fight ,and multiple soldiers just wanted to return home. It is because we still see the Germans as “the opposition” , we have a hard time identifying with those German soldiers. We are kind of expected to carry some kind hatred towards the Germans soldiers even though they were in a similar situation than us.

What i found most remarkable was the inside of the 2 little houses at the entrance of the cemetry. It is really confronting the small spaces the soldiers got for their name tob e engraved in, especially when you compare it to The Menin gate which is a huge monument created for soldiers who died in the same horrible circumstances as the Germans did. When you look at the graves themselves u can see that the Germans got a lot less people who visited or payed tribute. Their were less flowers, candles, etc.

For me personally Langemark wasn’t a very enjoyable monument but I truly do believe that is a must see in Ypres. The cemetry is also free of charges to visit so there is no excuse to skip this, different but very special monument

There are over more than 44,000 Germans buried in Langemark and nearly 25,000 of whom were buried in a mass grave. When I visited the Langemark cemetery, I got some loathsome assumptions. I expected it to be more insulting towards the Germans. And off course it was visible to distinguish who had won and who had lost in comparison with Tyne Cot. But those German soldiers were all innocent, just like ‘our’ soldiers were.

I found this place actually quite peaceful, and accepting. It was embellished with art pieces to remember those who have died. On the internet, I saw a picture that stood out to me. The oak trees and the flat tombstones in the sun created a soothing atmosphere, but maybe that is just my unpopular opinion.

The mass grave has made a huge impact on me. So many soldiers that just got the commemoration ‘known unto God’. And I think that is poignant. Some grieving parents that have lost their sons aren’t even sure their son is somewhere there. I can’t imagine in what an ignorance they must live.

It was a place that left you with some puzzled and varied feelings. For that reason alone, it was an highly recommended experience.

This cemetery is beautifully maintained but in contrast to the Commonwealth Cemeteries this place is dark and dreary.

Sobere Duitse massale militaire begraafplaats.
