Only two ways to do the trail. 1: booking everything months on advance, or 2: pay big bucks to a tour company. Otherwise every tour will be sold out and the Bourbon Trail is a series of gift shops on your way out of Kentucky.

I recently did the Kentucky Bourbon Trail as my 2023 Spring Break trip, and I had planned this trip about 9-10 months in advance. I felt that it was highly average, and I quickly tired of the repetitive nature of the various distilleries. I only ended up doing about 5 of the distilleries because they just felt too similar for me--very similarly tasting products, very similar tours, even the items in the gift shops were very similar with the name of that specific distillery. Also, I can only drink so much, and I found that I frequently needed to take a "break" and find other things to do for a while, such as visiting area museums, etc. I don't know how some of these people aren't feeling like crap after going to 15-20 or more distilleries! I did really enjoy going to Maker's Mark, Jim Beam, and Woodford Reserve, but I just got bored with the whole concept kind of quickly, and I couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed in this trip. I spent my Spring Break week in South Dakota last year, and I had much more fun there exploring the outdoors--i.e. Badlands and Black Hills, and I often felt like I was "missing" that experience. Maybe I am just missing something?? If I were to return to the Bourbon Trail area, I wouldn't devote so much of my trip to it, and I would just dedicate a day or two to this area tops, instead of the 4 days I allotted on this trip. On the plus side, I enjoyed having daily temperatures between about 55-70 instead of 35-45 like back home in Wisconsin! To each their own, I guess.

We spent 3 days traveling the Kentucky Bourbon Trail last August. We spent 1 day in Louisville, one day travelling south east of Louisville, and one day near Lexington. Over the 3 days, we took 6 official tours of the Bourbon-Making process and just visited some other sites to taste-test or purchase bourbons.
We took tours at: Rabbit Hole and Angel's Envy in Louisville, James Bean and Maker's Mark southeast of Louisville, and Bulleit and Four Roses closer to Lexington. By far, the most informative tour of the bourbon making process was at Rabbit Hole, so if you can only do one, make sure it is this one. You will find out more about the process of making bourbon than at any of the other distilleries. James Bean was also interesting because one got to see how a high volume distillery runs. And Bulleit Distillery was distinctive for the innovative and labor-saving barrel storage system they use.
All the taste-testing were also very interesting and each company seemed to have their own special way of making this fun. Lots of fun, even for someone not normally a bourbon drinker.
Again, we took only 3 days and visited 10 distilleries and took 6 tours. You could plan 5 days if you really want to do this justice and visit more of the distilleries on the Bourbon Trail.

The trip was great, and the communication from the team was fantastic. We hit every spot we wanted to and our driver Sheryl was great.

Great food and bourbon. Tours each different and informative. If you do not drink bourbon, you can still enjoy the tour. Loved looking around Bardstown as lots of history there.

I almost gave this a 5 but there were a few glitches. Be sure and call to be sure where you want to go is open. Websites say one thing, and reality sometimes said another. We didn’t take any tours, so that gave us a chance to see more places. And some are so scenic you don’t need a long tour. Plan your route ahead of time… and be flexible to make changes as they come along.

My wife and I traveled from Texas and wanted to taste a variety of bourbons. Thank you to Lux Row for being one of the few places to offer a flight of samples. To the places that only want to offer a special "experience" by going through tour after tour... I am not interested in your product. We are going back to the Tennessee Whiskey Trail next vacation.

First time doing the bourbon trail. Although I am not a drinker it was still a lot of fun. I enjoyed visiting the copperage and seeing how the barrels are made and prepared for businesses world wide. The grounds of all the distilleries were very easy to maneuver for my husband who uses a scooter. We didn’t get to visit all the businesses so we will have to come back. Even if you don’t drink it’s a fun trip. We actually visited in October 2019.

Although, I was not able to go into all the distilleries, I had a great time. The covid-19 had shut down many places and some you were not able to taste or do a tour. Beautiful country!

Bourbon trail in a weekend: Friday 4 distilleries, Sat 4 Distilleries, Sunday 3. Started in Knoxville and traveled up to Lexington for our first stop at Lexington Brewing & Distillery Co Town Branch. Tour time 10am. Then we traveled to Woodford reserve with tour time 12. My wife got use lunch food to go at Glenns creek cafe at Woodford. Traveled to next stop Four Roses Distillery tour time 2:00. Finished day at Wild Turkey Distillery at 4pm. Stayed at Hampton Inn in Frankfort, KY that night.
Next day started early at Buffalo Trace (ITS FREE) and our tour was at 9am. Then we traveled to Evan Williams downtown Louisville on Main street tour time 11:20 (parking located next to building for $6). At this point if you are all about the stamps you could have one person tour and the other go get stamps at other distilleries downtown). Next stop Bulliet Stitzel Weller Distillery with tour time 1pm. Off to American Stillhouse Jim Bean with tour time 3:30 (we were there earlier than that but they had no openings for a tour, just FYI you could schedule probably at 3). Saturday night we stayed in Bardstown KY at Bourbon Manor B&B. We ate that night at Rickhouse Restaurant & lounge (need a reservation for this one we did 6:30--also an option in town they have a dinner train but it leaves at 4:30--we couldn't make it).
Sunday Started at Bardstown Bourbon Company (beautiful place-has lunch that starts at 11:30 very fancy) Tour time 10. Next Bourbon Heritage Center 12:15 tour and ended the day at Makers Mark at 2pm tour.
The whole thing was so fun with most expensive tour ticket at Woodford $20. We got 11 of 17 distilleries in one weekend.

Is there one location that is convenient to the bulk of the distilleries? We 're hoping to do 3 days and would prefer to stay in one accommodation for our trip in September.

You could stay in either Shelbyville, KY or Frankfort, KY the whole time, but that would involve a ton of driving each day, especially to the distilleries south of Louisville. I would not recommend this, but obviously it is up to your own personal desires.

I am looking to a trip soon but a lot of the tours have been filled. Is it possible to taste and enjoy without a tour time reserved?
