On a rainy morning I headed to the the Anderson House, the home of the Cincinnati Society, the nation’s oldest patriotic organization founded in 1783 by a group of officers of the Continental Army who served together in the American Revolution. Its mission is to promote knowledge of the achievement of American independence and to foster fellowship among its members. I read about the Cincinnati Society in Tom Chaffin’s book “Revolutionary Brothers” and this is what sparked my desire to visit its home. Luckily I managed to be there on the last day before the holidays: starting today Anderson House is closed.
A nice surprise was waiting for me: there was a temporary exhibition “Fete Lafayette”, which presented very interesting historical documents about the involvement of the Marquis de Lafayette in the American Revolution war and his stride to include the French fighters for the American Independence in the Cincinnati society.
Larz and Isabel Anderson built their gorgeous mansion, “Florentine villa in the midst of American independence” in 1905, so it serves dual purpose: it educates visitors about the Cincinnati Society and its importance as well as allows access to its gorgeous interior. The decor is a pinnacle of taste. Stunning, just stunning! The ball room alone with its beautiful piano is a treasure, but what about the library, the second floor private rooms, the walled garden, the terrace? Everything is magnificent!

If you like stately homes, this tour is for you. Anderson House has been on my list of to did for many trips, so on my return visit (my first since The Before Times) I made sure to fit in a Saturday morning visit.
The house is the headquarters of the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization dating back to Revolutionary War times. There's a small exhibit that outlined the society, and the roles the house has set ex over the years, that visitors can peruse before a tour. The free guided tours are the only way to view the splendors of the house interior, and it's worth it.
The different styles of design combined together reminded me a bit of Hearst Castle, but on a more refined, smaller scale. The artwork, particularly the murals and the painting over the main staircase, are stunning.
There is a huge, airy ballroom (as was the case with most of the homes constructed at the time) which is a popular choice as an event venue. The tour also takes in the library and various reception rooms. Everything is carefully maintained and polished to perfection.
As a retired educator and a dedicated architecture geek, I found this excursion to be well worth my time and am glad I squeezed it in to a busy Saturday.
Tours are free, donations are welcome. The website details tour days and times.

A very interesting house.
A couple of notes. You must see it through a guided tour. The tours take an hour and seem to start at the 15 minute mark - 10:15, 11:15, etc.
If you don't have an hour, 'The Affairs of State' exhibition was very interesting. I recommend 30 minutes to see it and it is not necessary to be part of the guided tour to see it.
It appears that the house is sometimes closed for private events, so check the schedule. Also, the front door is kept locked. I had to ring the door bell three times and finally someone greeted me.
For a 7-10 minute walk from the DuPont Circle subway station, it is a nice venue to visit and it is free!

Neither my friend nor I had previously visited Anderson House and we had no idea of what to expect. It turns out to be the Headquarters of the elite Society of the Cincinnati (as in L.Quinctius Cincinnatus the early Roman patriot and patrician). The house was absolutely stunning in every respect. Its proportions and decoration were magnificent. Our guide on Anderson House's first day open after Covid was an exceptionally knowledgeable and interesting curator. My companion and I enjoyed the whole experience enormously. It was indeed a hidden gem, as a previous reviewer put it. Very highly recommended.

A wonderful museum to stop in and tour while exploring the Embassy Row area. There was an exhibition about medical care and practices treating military soldiers during the Revolutionary War-very interesting! The exhibitions change periodically. No dogs allowed and masks are required during the free tour. The space is available for weddings, too-what a fantastic venue!

The house itself is a work of art that you don’t want to miss! There is no entrance fee but to see the house you have to take the guided tour (start 15 minutes after each hour and last about one hour). The docents are volunteers but extremely knowledge, friendly and thorough. This home is a headquarters for the society of Cincinnati-fascinating history there as well! Don’t miss this!

Cincinnati natives in town for a quick meeting - had a morning to explore and walked over to the Larz Anderson House Musuem and were welcomed and invited in for a free tour (have to take tour to visit entire house). The fabulous Gilded Age "Winter Home" mansion is amazing in itself and the tour guide conveys lots of fun and interesting information along the tour.
The building is also the home of the Society of Cincinnati and right now there is a really interesting exhibit on America's First Veterans (from the American Revolution) which helps set the stage for the tour.
I understand there is also an Anderson's car museum in Boston - which I look forward to checking out! Great way to spend an hour or two in DC!

This wonderful old city mansion is the home of the Society of Cincinnati. This is the HQ of the Society of a Cincinnati and heritage organization of the first sons of Officers from the Revolutionary War. They have tours of this magnificent building, it’s furniture, architecture and artwork. I lived in DC for years and never knew this was here. The true treat is the Library downstairs with original military books, including an original Blue Book Field Manual for Drill created by Von Stuben. The Librarian is terrific as well. We went with a group of West Point Classmates, well worth the stop. Parking can be iffy, however. It is free but you can leave a donation at the front desk.

With a city full of free museums, you don’t think of visiting the headquarters of the Society of the Cincinnati as a must do in DC. However if you are looking for something different than the Smithsonians, then this is an interesting jewel. It is free and located on Mass. Ave near DuPont Circle so it’s easy to find. The house was built in 1904 by the wealthy Larz Anderson’s as a winter residence and it shows how the elite lived around that time. In addition, Larz’s ancestor was a founding member of Society of the Cincinnati, named after the Roman general, and is the first American veterans group formed after the American revolution. Anderson, in honor of his ancestor allowed the home to be used as a meeting place for the society and after his widow died the house was bequeathed to the society. So the beauty is that you get two history lessons in one.
