My husband and I did the self-guided tour of St. Herman's Cave. For a minimal fee, you gain entrance to the cave as well as the blue hole cenote a mile down the road. If you want to go further into the cave, you must hire a guide (which you can arrange at the ticket booth). it's a 15 minute walk down the easy, well groomed "lowland" trail to the cave entrance. There's also a highland trail, which is a more strenuous hike through the jungle. The mosquitos are brutal, so wear plenty of bug repellant. The self-guided part of the cave is fairly short, but pretty, and the play of light on the river inside the cave is pretty neat. You can also hike to blue hole, but since it was getting hot and steamy, we opted to drive.

Our guide led us on a short hike to the cave, and explained to us about Belize, the people, and the environment. She even made it a point to stop and show us small, Black Orchid, which is Belize's national flower. While going into the cave, she told us about what the Mayan's believed about the underworld and what kind of rituals they would do in the caves. She even found a scorpion spider, or whip spider, to show us and why they hang out in caves.

Once in the water, she pulled us on our tubes to the back of the cave and then we began to float back down the river. At one point, she told us to turn off our lights and to just be quite. We sat there in the pitch black, listening to the sounds of the water and the cave, A very surreal experience. At the end of the tour, we were able to observe some bats and how they fly about the cave. I highly recommend this experience.

I was not sure what to expect from a cave tour aside from getting muddy. But wow! I was so surprise to see how pristine the cave river water was as it flowed over river rocks and around the underground rock formations. Once in the cave, there were ZERO bugs, zero trash, zero noise (aside from the sound of rushing water), and zero light (if you turn off your headlamp). It was such a neat experience! For those who are not up to substantial physical activity, this leisurely walk to the cave and float on the river might work well for you.

We stopped on our way through one day while traveling to Belmopan. We just did the self guided tour since we were a little pressed for time. But I'm glad we stopped, it was very cheap to enter the park and we were there about 2 hours. It's an easy hike to the cave and the cave is also an easy hike once inside. Turn your headlamp off and just enjoy!

We visited Herman's Cave with our guide, Pedro Garcia from Upside Down Tours. Pedro was extremely knowledgable about Mayan history and especially their perceptions of and usage of caves... He told us about how the ancient Maya used the cave as their desperation increased along with the drought, how they believed the cave was part of the underworld, and further along on our trip, he pointed out a room above where human remains have been found and thus sacrifices were likely performed there. He also knew a lot about the geological parts of the tour- explaining how stalagmites & stalactites form, how long they take to form, why some look different than others, etc. I didn't think I would be terribly interested in that part of the tour but he made it interesting! He was very friendly and had a good sense of humor as we tubed in the cave- sometimes in the total darkness, which was a bit eerie in the best way! I really recommend this tour, it was definitely a highlight of our trip!

Our family is what I’d call cave connoisseurs! We have visited many caves across the US so this was a treat to see a cave outside the US. It was nice and we were glad to make the stop. We just did the self guided tour because of time constraints. It was good for 18-66 years old. The price includes a trip to the blue hole. $4 US. Go ahead and get the head lamps for a few extra bucks that will go toward the national park funds.

Had a great time visiting Herman's Cave and doing some cave tubing. Able at Upside Down Tours was great to reply to my emails and met us at the park just like he said he would. Our tour guides were great young ladies who were very knowledgeable about the cave and the history of the Mayans. Will certainly use them again in the future.

My first experience cave tubing was so much fun. Our guide was great and very informative about everything...the cave, the country, the wildlife. Even when one of us had a "flat tire" (tube hit a sharp spot on the cave wall) it made the tour even funnier and more memorable. Billie showed us a really good time and I would do it again for sure. Pretty cave, cool water, fun day!

What fun!! This was one of several amazing experiences during our time in Belize. We had a wonderful tour guide, Pedro with Upside Down Tours. He was a great guide and a lot of fun too.

There is a very short and very easy "hike" (walk) to the cave and then a short walk in the cave to the spot where you get in the river with the tubes. The tubing is basically a lazy river tube down the river inside the cave. It is fun and absolutely beautiful. I loved it when our small group all turned off our headlamps and enjoyed some time riding in the dark!

I highly recommend the cave tubing. To tube you must be with a guide, or at least that is my understanding.

Enjoy this quick hike into the jungle with a unique destination. Once you get into this cool cave there is a short walk to the end. An easy exploration that we added to a trip to the Blue Hole
