Great spot for an after-lunch/afternoon experience. Very nice and pleasant staff greeted us. It is a showcase for a wide variety of arts. Glad to see a building restored and used for the arts instead of torn down. Nice gift shop.

The museum was small but the exhibits were great. We spent a great amount of time here. The security guards were very nice, friendly and helpful regarding where to visit and eat. We will return.

Beautiful museum right across the way from the White House. I do wish there were more exhibits but the ones there are lovely. and who doesn’t love a free museum?!

Not to miss. A jewel of a museum. And free.

Current exhibition focuses on women and fiber art throughout the first floor.

Nice gift shop, too.

This free gallery can be visited when leaving the White House. Dedicated to modern art, it contains some good surprises like this wave room lit in a way to highlight the room. Good store unfortunately expensive.

This is a really wonderful Gallery, always lots of fun, part of the Smithsonian Institution. It focuses on artwork and crafts in the Smithsonian's collections. But that doesn't begin to cover it. Incredible artwork and things created by some of the nation's most interesting and remarkable craftspeople. Truly spectacular stuff.

The building is also a real treasure. It was designed in the late 1850s in the Second Empire Style for William Corcoran, a great early collector of fine art. This architectural style had just caught the attention of American taste makers, and the idea of a public museum was new to Americans. There had been less than a handful up to that point. Corcoran selected American born James Renwick, Jr., then just 41, as the architect for his pioneering building, to be designed in a style new to the United States. Renwick was both inventive and very influential, and it has been renamed for him.

Nearly completed at the opening of the Civil War, it was requisitioned by Secretary of War General Stanton for war support, and General Montgomery C. Meigs converted the building into his headquarters office.

It was not finally returned to Corcoran until the late 1860s. It finally opened to the public in 1874 as one of the nation's first art museums. The Corcoran Museum quickly out grew this building, and moved to their great 1897 Gilded Age Gallery they still occupy just a few blocks over.

This building was put to a variety of uses, and in the late 1950's, it was scheduled for demolition for new government offices along with virtually all the other historic buildings facing Lafayette Square and the White House. Then President Kennedy was elected, and First Lady Jackie Kennedy led the nation in reevaluating the importance of our historic buildings, then being literally destroyed by the thousands. Mrs. Kennedy collaborated with the very inventive American architect John Carl Warnecke, born just 101 years after Renwick, to redesign the government buildings to preserve this architectural treasure along with the others facing the White House and the park. What a success.

The interiors are as Victorian as the outside! Visit this spectacular Victorian for great national treasures. The exhibits are always changing.

A wonderful small museum. I love the emphasis on empathetic connections between artists and materials. My family of 5 spent 90 minutes here and left feeling we learned a lot, had visceral experiences, and were calmer than when we entered (unlike other museums). Bravo.

This is always been one of my favorite museums, and after they renovated it about 12 to 15 years ago, they have really modernized the interior, and have created some amazing exhibits. I love the fact that it's very small and easy to see and probably an hour or less. The Renwick gallery actually started out either as the first Museum devoted to American art or the first art museum in Washington. Either way, the museum itself has a very strong Legacy. Because it's part of the Smithsonian it's free, and it's an excellent place for both kids and adults. Last time I was there I took my daughter who was two at the time and she loved it! They have an exceptional gift shop where you can find some specially crafted art and unique items which are also functional. So I would advise anybody who wants to see an amazing Museum and happens to be near the White House, this is right across the street and of little to no commitment.
