I've not been inside the building, but it looks cool from the outside. What I really like though is the fabulous statue of Einstein seated in front of the building!

Very near the State Department, this stately building has little tourist pressure and offers science-themed galleries and a shady restful garden. The architecture alone is worth a visit. It reminds me of the Nobel museum in Stockholm.

I have been at the National Academies for many meetings and convocations, usually in the Fred Kavli Auditorium. It is a beautiful building. The Great Hall is the center of the building. Its gorgeous dome and side elements are decorated with images from the history of science. They are beautiful. The building contains a members' room intended as a reading room for members of the Academy, a board room, conference rooms and galleries. One of the galleries is for exhibits on the work of the Academy and another for showings of the relationship between science and art. Other pieces from the Academies' art collection are on display through the building The building also is the location for the Cultural Programs of the National Academies, which are rich events at the intersections of art, music and science. Outside the building are gardens and the remarkable and wonderful statue of Einstein. The statue alone is worth a visit.
The Academies have a long and rich history of serving the country since the time of its founder, Abraham Lincoln. The esteemed members of the Academies are recognized for their work seeking truths about our natural world and the human condition.

This is a very impressive academy, I learned that it was founded by President Lincoln when the US started building the ironclad ships. He wanted an objective panel of professionals to work with in building these ships. They have a nice little gift shop as well.

While the building is impressive, I wonder just how much it is actually used. I must comment that the cafe/deli in the building serves very good food at a reasonable price, and it opens early enough to be able to eat breakfast there prior to any meetings you might be attending.

We saw the National Academy of Sciences building when we came to see the Albert Einstein Memorial. The building is not the most impressive structure in Washington, D.C., but as an engineer I can appreciate more utilitarian buildings. The disappointing part was the amount of litter and overflowing garbage cans around the building particularly near the Einstein Memorial. It really detracts from the premises.

Free, with limited things to see. Worth checking out Albert, the beautiful old buildng and the art displays. A twenty minute stop, 30 tops. Cafeteria in basement with limited hours is a place to catch you breath and get a drink. Few visitors. It holds meetings of the National Academy.

My wife was a Physics teacher and I am a retired engineer so it is quite natural for us to be interested in Sciences . When we tried to visit the Academy , we were told that the building was not open to the public on that day ; we were disappointed but at least we were able to see Einstein's Memorial in the front !

The inside exhibits are only able to be seen during business hours M-F. They are also not to terribly thrilled with visitors but will let you in.

Having said the inside as an architectural curiosity is pretty cool.

However, don't do what we did and dedicate a trip there. If you happen to be at the Vietnam Memorial and go over to see the Albert Einstein Memorial (on the grounds of the NAS) during the week then stop in. It is worth a peak but not worth a whole separate trip.

The also have a nice cafe in the basement, which makes it one of the few places near that end of the mall with food and bathrooms. Ideal for a stop on hot summer day during lunch M-F.

That would be a small hack for that end of the mall, which has very little in way of restaurants nearby.

Visited on 7/10/2017 (Monday): Upon entering the building we were greeted with someone asking how they can help us which made it seem like the building is not open to the public. You have to show your ID (everyone in the party has to) to the front desk before you can walk around and look at the exhibits. There are a couple of interesting things to see including a large mosaic ceiling, but otherwise most of the things can be found or read online - talking about the history of the Academy or other Science related things. I would not recommend visiting unless you have run out of things to do.
