This is the highway that connects Fairbanks to Anchorage. Passes through Denali National Park. Leaving 4 out of 5 stars because the restrooms at the rest areas need better maintenance from the state of Alaska.

Oh the many highways in Alaska. They are all so gorgeous and unique in their own way. This particular one holds my heard because it is the way to my favorite place in Alaska, Denali National Park. Make sure you stop off on Talkeetna Spur Road and walk around cute downtown Talkeetna on your way up to Denali on the George Parks Highway. Also, stop in at one of the campgrounds of Denali STATE park on the way as well to view Denali from a different angle. I prefer the North View Campground myself. As with all the roads in Alaska you will experience some bumps from the frost heaves in the road from permafrost thawing and refreezing under the surface, but all in all the roads are pretty good considering. Alaska is very easy to navigate. The views along the road are beautiful and I saw more moose along this road than any other highway in Alaska, once you get closer to Healy.

This is THE highway you have to use to go to Denali State Park from Anchorage. It takes you to Fairbanks in the north. The scenery is just breath taking.

I drove from Fairbanks to Talkeetna, roughtly 275 miles. This was absolutely the most breathtaking and beautiful drive I have ever taken in my life. Being someone who has driven across the lower 48 (West & East, North & South), this beats all of those drives by a landslide. There was constant scenery once you get about an hour outside of Fairbanks and it doesn't stop. You can see Mt McKinley at various points. There is lots of wildlife to be seen as well and you drive through very tiny towns that are just cool and surreal to see especially if you're from a populated city or from the lower 48. I HIGHLY reccommend anyone visiting Fairbanks or Anchorage to drive this highway city to city or at least to Denali.

This highway provides access to the Denali National Park and Denali State Park. By itself, the highway is not too scenic but connects you to very scenic parts of Alaska.
Worthwhile stops include:
- Mile 134: Denali South Viewpoint: offers nice views of Denali from the south
- Mile 147: Alaska Veteran’s Memorial: rest area with small visitor’s center
- Mile 162: Denali North Viewpoint: nice views of Denali from the south
- Mile 237: Denali National Park entrance
- Mile 240: Denali town: many places to stay and eat

My wife and I travelled along the George Parks Highway during our escorted ‘Natural Wonders of Alaska’ tour with Titan Travel. Our journey by motor coach took us from Denali to McKinley View Lodge where we stopped for a comfort break and refreshments before continuing our journey south to Wasilla for our 1 night stay on a room only basis at the Grand View Inn and Suites. We continued the rest of our journey along the highway the following morning before joining the Glenn Highway 35 miles (56 km) north of Anchorage which took us into Anchorage. Our knowledgeable tour manager explained that this highway, usually called the Parks Highway, runs for 323 miles (520 km) between it's junction with the Glenn Highway to Fairbanks. It runs parallel with the Alaska Railroad and was completed in 1971. It was known originally as the Anchorage-Fairbanks Highway and is also known as Interstate A-4 and Alaska Route 3. It's was renamed the George Parks Highway in 1975 in honour of George Alexander Parks, the territorial governor of Alaska from 1925 to 1933.
We had the highway relatively to ourselves and were fortunate to be travelling on clear sunny days with spectacular views in all directions through the tinted windows of our motor coach. Among the highlights I enjoyed along this highway between Denali and Anchorage were:
- impressive road bridges such as the Hurricane Gulch Bridge crossing the Nenana River near Denali.
- the amazing views of the Alaska Range including the peaks of Goldie, Hunter, Mather and Silverthorne from McKinley View Lodge. Denali, the highest peak in the Denali National Park and Preserve and also in North America, was unfortunately covered by cloud but I could appreciate it's size, height and beauty from the excellent photographs on display inside McKinley View Lodge.
- our visit to the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Headquarters near Wasilla which has a fascinating museum, gift shop and offered dog cart rides!
- the stunning Matanuska-Sustina Valley north of Anchorage which includes the valleys of the Matanuska, Sustina as well as the Knik Rivers.
I enjoyed my memorable journey along sections of the scenic Parks Highway especially the spectacular views of stunning landscapes, our convenient lodge for refreshments and our comfortable hotel, and our visits to places to learn more about wonderful Alaska!

This highway goes from Anchorage to Fairbanks. We drove it over two days, with a stop at Denali. We have traveled many scenic byways all over the US, and maybe I am jaded, but I was expecting more interesting scenery. It was just typical highway until we passed Wasilla. After that, there were a few lakes and miles of spruce forest. It was a cloudy day, so we could not see any mountains that were in the distance. The best scenery for us was around Denali State Park and Denali National Park. The drive between Denali and Fairbanks did not have as many mountains, however the Tanana River was scenic and the elevated "Skyline Drive" section (mile 338) had nice views. There aren't a lot of services along this road, so start with a full gas tank and take food or plan ahead for where you can stop to get it. Some sections of pavement are bumpy due to frost heaves and road patches.

I drove the Parks Highway from Anchorage (Wasilla, technically) to Fairbanks, AK, in Winter (March 2016 - a very warm dry winter). The road is mostly a 2 lane highway. Some stretches are wide and smooth. Others are narrower, potholed and rolling thanks to the frost heaving. It took about 7 hours with few stops. Anchorage to Denali National Park is about 4.5 hours.
Gas has limited availability: Wasilla, Willow, Trapper Creek, Cantwell, Healy and Nanana.
The area between Willow and the Trapper Creek has the best views of Denali (mountain).
There are many great views through trees and with few well marked pull-outs. In winter, this is complicated by buried signs and snowmachiners and their rigs filling the pull-outs.
I had clear weather and enjoyed much of the drive, but it was not the beauty of the Paradise Valley, Montana drive into Yellowstone, Jackson Hole north to Grand Teton or into Saguaro NP.
In summer, it is very congested. So plan to have everything you need, including toilet paper (in case one of the frequent accidents shuts the road down and grid locks you) and gas up often.
