This area is mainly locals out for daily walk. Through natural landscape of Alpine. Lots of paths to walk or jog. See natural habitat of many species of birds.
There is not a much shade, so early mornings in the summer months is best. Very hot and dry,

We went to Wright's Field to take family pictures with a professional photographer. The terrain was great and there are all kinds of different backdrops for great photo opportunities. The photos turned out great and we have received a lot of wonderful comments on them and several people wanting to know the location of the photo shoot. Wright's Field is also well known by the locals for walking, hiking, biking and various other activities. I really like the versatility of the area and would recommend it for anyone looking for a place to do family photos.

Close to town. Great for walking a dog or a nice stroll. Can get warm in the summer and worth watching for snakes, but that's true of all of San Diego County. Nice way to spend a leisurely hour or so.

This place is bigger than you think. The flat area visible from South Grade Road is just a part of this varied ecosystem. You will see different plants in bloom each time you visit, and may see a small falcon hovering over the flat area, looking for a meal. The lower section has seasonally wet stream beds and amazing views are around each corner. Great place for dogs too. Watch for both rattlesnakes and poison oak.

This is a pleasant to visit nature reserve near Alpine. You can observe here many species of birds and plants. Native grasses dominate. We were lucky to come here after some serious rainy weather and after the resolution of drought so everything was in bloom. Get the map of trails on line or see on google earth before you go to make the best of your trip.

Nature walks. Different types of plant life and vegetation. Great place to enjoy the back area of Alpine. Always something different to see, courtesy of mother nature.

This is one of the few natural grasslands in San Diego region. I absolutely love the fact that I got lost in Alpine, cute little town and this was a joy to walk around in! Will certainly stop by for a short hike again :)

This was very hard to find and it took me two attempts. Not sure why a trail must be kept as such a secret? Not sure it was worth the pain and effort?
This is flat, easy and a good way to get started with hiking. You may want to take your friends or kids if they never did hiking.
I have added some pictures with more info hoping to make it easy for others!
Park at the Joan MacQueen Middle School parking lot, walk North and make a right (east) turn on to Tavern Road (yes, this is not the same as the main Tavern road running North/South)
Don't get intimidated by the signs or barking dogs which are from the frustrated residents trying to scare hikers! Understand their frustration and be considerate.
Get a trail map at the entrance - see the pictures. Pick the trail you like. Stay on the trail as much as you can and be prepared to get bit lost and return before it gets dark.
May be a good idea to print this Alpine Trail brochure and use with care! You can also pick one from the CA visitor center at the Viejas Outlet. This may be outdated and only half of the full version I got from the trail head. In fact this list has lot more interesting trails you may want to explore!

For 14 years I have walked in Wright's field. It is one of the last grassland areas in California and it is beautiful. The backcountry land trust in Alpine owns much of the land and does a great job presenting eduction like activities during the summer. I go out to the field almost every day with my dogs and enjoy every moment of the peaceful beauty of the nature that surrounds me.

Due to the recent heat I hadn't been out hiking very much but today near sunset I headed to wright's field for a short walk.
Over the years we have walked, ran, and biked numerous miles in this great field. There is usually a breeze blowing that makes the walk comfortable. We have seen everything from coyotes on the ground to hawks in the trees.
The trails run throughout this field. You can do a hike of 3 miles plus if you follow the trails near the perimeter or cut it shorter by taking the connecting trails that cut across the interior.
If your in the area and are looking for a nice afternoon or morning walk this is highly recommended
