The common electric machine to cook your marinated meat was inoperable. The staff shouted at us "Use da next one mate" I am not mate. Far from it.

Excellent camping place or day visit in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park with easy access to good facilities and supplies. Vehicle access from Terrey Hills. Very calm and picturesque.
Free roaming native animals. Excellent electric bbq and covered areas for other day-only events.
Very worthwhile trip on the ferry across from Palm Beach but get to Palm Beach early. This place can fill quickly and early

The Basin is a safe, well set up, family campground.
Situated in Kuringai Chase National Park, it is has wildlife, native bush, and lots of things for kids to do. You need to prebook your campsite, online and in advance of your visit. it cost us $100 for 2 adults and 2 x teens for two nights January 4 & 5. The rangers check your booking on arrival and frequently walk the site as well. The campground is setout on a flat area extending from the beach side on the east to the rock wall on the west.
Accessible by ferry from Palm Beach, or by road + hike* from West Head road.
We went by ferry $50 retrun for 2 x adults, 2 x teenagers. others had used a local barge for hire to deliver heaps of camping gear - 8 people max & a ton of stuff for $75 each way. other option by water would be water taxi - there are numerous mobile numbers posted at palm beach and the basin for water taxi services.
Facilities on site
toilets
showers (cold only)
bbqs - free
camp laundry and dishwashing area, which also houses numerous vending machines such as (as of january 2018)
drink vending machine - about 50% softdrink/water - accepts coins and notes
phone charging kiosk - capacity for at east 16 phones at a time - pay per phone per 15min block - i think it is $2 for 30 minute charge - automated payment machine accepts paypass & notes (not sure if it accepts coins)
snack vending machine - chips chocolate but also some healthy options
ice cream vending machine
coffee vending machine

Lovely campground with lots of space. Barbeque facilities are cleaned daily and the rangers are SO helpful - especially when you're camping in a downpour and your tent gets flooded and they let you sleep in the cottage! (Which is haunted, but that's another story)
Would have liked more campfire spots - the ones they do have are lovely for big parties or for sharing with other friendly campers. The highlight for us was probably how friendly all the other campers and rangers were!
The wildlife is insane - you will be tormented by bush turkeys and the wallabies will go inside your tent if you leave it open! They also like to poop just outside the tent opening....
Pack light cos it's an effort to get there either by ferry or walking! Great place for families as the beach and lagoon are very calm. Will go back when it's sunny!

barbecue stations, beach, great views. I chose to hike from the Basin wharf to Mackerel beach and take the ferry back from there to Palm beach. great walk with lots of bathing and beaching stops along the way. roughly 2 hours.

You will have seen from many of the other reviews that pretty much everyone agrees that this is an outstanding location.
It has a beautiful lagoon and is located right on the water. The views across to Palm Beach are great. There is a lot of interesting wildlife - goanna, wallabies, bush turkey, diamond python, kookaburras, wood duck, cockatoos, to name a few.
One tip: when booking on-line you don’t have to worry about how many tents you have, as long as you have less than 19 people per booking.
We have just returned from a fully booked out weekend at the Basin (400 people). Even though it was busy it still came across as a peaceful laid back location.
NSW National Parks do a great job managing the camp site and I strongly recommend that you visit.

I went with a group of friends to The Basin campground, we're normally used to parking the car on-site and setting up which you can't do here so it was a bit more effort for us. We used the carpark near Palm Beach ferries on Barrenjoey road, from memory it's $20 a day and you can pay in advance which is good so you don't have to pay the ferry fare daily. Ferry fare I think was roughly $15 return + $5 for luggage space per group. I paid $35 for 2 nights stay, so in the end it's a bit pricey for camping when you include the campsite, parking, and ferry.
If you have a lot of stuff it's handy to bring a trolley so you don't end up trying to carry a million things from the car, to the ferry to your camp area.
Campgrounds are beautiful, it's a really lovely setting and right on the water. Heaps of fun wildlife around and the facilities are good too. There are power points in the bathroom, I left my phone in there to charge a couple of times and it was still there when I came back. Alternatively you can pay a machine to charge your phone in a secure lock up. Also a little shop that's open for an hour on site that sells bait and ice.
Rangers are hella strict! My friends and I are in our 20's so we wanted to enjoy some drinks and music at night, we got a warning for this so be sure to head down to the basin so you don't disturb anyone. It's definitely more for families but I still enjoyed my stay.

We hopped on the ferry over to the Basin today. Lots of people camping. A vacation care kids day out there too. We loved seeing the goannas and the wallabies intermingling with the visitors. The water is very safe for kids and is an ideal day out when in Sydney.

Hardly 20 min ride by ferry from Palm beach and you land up in this serene location. ($16.40 return for adult and $3.00 park entry fee). Perfect for camping, you need to book through Ku ring gai council though (Around $18 pp and min 2 people si what I gathered from the information sheet). We went their for a sunday picnic in 44 deg of heat. Surrounded by shallow salty water helped us to cool down. The place was buzzing with families but still did not feel crowded at all. lots of trees for shade and a huge shed with multiple bbq right next to the water. You will find people in water with floating toys, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming or simply relaxing in the water. There is a kayak hire shop there if you wanna hire one. Laundry, cold water showers, toilets, drinking water, Icecream and drinks vending machine, phone charging booths everything is there. But if you are a tea or coffee lover I would say BYO and do not rely on the coffee/tea vending machine provided. we tried to make chai latte twice and all we got was some watered down frothed milk, was very disappointing, what a waste of $6.00. There is no phone connection but at some points you do get weak connections so the helpline no on coffee vending machine was useless. There are few walking tracks but we didn't do it this time coz of the heat, may be next time. Late afternoon we came face to face with couple of Goannas, lazing around ducks and a hoping wallaby who was chased by all these young children, felt like the Wallaby was having more fun then the children, making them run after him. There are more animals that visit the site but we didn't stay that late. All in all AWSM day heaps of things to do and watch. A place where people of all age can enjoy. My boys 5 and 7 were already asking me that day if they can come back there again soon. Smokers are a big issue for me and I only saw one lady smoking in the common shed area and she didn't seem to care that she had young children around her. But guess thats the trait of a smoker, they do not care.
But in a nutshell if you wanna relax, enjoy or sleep in and wanna get away from the hussle and bussle of the life this the place to be. If you can't manage camping I would highly recommend a day out here by yourself or with your family or friend but not your animal friends.
