For this year's annual trip to DC I wanted to visit the Lucie Foundation hall to see "The Stand" exhibit by Glenn Kaino. It is exceptional.
I saw the documentary "With Drawn Arms, several years ago and have followed Tommie Smith's career as well as the iconic stance he took during the 1968 Olympics where we won Gold for the Men's 200 meter race.
The piece of art Kaino produced pays respect to Smith. It is a brilliant design and placed in a great spot of the Smithsonian.
Check the venue for hours of operation. The museum is located downtown in the Chinatown district. You can ask staff for directions to the 3rd floor where the Luce is located.

(Another) outstanding visit.
On this visit, I focused on two special exhibitions.
The gallery of Alma Thomas' paintings was so wonderful--riots of color and geometry, with interesting details about Thomas' life. She was from the DC area, which I didn't know before, and I enjoyed seeing how her work evolved over time.
The gallery of Amish quilts was wonderful; a beautiful set has been assembled for the exhibition. The details about Amish lifestyle and the designs was quite interesting and built on my enjoyment of the beautiful creations.
Per usual, I enjoyed some time in the beautifully, sunny courtyard at the center of the museum.
Can't really go wrong here--a wonderful collection in a gorgeous, easy-to-access setting.

Housed alongside national Portrait Gallery, it is free and open 11:30 to 7, that is later than most museums.
I went to see Amish Quilts. It was a stunning, large exhibit with wonderful wall labels.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) and the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) are both housed in the old Patent Office building. In SAAM, there were many interesting exhibits, both permanent and temporary. The exhibits give a broad picture of American art from the colonial period until the 21st century.

American art is as diverse as the huge and varied land and history it comes from, and this museum really helps give the visitor a taste of that breadth. Certainly not everything will be to everyone's taste, but there is something for everyone. Go in, dwell on what catches your eye, and skip the rest and you should have a fine visit.

My husband and I went to the combined American Art Museum/National Portrait Gallery while in Washington, DC on a Saturday afternoon. There was a lot of interesting artwork, though, also some that made us question why it's in an art museum. This combined museum is part of the Smithsonian and is free. It features a gift shop and a beautiful courtyard.

This museum was pretty average. Lots of artwork to see and some cool pieces. But I thought a lot of the art was poor.
It's free and you can just walk in. I'd skip unless there's nothing else you can do. It's open a bit later compared to other Smithsonian museums which is good.

Smithsonian American Art Museum is a good art lover destination in Washington D.C. It is just a few blocks away from the National Mall, and its content stands as a testament to the rich artistic heritage of America. As you step inside, you'll be captivated by the diverse collection of American art, showcasing historical and modern art pieces.
What makes this experience even more enticing is that the museum is conveniently connected to the National Portrait Gallery, offering a two-in-one artistic experience. Some of the portraits on display are both intriguing and abstract, providing a unique perspective on the subjects they depict.
Whether you're an art lover or simply looking to explore the cultural gems of D.C., the Smithsonian American Art Museum should be on your list. You can easily spend an entire day here, immersing yourself in the beauty and creativity that surrounds you. And if you need a moment of rest, the museum boasts a charming courtyard where you can unwind and recharge.
It was enchanting experience which I warmly recommend.

A large, very complete gallery with very interesting works, it is worth visiting, the best thing is that since it is a painting gallery, it is not crowded so the visit is pleasant

Vast museum twinned with the portrait gallery. We were more or less won over by the works (the 20th century is by far the most exciting)

How long would it take to visit here and the portrait gallery
Skrevet 21. juni 2017
One could spend hours there. My limit for any museum is about 90 minutes. This museum is centrally located downtown and it's free to enter. I would recommend one visit to the American Art side and second visit to the Portrait Gallery.

What is a good amount of time to budget for a family with mature children?
Skrevet 1. mars 2017
2 hours on one side (the Am Art Museum), break for lunch in the courtyard or at one of the places nearby, and then 2 hours on the other side (Nat'l. Portrait Gallery). Highly recommend going up to the top floor gallery of the side that used to the US Patent and Trademark Office. It's so quiet up there and the photographs and art are fantastic. You almost have the place to yourself, which is rare in a DC museum.

I am in Washington in late September and want to see historical quilts, is his the museum I see them? How many are on view, seems wen I look at websites they always say "not on view"
Skrevet 24. august 2016
If it is the National Quilt Collection you are interested in seeing, it is part of the division of Home and Community Life's Textile Collection, and it is on display at the National Museum of American History (Constitution Ave. bet. 12-14th streets). There are a lot of Smithsonians, so sometimes hard to figure out what's where! Have a good visit!
