Attended a wedding here, fantastic place, love to look around castles, the host was a beautiful lady who explained a lot of the history & the work carried out on it, rooms were fantastic, unfortunately we didn’t have time to walk around the gardens & grounds, but what we saw was amazing. Will probably visit again & try to see more. Beautiful location too

We looked up these ruins online and got directions there. The directions seemed to take us to the local primary school and there was no signage of the actual castle.
Eventually, after some delving online, we walked up a narrow, boggy path to the ruins.
They were worth walking to see but it isn't straightforward to get to.

These ancient ruins are the stuff of poetic inspiration, especially seen on wet days when the very elements conspire to add eerie drama!

Read the ancient Castle Towards's heartbreak history before to go; clan villainy, massacre and horrific betrayals, proof that nothing much has changed re man's inhumanity to man.

The nearby 19th century castle of the same name, was once a residential school where, decades ago, I was a student. What fun to live in a CASTLE! Explore local glens and valleys, wander bracken-covered hills.

Sadly local political wrangling, short sighted power plays (think Brexit) appear likely to let the imposing castellated mansion house, badly in need of urgent funding and restoration, crumble to dust.

Pity!

A great location overlooking Bute with fascinating archirecture and beautiful set in spacious grounds. Access still possible near the pier and yacht club area. Some of the buildings are still in use however most are deteriorating rapidly.

Castle toward residential centre (as was) is now closed, but there is lots in the grounds to make a real few hours/day trip of.
It's not and never has been a tourist site, there's no plaques etc. But it's steeped in history and adventure, be sure to read up on the history before going to really make the most of the site.
Parking at the castle you can see the ha-ha still on the main lawn and imagine how the house was originally used. Expect to see wild rabbits or even deer on the lawn.
The grounds also have the old nissan huts from when it was used at HMS Brontosaurus. All this is on flat ground and easily accessible.
A short walk through the woods and Toward castle (ruins) are a large and wonderful site to explore, a quick google for stories of the Lamont family are a wonderful addition to understanding the ruins. They're overgrown but you can easily see rooms and turrets etc
You can also walk up to and around the dam and a number of hilltops from the car park, depending on your bravery they can take an hour or a whole day.
Toward Quay is across the road and a great spot for photography or rock pooling.
There is a lot here, all free and with a little prep before you could it's a wondeful day out. Without the prep, go see the house, wander round the ground and appreciate the view from the Quay

I visited here some 35 short years ago as a Glasgow school staying at the residential school. Fond memories from a bygone age of interactive education.
This was my first time back and it's bitter sweet. The old school building is closed up and the grounds are beginning to fall into disarray but the grandure of the place is undiminished. I think they could have filmed parts of Harry Potter or Game of Thrones in this historic school it's that unique.
A short nature walk and you will find the old ruins of the Castle where you can still venture into the vaults. A great place to visit on a nice day and it'll be interesting to see what happens with the place when the new owners take it on.

Finally after many years of meaning to go, I made it for a walk around Castle Toward, the old castle ruins and the surrounding grounds.

In some ways it's a very sad place. The Castle Toward Residential School stands empty, waiting for a purchaser to come along and revitalise the site. It was extremely short sighted of the council to refuse the attempts by the local community to buy it. What a wonderful place it could be, run by and for the community for its benefit and profit. It's also in a prime location to be transformed into an exclusive hotel, again providing jobs and economic benefit for the community. Sadly, a misguided council will no doubt sell it to the highest bidder for the lot to be razed and unnecessary modern homes to be built over the entirety.

Whilst you still have time, a visit is well worth it. Beyond Castle Toward lies the ruins of the original castle and small courtyard. Much of this is fallen brickwork and stones, however is still possible to climb down into the vaults of the castle. Beyond this are beautiful wooded areas for long walks. A small gem of peace and tranquility, not to be missed.

We went as school class from Scotland Road primary School for a month this was in 1951 I was 10 at the time our teacher Mr Finley organised it we travelled by bus and ferry and as most of the kids had never left the street they were born in this was an adventure even though it still was school lived in dormitories and for most there were baths to wash in three cooked meals a day and at dinner last table finished had to help with the washing up if there were any sweets left you got to eat them
As well as lessons in the classrooms there were nature walks/walks along the pebbly beach and on Saturday you went along the beach near the ferry jetty to spend sixpence on sweeties bad luck if you misbehaved during the week you did not go.
It is one thing that I still remember from my young life before we migrated to Australia in 1954
Mr Finley was a dedicated teacher and done many things for us poor kids that did not have much after the war as well as Toward Castle the school camps the zoo and other outings many paid for himself not many teachers like him

My experience was a fulfilment of a life long quest in finding my ancestral history from Australia to the original castle on the grounds as a descendent of the Lamont clan. It was a typical rainy grey day and I could not have been happier to be where my forefathers had once so tragically been.
The care taker of the newer castle/ school was very helpful and only to happy to have a descendent from Australia visiting whom had knowledge of the history of the building and grounds even though it was raining.
