My friend & I were on a cruise excursion & thought the Crystal cave with tubes & lunch would be fun !! It was over an hour bus ride but our guide Peter made it so fun & interesting !! He told us about Belize, sang a song, made us laugh, it was a great trip !! The caves were huge inside some parts & Peter was very knowledgeable about the cave which made it interesting. We’re (senior citizens) & he made sure we were safe & helped us when needed, which wasn’t very much Lol. The food was good but the drink I ordered was even better !! Overall a great experience !!

Although the tubing was relaxing, the water was so low that it wasn’t really tubing. The guide was great, but she had to pull us the whole way. It was so low that your bottom would drag on rocks. If you go make sure the water is higher. Then, maybe it will be actual tubing.

We opted for the self-drive option (6 people) in March 2024. We paid $5 USD/$10 BZD per person to enter the Nohoch Che'en Caves reserve and hired an on-site guide for $65 USD / $130 BZD (so $70 USD / $140 BZD total per person with entry fee), which did NOT include lunch or the Crystal Cave option. Despite repeatedly pointing out that tours from Belize City go for the same price and include transportation, park entry fees, and lunch, the guide was unwilling to lower the price.
In retrospect, we would have booked a tour, as the guided experience would not have been any different but would have had the added convenience of everything taken care of and lunch, for a better price (especially when factoring in the cost of car rental + gas). If, for whatever reason, you decide to self-drive, there are two options for hiring guides. One is the 'collective' - guides hanging out by the parking lot. A hundred yards down the road from the parking lot is a small building of a tour company. The collective guides do not have published prices, so I'm guessing the price depends on the weather, season, day, time - in general, how busy the place is when you show up (unfortunately, we arrived at 10 am with at least one cruise ship in the port that day - so it was busy). The tour company goes by a set price, but I only noticed this after hiring the guide.
As for the experience - well, besides being busy and the river packed with other groups bumping into each other, it was at the peak of the dry season and the river level was low. So the guides were pushing or pulling their groups of tubers most of the time (versus just floating down the river on their own). We also did the ATM cave spelunking and Barton Creek canoeing tours, which we liked significantly better. ATM cost us $125 USD with lunch, transportation, and park fees per person, and Barton Creek canoeing $75 USD self-drive per person without lunch. Despite the slightly higher prices than Nohoch Che'en Caves reserve tubing, we felt the others were significantly more fun/memorable experiences and by an order of magnitude better value for our money.

We went cave tubing and ziplining here. Wonderful experience.
Inside the cave there is a small waterfall water slide area and some small rocks for cliff jumping.
This is a popular destination and had more people that we thought would be there.
Nevertheless, totally fun and worth doing.

This was my favorite part of Belize! We did it all- ruins, nature walks, ATM cave, beaches, and snorkelling...nothing matched the experience of the gentle tubing through the caves and jungle. So relaxing and adventurous at the same time!
We drove to the park and signed up with our guide, Reggie, right there. He had the best vibe - extremely chill and super knowledgeable. This is the guy you want if you want to relax but also have a lot of questions! He customizes the experience to you.
We heard that the Crystal Cave was also worth seeing but weren't sure if we would feel like getting off of our tubes and hiking deeper into the cave system to that spot. Reggie told us we could decide later and pay at the end so we would know what we were getting before paying. He made things very easy for us and even carried our tubes. It was obvious that he loves his job and truly appreciates the wonder and awe of the surroundings. I would've done this exact same tour with him every day if we had more time.
At the end of the trip, Reggie connected us with the local artists in the market area. His wife creates beautiful butterfly art, so he showed us her shop which is right next to Amir, the coconut and pineapple guy! Amir will hook you up with a hollow pineapple that you can fill with rum and pineapple juice - he lets YOU pour the rum and the pineapples have free refills. Worth it!
If you do one thing in Belize, this is it. Connect with Reggie by finding his shop in the market - Shanz Cave Tubing Gift Shop or looking up the shop on FB and sending him a message.
P.S. The Crystal Cave IS worth it so definitely add that to your adventure...you can just do the quick tour not the 7 mile hike ;-)

This was something I never thought I would do but am glad I did it. The tour guide was absolutely amazing - calm, patient, and considerate. He was a good speaker and we all had an excellent time.

A relaxing way to spend part of a day. If you have your own transportation, don’t book a tour or hire a guide at the start of the road (often around $180 Belize per person). If you go all the way to the site, you can park for $5 Belize per person, then get a guide, tubes, hard hats, lights, and life vests for about $50 Belize per person. If you are able, best to call ahead so you know there is a guide available and see if you can have your own group rather than being linked to someone else’s. There are both toilets and separate shower/changing rooms to each side of the building with toilets. About half of the float is in the cave and half just floating down the river in the jungle. You will need footwear/shoes of some kind that can get wet for the path to the start, but these can be nearly anything - water shoes, flip flops, sandals, etc.

This was a fantastic experience. For those who have their own transportation you can drive to the spot and find a guide when you arrive- super easy and gives you a private tour!

We had a fantastic time and were very relaxed. Our guide Avery was entertaining and informative. We broke the tour through our hotel. We were driven there and met our guide. Wear swim clothes and they have changing rooms and restrooms at the parking lot. We walked about 20 min to the cave wearing a lifevest and carrying a huge tube along with headlamp. We crossed multiple times across the same river which was very shallow. We sat on our tube and Avery guided us through the river and pointed out all the formations. He is definitely someone I would recommend as he was very friendly and put alot of effort in the tour. We were only 3 of us other tours had 8-10 people in the tube. After we went through the cave we continued our tubing expedition down river and that was a blissful experience. Definitely ask for that ride down river plus tube in the cave. My son swam the whole way and loved it. This is completely different and less strenuous from ATM tour. Its a must do.

Ziplining with Elmer and Osman was so much fun! They made sure safety was the top priority but also had lots of fun! Beautiful site to see on the 7 lines!
Victor did an amazing job guiding the cave tubing. He took the time to point out lots of information about the plants especially the cashew trees, pineapples, and leaf cutter ants. Very fun and informative!

We will have a rental car and were considering stopping on the way from San Ignacio to Placencia, but I'm afraid of leaving all of our dive gear (including cameras) and luggage in the rental car. Any thought on this?

Has anyone tried public transport here from water terminal in Belize? Hoping to show up and pay a lot less for guide.

Hi! I saw your post about Nohoch Che'en Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve and it touches on exactly what I've been trying to research... we have a rental car, and we'd like to drive right up to Nohoch and get a guide to do the cave walks AND the cave tubing. Is it possible to get there and then hire on a guide? We don't need a shuttle from a hotel and all tours I have found begin that way.
Appreciate the advice!

I think you can drive there and get a guide from there but I'm not quite sure as we had a guide take us from the airport. I would call them first. They seemed super helpful when we were there. Enjoy!
