If you want to learn a bit about the history of Slovenia (from 1914), this national museum is a must.

Located on the fringe of Tivoli Park, it's easily in walking distance from the Old Town. Opens at 10, and entrance for me (as an adult) was 6€. At the time of my visit, the ground floor exhibition was closed, but as I was really here to see the main exhibition, that was not too much of an issue.

Slovenia has a complex relationship with its history, being surrounded by nations that were once part of historic empires or (personal opinion), despotic regimes. The account of the First World War is well told, though I found the interpretation boards that tried to explain what happened politically in the aftermath somewhat confusing as you would be reading about, say 1920, and then the next paragraph would be back in 1918. More chronology please! Likewise, the account of World War II was also very interesting and gave a good idea of the complexities involving partisan fighters, communist supporters, fascist sympathisers and the wicked problems that confronted the allies. Also (though a bit hidden away) is an attempt to confront the atrocities that occurred as the war came to a close.

The social history in the post war era is again a bit harder to understand. Sometimes less is more; some of the rooms have walls that are so busy they almost assault the senses: I never really got to understand why Yugoslavia avoided being fully integrated in the Soviet Bloc. I would love to get into that section and rework it a bit. That said, the English on the interpretation is of a very high standard throughout, and for me interesting to see the tail section of the Gazelle helicopter that I recall seeing on the front page of British newspapers as reports came in of Slovenia's struggle to break away.

But spend a couple of hours here, you will get a good idea of where Slovenia stood during the seismic events of the 20th century, and how this forward looking country embraces it's status within the EU.

This is a great place to visit if you’re interested in the history of Slovenia. It maps out the last 100 years or so and goes a long way to explain the complex history of this beautiful country

We visited this museum as a companion visit to the National History Museum of Slovenia. The ground floor is dedicated to the achievements of Slovenian athletes. There’s quite a lot of exhibition space given over to WWI and WWII, not surprising given how the two world wars shaped Slovenia. The communist era exhibition may be nostalgic for some locals, but definitely has some horrific stories on par with the Axis occupation. The exhibition of Slovenian history ends with her ascension to the EU. Welcome to the European family, Slovenia!

The exhibits are high quality and will no doubt engender civic pride in Slovenian identity. All the exhibits have English descriptions as well as Slovenian. There’s also currently a special exhibition on Ukrainian refugees.

We visited in a Saturday morning. It was very quiet and relaxed. The displays were well organized and labeled. Most had descriptions in English included. The first level had Olympic and professional athlete’s’ memorabilia. There were props for young to experience equipment. Many interactive exhibits on this level. The second level covered the 20th c. Learned a lot

Slovenia has a very interesting history. It is presented here in a fashion that seems like it hasn’t been updated since the 1990s

The displays are visually cluttered and a confusing jumble.

The atmosphere is deadly boring and depressing.

The museum certainly does not represent best or even average museum display.

Museum has interesting presentation of the Slovenian history but with no big improvements in the last two years. Temporary presentations are less interesting. Plečnik’s exhibition is far better in Mestni muzej (City museum) and in Etnographic museum in Metelkova.

Fab museum focusing on the complex history of Yugoslavia and Slovenia. The museum is modern with lots of information and easy to follow as the exhibitions are in date order with maps and interesting pieces. Great place to visit, having visited most of the ex-Yugoslav capitals this was the best museum we found to explain the history of the region. Well worth a visit!
