This was a great trip for a family - our family of four includes two older teens who were impressed by the experience of canoeing into the cave (the younger one says “it was SWAG”). We took at tour arranged by our resort in San Ignacio, Cahal Pech, but we didn’t catch which company we went with. We enjoyed seeing the stalactites/stalagmites and the bats, but were amazed by the archeology. The stories and history told by our guide, Alex, were a high point! We swam in the pool outside the cave afterwards, and that was pleasant. There are restrooms on site where you can change out of wet clothes. If you don’t intend to swim, you don’t really need a swimsuit, but water sandals are a good idea. Plan on a half day for this trip.

Mind blowing. Go! Easy tour in an amazing cave. Easy to navigate. Drove to cave. The drive was probably more challenging than the cave. About 2 miles from howay on a rustic road that has you driving across river bed 2x. Had a 2 wheel Jeep. We were fine. The cave is hige. Stalactites and Stalagmites that are enormous. Remnants of Mayan sacrificial ceremonies. Great guide at mine entrance. Meet a guy named Mike if you get the chance. Built much of the access roads. If ATM is too much, this place is quite easily traveled. Recommend both if you can. Stunning.

We were supposed to go cave tubing with Maya Walk Adventures but due to rain, that cave was closed. They quickly rerouted us to be able to canoe Barton Creek cave. It was very peaceful and relaxing. We did not get wet and there was no hiking required. The time in the cave was a little less than an hour. It’s located fairly close to San Ignacio so doesn’t take long to drive to. The entire excursion lasted about 3 hours. Our guide, Eddie, was very knowledgeable and entertaining. It is an excellent rainy day activity.

A perhaps under rated tour, but one we found to be amazing. We booked through Get Your Guide and were paired with Belize Caving Expeditions. Leo, our guide, picked us up from our hotel and drove us to the cave. With just the 3 of us in a canoe, he paddled through the cave system, pointing out Mayan artefacts and even human remains. The scenery was spectacular, and seeing the bats in their natural environment was wonderful. We worried this trip may be too similar to the ATM cave tour, but it was a totally different experience.

DO NOT TAKE UPPER BARTON CREEK ROAD TO GET THERE!!!! Other than the road there, this was a must do for us. The We made the mistake of taking the back way in since it was quickest from our lodge. The last 1/2 mile is down a zigzag, steep, lose gravel, large rock, road from hell.
Enough about the road. The guide we had was great. He was very informative. We enjoyed the slow paddle into the cave and was able to see a lot and learned a lot. The price was a bit high but was worth it to see this cave.

We stayed at San Ignacio Hotel they arranged the tour. Cruz was our tour guide. It ended up being just my husband and myself. Which was really nice. Cruz was extremely knowledgeable about the Mayan culture, the site, and had great advice about the surrounding area. We were considering the ATM tour. But we are in our 50’s and were a little scared off by some of the reviews. Based on what we heard. I think we could have done the ATM tour but I am so glad we did this one instead. It was quiet. We got there At 8 and only saw two other canoes. You put on lighted helmet, life jacket and walk right to the canoe and go into the cave. We went back about a quarter of a mile. Cave formations are beautiful. Bats fly around. And the cave is incredibly peaceful. You see a few chards of pottery. And only one skull. But we weren’t there for the artifacts. The cave opens up wide then gets progressively lower. I thought we were done a couple of times. But Cruz got us around the formations. Highly recommend this tour.

Drove up with no reservation, but they were very accommodating and we had a great canoeing and caving experience. Easy to do with kids, nice amount of time, cooler temps inside the cave, not to overwhelming or claustrophobic at all. Was glad we weren’t in the water and just got to canoe! Also had a really yummy lunch at the cabana type restaurant before heading out on some afternoon adventures (we saw the butterfly preserve and then went swimming at Big Rock) and the delicious homemade food sustained us!

You travel by canoe into a cave deep underground to see the various stalactites, stalagmites and pillars that have been created by water dripping through the limestone for millennia. It's a great way to stay out of the hot Belizean sun as it's very cool inside the cave. The Maya are said to have visited there.

We enjoyed our guided tour of the Barton Creek cave by canoe. Our guide, Jose, had grown up in the nearby community of El Progresso, and was very well informed on all aspects of Barton Creek Cave. This is much more easily accessible than the "ATM " cave near Teakettle.

Considering doing the extended tour here in place of ATM. Anyone done both an have opinions?
My husband and I have done ATM, but our children are coming who have not experienced it. I know they could handle ATM, but is this more strenuous?

The canoe ride is short, maybe 20 or 30 minutes
Our 3 year old could not do it (we think because it was so dark so we had to leave

I seam to get car sick easily when on tour van / buses, so we would be driving to the location. Is there parking available? You say we cross a river, I hope it isn’t the one pic the red truck is in. We are looking at this adventure for January 17th. What time do we have to be to your location? I saw some pricing in other posts, please confirm what options are available for tours as well as pricing? I saw mention of canoe, lunch, zip line, waterfall, is there atv, etc.?

You can easily drive here, There are two ways one is completely dry and the other is a river crossing , Currently the river is about 6 inch deep , this varies on and in rainy season . Coming from Georgeville the first entrance is river crossing and the second which is 2 miles further is a dry crossing , follow the signs . There is restaurant and Zip line a few hundred feet from cave entrance and a great fresh water swimming area in-front of the cave , climb the vines and dive in off rock cliffs ( ladder for non Tarzan and Jane's ) . Look to forward to seeing you here .Go to web site Bartoncreekcave for pricing and maps . Depending on activates you want you can come any time between 7 am and 4 pm.

If we drive to the cave site ourselves how much do you pay for the entrance, equipment and the guide that will take you into the cave? Just considering if it's worth driving there rather than joining a tour.

If you drive to the cave you will get a local guide who grew up here on site and will do a very special and different tour then the organized tours from town ... The price is 50 US each , the drive is good and a lot of fun ,, The roads are in better shape then they have been in years ,, If you would like a pickup we can do that for 65 US each from San Ignacio town and area , and you would still get local guide

Can we drive to this cave on our own and rent canoes there instead of taking an expensive tour for the whole experience? Here will be 8 of us and we already rented a large van to tour around Belize on our own

I was told at the cave that you are not allowed to enter the cave on your own. It’s really not worth going anyway. It’s boring.
