A sad stark place of mass murder, but an important Holocaust memorial site. It is an important place to visit for those interested in the Jewish history of Latvia, and the Holocaust.

This place enforces the message of never forget how evil people can be to others.

Perhaps not on the scale of other Jewish mass murder site, it does show how widespread the atrocities were.

Mounds marking burn pits and respectful markers for lives lost.

I feel like this is a hidden historical site. Not sure if it is normally this way or because of the weather the day we went. Quiet place to reflect on what happened at this location

A place of death. We visited to commemorate the 25,000 victims of the Nazis who lost their lives in just two day. Now the place is a quiet path between upright markers in the places of mass graves. The center has a large menorah with memorial stones. You must read up on this place as there is no on site interpretation. It is a place of remembrance, silence, and weeping. It begs the question, "What is human?"

A bit tricky to find but there is a short cut if you coming by train. When you get off in Rumbula (It’s in the middle of nowhere) ) you follow the track about 200 meters north. You can then spot some small concrete stairs to your left. That’s the unofficial entrance to the memorial.
The Memorial is not big but I think it’s necessary to be reminded of the Holocaust. I liked the place. It should be on the top 10 places to visit in Riga.

It memorizes the victims of Holocaust. Right around there is a railway for the trains trasporting people to the forest. Very moving and worth visiting.

It is not easy, but it is important to visit, pay your respects and understand never again. A place of reverence and quiet.

No memorial can do justice to the atrocities committed here or to the victims who were murdered, but as a memorial to remind the living of the worst that humans can do to humans, Rumbula is exceptional.

The event itself is inconceivable. Row after row day after day from 30 November - 8 December 1941, in a well planned and executed conveyor belt of slaughter, innocent men, women and children were lined up and murdered coldly and methodically by the Nazis and their collaborators bullet by bullet layer upon layer in the open pits which became mass graves. Over those nine days 25,000 innocents were executed at Rumbula. How is it possible for humans to do this to other humans?

Perhaps most haunting of all was climbing the stairs from the train track to the killing ground. My understanding is that the victims were force marched the 10 kilometers from the Riga Ghetto to Rumbula, with a few elderly or infirm trucked in, but these train tracks recalled for me the tracks leading to Auschwitz-Birkenau – built because the murderous methods deployed in the Baltics were not efficient enough.

The descriptive information at the site is pretty spare. A couple of tombstone-like plaques at the entrance in Latvian, English, German, and Hebrew provide an overview of the massacre and the creation of the memorial, so reviewing the Wikipedia entry or another source for the horrifying details of this crime is valuable for those who want more. That said, the reverence of the site speaks volumes. The path through the woods to the memorial is both peaceful and foreboding. The memorial structure itself -- the Star of David topped by a menorah – commemorates the dead. The star is formed from stones engraved with the names of the slaughtered and the streets of the Riga Ghetto. The concrete bordered mass graves surrounding the memorial give you a small sense of the slaughter’s scale.

We drove there on our way to Liepaja and missed the entrance because we did not know to look for the dark metal ensnaring-vine-like structure reaching out from the entrance to the edge of the highway at the turnoff, but our GPS gave us good directions. You can also get there by bus.

The Rumbula Forest Memorial is truly a place for reflection on what we humans can do at our worst and what we must do to prevent such atrocities in the future.

Fastest way to monument is...when you get out of train...turn right and walk by side if track...toward rear of train. In about 250 meters you will see a small path on left leading into forest. This is path leading directly into monument grounds. A wonderful monument to a mind-boggling event. A somber place.

It is very easy to get to Rumbula from Riga Centre, if you go on the train it costs approx 2 euro return - great value for money. However, when you get off the train in Rumbula there is no direction on where to go for the memorial. Basically if you head accross the tracks and follow the dirt track to the main road, once you get on the main road take a right and keep walking for approx 8 mins, you will then see a metal statue, turn right again and head up the path, over the car park and you will see the memorial. It is such a lovely tribute to an horrific event which took place. Only takes a few minutes to go round but worth the look.
The trains aren't that regular so we decided to head back on the road and caught the local bus back to the centre, which again was very cheap about 1.5 euro's.
