I had a wonderful experience at the Carter G. Woodson home! Although there isn't much in the home, the tour guide was incredibly kind and informative. I learned so much and had a great conversation with the tour guide - we even stood around for awhile after the tour talking. I left feeling energized by the thought-provoking conversations and history lesson I had.

The home is in a nice, cute neighborhood. There is a small bookstore inside, as well as a waiting area with chairs and restrooms. You must be on a tour to view the home, so check the website before you go because they have limited hours.

We visited this newly opened historic site - the house of Carter Woodson. He was the first African American to document the history of African American - writing two publications - one more academic and one more for the regular reader. The house is open while they continue to work on building the auditorium but it’s a nice short visit. Probably good for kids and teens because the tour is short. I recommend seeing this with the African American Cicil War Museum a few blocks north.

It was interesting to learn about the life of Carter Woodson but virtually everything was gleaned from our tour leaders rather than his home (you have to visit on a free guided tour - leave on the hour). There were no exhibits, information panels and the home - all three floors - is completely bereft of furniture, wall and window coverings, pictures and anything else. The National Park Service did a fabulous job restoring the home but now needs to finish the project so visitors can learn much more about this very important African-American author and educator.

Visited on our first day visiting DC. The Cambria hotel is 4 minutes away walking, so we just had to go.

The tour was informative. We learned a lot about Dr. Woodson and his passion for preserving and telling the history of African Americans. The tour was about 30 minutes. It’s 3 floors, so if keep that in mind.

What would have made this tour 5 stars is more staging. Many of the rooms were empty, so you had to imagine what things would have looked like.

His Park is a 1 minute walk away and worth the visit. I just hate that Parks and Recreation have allowed it to be trashed.

If you visit D.C. and be in the area, come to visit the place to learn bout one of D.C. black leaders. Currently only partial homes were completed. The place is open for public only 3 days a week. Good place to learn about some of DC history and prominent resident. The place is manage by the National Park Serivice. Along the way, stroll along 9 street to see historic homes in Shaw.

I visited The Carter G. Woodson National Historic Site this past February, 2018. It is a work in progress, several of the rooms are completely bare and a few of the rooms are sparsely furnished. But what the site misses in decor the guides make up in knowledge. I knew who Woodson was but did not know what he was like. I left feeling as though I'd known him for quite sometime and could fully imagine what the rooms would have looked like had he been alive... a testament to the guide that took me through the house. I didn't have reservations and actually, I was the only one on the tour which for me was an added plus.

This site, as mentioned, is brand new (opened in May of 2017) and is still a work in progress. The NPS has completed phase one, of a three phase process, of opening the site. The home has been restored and now they are working on furnishing, interpretive signs and surrounding buildings on the block (including a visitor's center). The ranger, Ranger John, said they were hoping to be done by 2019. Definitely stop by this spot but call ahead to ensure that the site is open because the hours are very limited.

You must be on a ranger led tour in order to walk through the home. Tours are free and more information can be found on the NPS website, and again...call ahead. There is definitely a lot of rich history in this place and worth the time. I hope to see sites like this continue to be added to the National Park System.

The Carter G. Woodson home just recently opened. It is operated by the National Parks Service. The site is the home, office and venue were Dr. Woodson performed his work.

It is a must stop as it features the father or person who introduced the study of African-American history, which has morphed to Black History Month.

The venue is open, however finishing work is in progress.

You can make reservations on line and they are suggested so you are not disappointed if you show up and the tours are full.

One more critical feature is the home offers a rare glimpse of the tremendous work completed by Dr. Woodson and his colleagues. Approximately 50 yards away on 9th Street is the Carter G. Woodson statue. It is real life and is operated by the city and not associated with the National Parks but offers a great complement to your visit.
