A rahui is in place. Please respect this and stay away. Matapouri beach and the walk to Whale Bay are just as beautiful.

Hiked there around noon on March 20. We were the only people there. The pools were amazing to swim in. Crystal clear, warm water. Definitely worth visiting.

We read the negative reviews but still went anyway and are pleased we did. We didn’t see any rubbish or smell anything bad. There’s new water continuously flowing into the pool so it’s nice and fresh. Yes there’s a hike involved and my fiancé isn’t confident on the slopes but we still coped fined.

Actually, it was some of the businesses in other areas close to Matapouri that like the money and use this pool to drum up business. It was also two business people (who don't live in the area) who decided to put in a track and didn't do any proper consultation with the community or local hapu.

The locals are the ones left with the mess to clean up without much help from those businesses or from the local council. Btw it was also the council that took away the bins, not the locals.

The pool used to be great but it isn't anymore. The waters have been tested by actual scientists and they have confirmed that the water is polluted and sea life is almost non-existent. But if you don't mind swimming in other peoples muck then more power to ya.

Intersting comments, the local greenies don't like tourism. They just like the money of the tourists but don't organise anything for them. They took away the rubbish bins and now they're crying about rubbish on the beaches.
When you agree with the tourism then please offer them some infrastructure. Just writing some nonsense comments doesn't help.
And by the way, the mermaid pools are great, may during the peek season (2 months)
a little bit crowdy, but all in all a very nice place.

If the idea of a polluted rock pool is your idea of “amazing/pristine/beautiful and stunning” then this is the place to be! Those words were once the exact description of the Mermaid pools until about 15years ago!
Over 400+ people a day visit this place, that’s over 400+ products such as sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner, bodily fluids and not to mention urine going into the water and staying there and the stench of urine/defecate on the rocks and other surroundings! There is no toilet, there is no filter system, there is no plug, there is no outlet so where else do you think all this waste is going to go? Does this still sound amazing? Does this still sound like a “must see” place? And Did you know this is how much waste you have swum in or going to swim in?

But yes if swimming in someone else’s urine/body fluid or visiting the stench of urine/defecate sounds amazing to you then you will not be disappointed because it is exactly that!!!

I highly recommend not wasting your time. If that’s not off putting enough the hike just to get to the top of the man made dirt path is bad enough and then scrambling down the other side whilst trying to not fall down the cliff is even daunting! Not recommended for young children, not recommended for teens, not recommended for the 20/30/40/50/60 age groups, not recommended for the more mature and not recommended for even the most experienced climbers!

Let it relish itself back to its pristine state!

Used to be nice before it was so badly polluted. Can't think why people must use the pool as a toilet

Don't let the photos fool you. The pools have not looked like that for a long time plus the walk over is DANGEROUS. Too much rubbish left behind, sunscreen and urine in the pools has turned it into a dying ecosystem. The local iwi (tribe) have placed a rāhui (temporary close) on the pools to get them back to what they once were. I don't recommend going to this place.

Heavily polluted from the beginning of the the track, all the way up and over Rangitapu, in and around Te Wai o te Taniwha (Mermaid Pools). Do not rexommend going, leave it be to rejuvenate and replenish for the next 10 generations.
