This was such a cool drive and I’m so glad we ended up heading this way! Picked up some company in Billings, went to red lodge for lunch and headed through Lamar valley to Gardiner.
I’ve been on some amazing drives including million dollar highway and trail ridge road and this compares for sure! Spots to stop are easy and breathtaking, area to explore and run around(for my kids) and views!!!
Loved every part of this drive!!

The bear tooth highway is an engineering marvel, but why? It goes from Red Lodge Montana to an intersection in the middle of nowhere on Rt 296 in Colorado. Ostensibly, it cuts the distance from Red Lodge to Yellowstone National Park, but I'm not sure it saves much time, given the speed limit through most of the hairpin turns is 20mph. All told it takes more than an hour to travel. But so what? The trip is a great drive. The scenery is nice, but nothing you won't see on plenty of other high mountain passes in the Rocky Mountains at 11,000 feet. Go for the drive, not the view.

While staying by Yellowstone National Park, we took this highway up to Beartooth Pass. If you have extra time on your trip, make sure that you drive this! Scenery is spectacular! Fun drive! We also went thru Lamer Valley and saw lots of bison and went to Cooke City for a little shopping and snacks.

The views are so amazing it is difficult to describe. It looked a little like Yosemite at the top. Be prepared for tight turns and steep cliffs on both sides of the range.

This truly is an amazing road. I'm so glad we drove this highway. The views are Stunning. We traveled from Red Lodge towards Cooke City (North entrance to Yellowstone). It took us 4 hours with a short picnic lunch stop. I was told by locals that if you don't stop at all, you can do it in 2 hours. I wouldn't recomend taking a camper thru this road. The roads just drop off with only a small guardrail on the side. Lots of pull offs. I will say, the stops are not well marked. You can look at a map and see a lake on the map but when you saw the lake on the road, it wasn't labeled very well. This made it hard to determine where you were on the road. Also, there was the Clay Butte Lookout Tower which was supposed to be a 3 mile gravel road to the top but just under 1/2 way up the road, it was closed. No sign at the beginning to tell you. You may want to check somehow to see if the road is open before starting the gravel climb. Also, there are not a lot of picnic stops so if you plan to eat lunch at a picnic table, your only options are at the "Top of the Mountain" store which had several picnic tables. Otherwise, there are a few campgrounds you can go into to find a picnic table. No other picnic stops along the road. The Top of the Mountain store was a nice souvenir shop that also sold snacks. The highest point on the road we saw was 10,947. We were told the temp at the highest point is about 20 degrees colder than the bottom of the mountain. For us it was only about 67 degrees in July. Since we were camping in Red Lodge, after driving the 4 hours thru the Beartooth Highway, we then had to return back to Red Lodge. We went thru the Chief Joseph Highway back to Red Lodge which had less switchbacks but also extremely beautiful. It still took 2 hours to return to Red Lodge. This makes for a long day. Definitly put this on your bucket list to see. You won't regret it.

If you're on a motorcycle, you absolutely must do this road. I didn't know about it until I was in the neighbourhood, but spectacular- lives up to everything written about it.

My husband and I along with friends road Beartooth Highway in 2014. We also rode it a couple of years before that. From the back of our motorcycle the views were awesome. I think it is one of the best highways ever. The scenery was absolutely breath taking.

Amazing views! Highly recommend driving Beartooth Highway! Great scenery, we saw mountain goats, & the stop towards the top - Vista Point- was so cool! Chipmunks everywhere & so cute. If you can stop ahead of time & bring sunflower seeds I bet you’d be very popular.

I have been a passenger down the Zion park switchbacks, the pacific coastal highway from Carmel to LA, and the road to Muir woods. Zion didn’t bother me much, the PCH gave me high blood pressure but I would do it again. I HATED the road to Muir woods. How does Bear Tooth pass compare to any/all of these?
Skrevet 11. august 2020
Sorry, I'm just now seeing your question. I've only been on the PCH and it didn't scare me. I've not been on the others you have mentioned. But I grew up in the high mountains of MT and this was definitely high. The roads are well-maintained, but it's nearly 11K feet above sea level, so it might be overwhelming for you. But just remember, you can take your time, pull off to let cars pass you, on the many pull off areas along the way...And remember that once you get to the top, you'll be heading down again! :)
I wouldn't go at the beginning of the season or towards the end, just because snow storms are more likely...not saying that they can't happen any other time during the summer...just more likely at the beginning or end.
It's closed now until next summer. When you go, safe travels!

We will be staying in Cooke City for three nights which is just part of our 14 day Yellowstone/Teton vacation in late June 2021. We were hoping to drove the Beartooth one day. I had a few questions.
1. What time of day is better to travel the road, obviously not night, but is the morning too foggy?
2. If we didn’t travel all the way to Red Lodge, what is a good turn around point? Vista Point or should we travel further?
Any advice is appreciated. TIA

So sorry. I haven't been into my Trip Advisor account for months. I hope you did the trip and I hope you enjoyed it. If you didn't let me know and I'll try to answer for you. :)

We're planning a Yellowstone vacation in the first week of October - an unusual school vacation week threads the needle between summertime crowds and snow closures. I drove the Beartooth Pass 25 years ago and wanted to share with the family - I was thinking about spending most/all of a day driving from Yellowstone, probably to about Rock Creek Vista (per advice on other threads asking about a there and back day-trip from Yellowstone) and making most of the stops along the way.
Questions:
- I know that we're flirting with end of season closure, so there's no guarantees. Is there anywhere that has year-by-year historical closure dates posted so we can guess the odds? I couldn't find it
- When we're on the ground, what's the best way of getting highway status/weather info? My understanding is Yellowstone has dismal cell service.
- Even if the highway is open, is it likely to be miserable for sightseeing that time of year?
- Anyone on here travel the highway right at end of season and able to comment from 1st hand experience?
Thanks!

Hello,
Here's a good link for checking MT road conditions, scroll down and see Beartooth HWY:
I 'm not allowed to put a link here, so here's the path, so Google: Traveler Information - Montana Department of Transportation>Detailed Report>Scroll to US-212 and see info on the Beartooth HWY
And you can put their phone number as your contact, (1-800-226-7623 or dial, 511).
I use this service to check the roads when I travel across the state.
However, like you said, some places do not have cell phone service coverage...

We will be staying in a condo in West Yellowstone next August. We will be on a motorcycle and would love to do Bear Tooth Highway from East to West. We are thinking we will ride from West Yellowstone to Red Lodge sometime during the week, stay the night in Red Lodge, then come back the next day through Bear Tooth Highway. Is Red Lodge to West Yellowstone through Bear Tooth Highway doable in one day on a motorcycle? And do we need to have reservations in Red Lodge ahead of time, or can we wait to see which days during our week will be the best weather? If we don't have reservations will we be able to find a place to stay?
Skrevet 25. september 2019
Going from Red Lodge to Cooke City in one day by motorcycle is no problem, we saw many motorcycles doing exactly that. We went that same route both ways in our truck in the same day. As far as reservations in red Lodge, I'm not sure how vacancies at hotels look in August. We stayed at the KOA in our trailer.

Our trip is heading from west to east (Washington, Idaho, Yellowstone, The Badlands in South Dakota and then dropping down to Colorado. Most of the info I am finding is about going East to West. Is the Beartooth Highway that much better East to West that we should figure out how to include it in that direction?
Skrevet 19. september 2019
West to East takes you down Beartooth and in my opinion the best view, but either way would still be awesome.... The weather has turned and as of 9/20 19 the highway was closed at the Wyoming state line on west to Yellowstone. Please check you r road conditions .

Cynthia, where should I park my RV so I can go up or down Beartooth Hwy then come back to get it and bring it to Yellowstone. I'm going up 310 to Billings and would like to make a round trip so I can get my trailer. I'll need a place to sleep as well. Thanks for your time and advice in advance, Elizabeth

Red Lodge, MT would have the best parking on the north. Cody WY on the south, but it is quite a ways from Beartooth Pass. Otherwise, you will have to park in Yellowstone Park and I would recommend reservations before you start out. Heavy tourist season.
Skrevet 27. august 2019
When driving from Red Lodge to Cooke City on the Beartooth Highway are you required to pay the park fee for Yellowstone or do we not go through the park? Thanks
Skrevet 20. juni 2019
Agree with TacoBoy. The drive from Red Lodge to Cooke City is amazing! Pick your best driver, as he/she can’t watch...unless you stop. Which you will often. Truly one of the most scenic drives in America. Cooke City is a fun little town with shops and small restaurants. Going into the park will cost you the $35 fee, but isn’t necessary unless you want to say you’ve been there. I recommend heading back via Cody, WY. It’s a different view, but still amazing scenery. Enjoy!
