Budapest è stata una piacevole sorpresa: ero partita un po' perplessa perchè conosco poche persone che ci sono state e non è comunque una delle mete più ricercate. Ebbene....mi sbagliavo! e' una città bellissima, con molte cose da vedere e molto da godere. Noi poi, essendo un gruppetto di sessantacinquenni, non pagavamo nessun mezzo pubblico e usarli è stata una gioia: mai un'attesa superiore ai 4 minuti, mai affollatissimi e soprattutto pulitissimi!. La gente del posto non è particolarmente accogliente, ma per fortuna tutti i negozianti parlano inglese, a ltrimenti sarebbe un guaio: l'ungherese è incomprensibile! Sono rimasta affascinata dalle immense piazze e dalle strade molto ampie e dai tantissimi locali dove si fanno delle colazioni superbe. Quindi consiglio a tutti di andarci almeno una volta nella vita!

Started off with the hop on hop off bus tour which showed you all the sites to see. We went on a night time boat cruise which is best as everything is then lit up. We also went to the Szechenyi Baths for a half day these were fantastic, I believe there were 27 different pools of different sizes and temperatures. The Citadel, Old Town, Houses of Parliament are all worth a visit. The food and drink in the restaurants was good and probably cheaper than in Britain.

01.07.2023 обратились на стойку с просьбой проверить наши билеты. Сотрудник в грубой форме отказал нам проверить билеты. Разговаривала на повышеннах тонах, возле остальных людей, которые всё слышали. Мы были в шоке таким отвратительным поведением сотрудника. Абсолютно не воспитанный и невежественный человек. Просим руководства разобраться в данной ситуации и проявить строгие меры по отношению к соруднику. Фото сотрудника прилагаем.

Premetto che Budapest è stupenda, ma purtroppo per spostarci nella città di Cluj-Napoca in Romania abbiamo dovuto prendere il treno in partenza alle 22.45. Ho passato due ore in quella stazione seppure affascinante ma ormai vetusta, mi ha lasciato un senso di inquietudine da ricordare. Però alla fine a parte qualche zingaro che cercava spiccioli e un pazzo che gridava per non so cosa, non ci è successo nulla

The decaying grandeur of this station is matched by its bureaucracy. Hungary was previously in the second (communist) world. Now by joining the EU it aspires to the first world. But Keleti station is mired in the third world.
To obtain the obligatory reservation for my eurail pass ticket to Bucharest I had to select an action on a touch screen outside the ticket office (the only modern part of the procedure) to get a number, then wait outside till my number was called. Then a security guard admitted me to the ticket office and directed me to a window where a clerk checked my phone ticket and issued a paper reservation (no online reservations available). Job done.
But what a cumbersome and inefficient way to go about it. I suspect it is a hangover from the communist era. Still, compared to other travellers I had it easy. I didn't get robbed, and I avoided the taxi racket by using the modern efficient metro. On the bright side, the train was modern, clean and on time.

as the main train station you need to be aware of 2 things 1- the time table moves fast and is updated constantly
2- the train leaves on time TO THE MINUTE
the area has lots of food places to eat before/after your on the train and easily accessible by public transport.

Huge train station with undoubted Soviet design. Links all over the country as well as internationally. Easy to navigate around, connects to the MTR and trams/bus. Tons of F&B nearby. Ticket booths, and if needed, ticket counters.

The Keleti Train Station is the largest station in Budapestand and is located very close to Budapest’s city centre.
The building was constructed in eclectic style somewhere between 1881 and 1884 and is of interesting architecture. We found it clean and easy to get around.
As a first class passenger on Railjet we had access to the lounge which served some nice snacks and drinks and made our wait for the train comfortable.

The 1880s Keleti Station has not been updated in a long time, so I am not sure how equipped they are for wheelchairs. They do mention on their website that they DO accommodate people in wheelchairs and help with getting on trains. I know this train station has a tourist office inside and that is where you should seek assistance according to the website. I don't know if you can request help in advance online and may have to do so once you arrive. Best wishes.

I will be traveling by train from Budapest to Bratislava. I know that I will start at Keleti station in Budapest and I think that I will end up at the Hlavná stanica", station in Bratislava. Is this correct?
I am new to train travel in Europe and am nervous since I do not speak the language. I am not sure how to go about and purchase the ticket. I would prefer to purchase in advance if that is possible.
I would be most appreciative if someone can provide advice. Thanks.

I bought tickets there and it was very cheap

Lockers are located in a room near the buffer stops at the near end of platform 9. There are large and small lockers, most accepting Forint coins, a few accepting euro coins.There is a change machine if you only have Forint notes. There is an ATM for cash withdrawals right next to the internet ticket collection machine.
A good place to wait for your train over an inexpensive meal, coffee or beer in grand surroundings inside the station is the Baross restaurant in the corner near the buffer stops on platform 6, usually open 8am to 8pm, credit cards accepted.
The First class lounge is open until 9:30 pm. I don't know about the other coffee and food stands.

I just did a quick search on the Austrian rail website and found at least six train departing on a Sunday morning, price ranging from 19-59 euros/person. I suggest you check out the oebb website.
