This historic spot is tucked away in the district's northern region, near the National Catholic Basilica. It's located on the grounds of a military retirement home and tours must be reserved in advance (they often sell out, too).

Lincoln and his family spent time here following the death of their young son William. He also worked on some of the most important projects of his presidency at the site.

The rooms are empty of furnishings though the architecture is intact. The guides bring the imagery to life with stories of the presidential residence over a hundred years ago. I could picture a lawn full of encamped Union soldiers while the President visited with them on a regular basis.

There is also an informative exhibit in the visitors center, which includes a piece on grieving and letting go, as the Lincoln family must have done during their time here.

Nearby are an historic cemetery which I didn't have time to see, and The Hitching Post restaurant, a DC standby for great Southern fare.

I didn't even know this place existed, and I'm so glad I found it. It dates back to the civil war - it's a walk back in time. The tour is excellent, very informative; our tour guide was Wesley. I had no idea Lincoln spent so much time there, and the emotions that were involved as to WHY he spent time there. There's also historical significance. Don't miss this gem!

I had heard about this home a few years ago and was determined to visit it while we were in D.C. In fact, because of a special event being held at the cottage, we changed our plans around, so we could go on a different day.

We were not disappointed.

Yes, the house only has limited furnishings. But, the guides are what make the visit special and unique. Can you imagine Lincoln and Sec. of War Stanton chasing after and carrying Tad's peacocks in their arms because the birds got tangled up in a series of bushes and trees?

I always enjoy a good story that makes great historical figures into understandable neighbors. Going to the Lincoln Summer Cottage is a perfect vehicle for this!

This was a wonderful surprise. It was part of the Soldier’s Home and very well restored. The cottage was much bigger than expected. Our tour included many rooms including Lincoln’s bedroom. Our guide, Paul, told us many stories of Lincoln’s time in the cottage. He was well versed in Civil War history which enhanced the visit. There was a very nice visitors center as well. I would definitely recommend this hidden gem.

Our Uber driver had some trouble finding this place on his GPS, and they have a security check before you enter, so you may have to have your ID ready to show. The tour last a little over an hour, and it was interesting to learn more about Lincoln's summer residence while he was President, and the things that happened in this cottage. Our guide Paul was very informative, and he actually did encourage us to participate by asking us questions about how we felt about some of the things that happened during that time, or what we would have done if we were in Lincoln's shoes. Photos aren't allowed in the house, but the rooms themselves are empty, so there actually isn't much to see physically inside. But the tour held my attention throughout. There are some exhibits in the visitor's center you can read through after the tour as well.

The traffic is bad but just go to the cottage and take the tour! We had Josie and she was wonderful. Learned a lot about the family and history surrounding it. I have seen some negative “Nancy” comments about how empty the cottage was and your not there for the furniture you are there for the history the family had at the home. It’s beautiful and the guest area and gift shop has wonder information about everything. The loss and grief exhibit for those who have lost children or loved ones is absolutely breath taking. The emotions felt in that room I can’t explain it. Just go visit and see for yourself
It’s not a waste of time like some reviews are saying

This history buff was looking forward to visiting President Lincoln's Cottage. However, visitors should be aware that it's essentially an empty building -- no furniture or home decor. I think it would have helped the Lincoln family "come alive" for visitors if they had period-appropriate furniture in place to help visitors visualize how the Lincolns lived in their leisure time, where President Lincoln received guests, and where he penned the Emancipation Proclamation. That's hard to do with bare walls and floors. Our guide was fairly lackluster, too, unfortunately. I'm still glad that I visited, but this experience could be so much more.

This cottage is where President Lincoln came during the summer months of 1862, 1863 and 1864. The cottage is located on the grounds of a veteran’s retirement home. There is a parking lot (which I could never verify from the website) and a very nice visitor center/gift shop. The staff was friendly and helpful. The reason for the four-star rating is our docent wasn’t that great. The house itself is steeped in history and despite having no furniture, it has a lot of stories to tell. I just wish they would have been told a little better with a little more enthusiasm and detail.
