Some great paintings, really loved the Presidents pictures. The cafe was a great stop to get a drink, and recharge the batteries.

This is an beautiful museum for anyone who likes art or history. There are actually two different museums in this building, the National Portrait Gallery on one side and the American Art Museum on the other. The Portrait Gallery was very interesting. There are of course portraits of American presidents, but there is so much more! They currently have a handful of intriguing temporary exhibits about influential Americans. I ran out of time in the Art Museum side, so I suggest at least 2 hours here if you want to see everything. The only thing to note is parking can be tricky here. There is no on-site parking facility, so if you drive here you will have to park in one of the nearby garages, and they are not cheap. However, the museum is free so I definitely recommend it, as there is way more here than I thought.

Interesting gallery. Well spaced and organised. All the presidents portraits are on display. Easy access to all floors something of interest to most people. Not sure young children would enjoy it nothing interactive, but highly recommend for older children.
I’d avoid buying anything in the cafe very overpriced. Nice area to sit outside in the courtyard

Better than expected, and expected it to be good. Especially recommended taking one of the free tours to learn more details on a few portraits. As the guide said “one visit to the gallery is one visit”. Another visit would be different. We’ll definitely go back when the opportunity occurs

Fantastic portraits from many periods of history. So moving were the portraits of people who lost family members to the Irish “troubles”. And there was so much more—women who fought for women’s rights; those to fought against slavery; authors, poets, historical figures throughout history. This gallery is a must see.

The Smithsonian gallery complex of the National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum is the perfect place to visit if you've got a later event at Capitol One Arena or a nearby theater. It stays open until later (7 pm on my recent sojourn) and it tends to be quieter then.
On this visit, I also happened upon a syntho musician rehearsing in the atrium, for a function taking place later. The staff told me it's a popular venue for happenings of all types and that presidential appearances are not uncommon.
The hall of presidential portraits is always great. I also saw Oprah's new likeness as I came in. The variety and amount of artwork here is monumental, I try to see more on each trip to DC. And the setting of the old Patent Office is the perfect home for such an impressive collection.
As ever, not enough time, but I'll be back again!

Very nice way to spend a day, when the weather is not suitable for outdoor activities. Free admission. You learn a lot of history while viewing the portraits and reading about the persons depicted.

The National Portrait Gallery was amazing. It was a rainy afternoon in DC, and I had pretty much seen most of the things I had wanted to see for that day. I had the idea to go to the National Portrait Gallery which was nearby, and I will never regret it. This was one of my favorite museums. It had all the famous portraits of the presidents (every single president) that every knows from their childhood, as well as portraits of Hamilton, Franklin, Pocahontas, Francis Scott Key, etc. I highly recommend coming to this museum.

(Another) fantastic visit to this museum. Went on a June weekday afternoon; crowds were thin.
It's always fun to stroll the gallery of Presidents. This visit, I focused on the special exhibition of portraits of those involved in the justice movement, including an incredible painting of John Lewis. I also enjoyed an exhibit featuring portraits of those important to the environmental movement. And there's a new portrait of Oprah Winfrey that's fun to see and very vivid.
As always, I made some time to enjoy the sunny covered courtyard in the middle of the museum.
This museum's free entry makes it a wonderful place to stop-in and see just one or two exhibits before continuing with your day. I love it!

Visited this gallery in the late afternoon and found it virtually deserted. For those highly passionate in the study of art and/or American History, this gallery definitely deserves 1-2 hours of your time.
The gallery contains the famed Lansdowne and Athenaeum Portraits of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart, and displays the official presidential portraits of every subsequent President (including the famed ones of President Kennedy, Lincoln, Obama). The gallery also displays the best-known portraits of Michelle Obama, Admiral Nimitz, General MacArthur, and General Eisenhower.
Moreover, the gallery is connected to the Museum of American Art, which displays contemporary art from the past 50-80 years, including Nam June Paik's "Electric Superhighway," which I found stunning and marvelous!

Take a look at the website and determine what you absolutely don’t want to miss. If you arrive a little before the museum opens, yo should not have an isssue with crowds. The presidential portrait exhibit is excellent. Be sure to visit the room where Michelle Obama’s portrait is located!

Are there still long wait lines to enter?
Skrevet 22. juni 2018
No wait to enter. I’ve seen a 10-15 minute wait to stand in front of President Obama’s portrait (Weekend), Mrs Obama’s portrait was just crowded.

Hi there :
You should take a look at the National Portrait Gallery's own website.
You'll find quite a lot of helpful information under the VISIT - ACCESSIBILITY section, including the following : "For your comfort, wheelchairs can be borrowed by asking the security officer stationed at each museum entrance".
[It might also be a good idea to "double-check" wheelchair availability with the museum in advance of your intended visit, using the Phone and/or Email details on their website]
Enjoy your visit to this wonderful museum!

How far is the National Portrait Gallery from the Convention Center? Is it walkable from hotel/center to the gallery? (Coming to DC in a few weeks for a conference and would love to slip away to visit the Gallery.) Thank you!
Skrevet 4. april 2018
As mentioned above the fastest way to get there would be to take the Metro, otherwise it's a fairly short (10 minutes or so) walk.
Skrevet 6. april 2018
No, you can simply walk in. If you visit during the week it is fairly quiet and even on weekends, it doesn't feel that busy (it is so vast that you don't notice the crowds!). There is no charge, unless there is a specific exhibition. I recommend half a day at least to see it all or simply go back the following day for a couple of hours. Do not miss the presidential portrait gallery and the contemporary American artists on the top floor. Enjoy!

Is the famous George Washington portrait on display right now? The website claims it has been off display since February of last year and will be till fall this year
Skrevet 3. juni 2017
It’s available now but earlier the Gallery was under construction.
