This was my wife's and my 10th charter in 22 years of marriage, and 3rd in Belize. Previously we used TMM, before DYC and Moorings arrived and TMM closed shop here. As we flew into Belize City and Placencia we saw extreme smoke and soon realized that Central America is having a record heat and dry period. Apparently some of the seasonal agricultural burns have become wildfires. It was extremely hot and smoky. Thankfully the Air b&b we spent 3 nights in prior to boarding Kirona 2 had air conditioning and a nice clean pool. We wondered if we should pursue delaying the trip for another date due to the unhealthy smoke in the air. Thankfully my wind apps indicated a shift in the wind forecast, which proved to be true.
Johann and Georges at Dream Yacht were awesome. We appreciated George's technical tour of the new boat (I learned a lot from him) and Johann's chart brief. The check out was easy. Wish we had more time with Johann on the charts as it felt a bit rushed as he was trying to get us on the water and away from the heat (which we very much appreciated!) I find in general that chart briefings tend to be on the rushed side of things...however, it adds to the exploration and "find your own way" piece to this kind of trip. I always want more time to learn and understand better - the options available in cruising grounds. These guys were very attentive and helpful, courteous and polite. There is a decent restaurant next door to this small simple base.
The Excess 11 was super clean and well prepared. Everything worked very well all week. We self provisioned from the Publix in Stamm which worked well for us.
Cockpit was very comfortable with the table and long seating, enough to lie down on. There were also wide 2 person chairs behind the wheels on each side. The lines and jams were perfectly located at the starboard helm and awesome once we got a handle of managing them with the space. Incredible sight lines to each quadrant of the catamaran, best ever. Really enjoyed the single electric winch for the main halyard and sheets. Oh, in addition to the hard bimini, there are smaller soft biminis over each outboard helms. These actually worked quite well to provide shade. Very comfortable helms, best ever.
This was our second time chartering with an auto pilot, and the first with a newer tech touch screen (Garmin). I found myself looking at the screen a lot, touching it to bounce from one data set to another. The screen was on the smaller size for my older eyes. Something I'd have to get used to I suppose, liking the old school way of doing things. As another reviewer noted - it was helpful seeing the tracks others have sailed.
Electric toilets were a treat, a first for us. Showers and sinks areas worked the best ever for us. And the water maker was new for us too...a nice luxury for sure. Another thing to fiddle with to keep the water topped off, which I actually enjoyed. We only used about 20% of fresh H2O tank for the 2 of us each day, showers included.
Georges said the solar system was highly efficient - and he was right! We only had to use the engines for anchoring and using the water maker...and a bit of motoring to assist getting to where we wanted to go. We never had to start the motors in order to charge the batteries to be above the minimum recommendation, as we have had to on other boats.
There was a larger mini refrigerator and a separate freezer, both front opening. They worked quite well - even to make cube ice and to hold a bag frozen as we consumed it all week. Nothing froze in the fridge. Great refrigerant set up. Amazing luxury for us...best ever.
The bridle attachment to the all chain rode used a well fitting shackle. Easiest and simplest that we've used. It was a positive attachment (no chance of it coming off) unlike some others that we have used in the past. At first use - I noticed to not drop the shackle as it's not attached to anything when you are transferring onto the chain. Not sure if there was a spare onboard? Thankfully, I didn't have to look. Loved the all chain rode, again - first ever for us. Totally bomber as we took George's advice to "just lay most of it out and sleep well."
The two 28 HP Yanmars sipped fuel - which we liked. Plenty of power when needed. Dingy was also new, Mercury motor started on the first or second pull. Sipped fuel with the minimal use we had. Sails of course being new, were amazing. Looked to be stiff Dacron but what do I know. Wish there were some outboard options to the self tacking Jib for when broad reach and running...yes, a minor wish for a week long charter.
To my surprise, this Excess 11 had a keel on each pontoon. This brought us to 5 knots at 30 - 60 degrees in 12-15 Kt winds! Quite good in my opinion. We sped up to 8 kts with 20 kts wind at 90-120 degrees. Not sure what the hull speed is...didn't feel like a lot for this boat when I tried to push it, as compared to a Fountaine Pajot Tobago and of course a Catana 42 that we've chartered in the past.
Births - best ever. You can sit up throughout the whole area of each of them without your head hitting anything. No shelves in this model - plenty of room for them, and not important for us on a week charter. Mattress was very comfy. Ventilation could be improved with hatch location, increasing the port size and adding a second fan in the large birth space - but keep in mind that we were in record heat for the week.
Salon was well laid out, and wished the operable windows were larger however, and some operable on the sides and a hatch or two on the roof to increase ventilation. The two fans didn't cut it. Full views in each direction was appreciated, best ever for us.
This was an excellent trip with the combination of Georges, Yohann, the new Excess 11 and the high quality snorkeling available out of Placencia. We would happily charter from them here again.

Previous reviews ( some) of the Belize base of Dream Yacht Charter were quite frankly very scary. So we made enquires with our agent, the company at the base and higher up levels to obtain re-assurances that our long planned and expensive family sailing vacation would not fall off the rails. We are very experienced bare boat charterers , having chartered many places and with several of Dream Yacht’s competitors. You will usually only hear the negatives about all the charter companies competing out there, but Joann and George at the Placencia base of Dream Yacht really knew their stuff and their boats. Not a big operation, we received a warm welcome and they accommodated all our particular requests. Our sailing vacation went flawlessly with no mechanical issues or delays. In fact, several of the boats got an earlier start- an extra night swinging at anchor instead of a windless , hot marina. The boats were all immaculately clean, ours included. What we really found useful and a real de-stressor was that many of the
tracks of previous charterers were saved on the chart plotter for us to compare with our own planned courses. We did our own provisioning, arriving a few days early which gave us lots of opportunity to case out the grocery options. The Publics nearby gets fresh produce on Fridays and has everything you will need if you shop there Friday afternoon. There are also several other supermarkets/ fruit stands in Placencia farther away but equally well stocked if you know when they get their deliveries. We saved on plastic water bottles by getting several big jugs in addition to the one provided on board. Dream Yacht provides these for a small fee. We also brought a hanging water filter which allowed us to rapidly filter the tap water from the boat’s water tank which gets replenished from the water maker while cruising. So, we just wanted to tip the Trip Advisor scores more towards the positive for the Dream Yacht team that helped us make some wonderful family memories under sail in the coastal waters of Belize’s barrier reef.

Took us a full 24 hours to get our boat checked out and sailing. Engine and water system still needed repair. Dinghy engine also needed work. Available swim fins and masks were in short supply and in poor condition.
I am unsure who should take the blame here; Dream Yachts or local staff.
Onshore bathroom facilities limited.

We had a good experience with Dream Yacht Charters out of Placencia. We had 2 family members as Captains, and the checkout process was convenient for them. Joann went out of his way to make sure we had what we needed for our 6-day sail.

Just returned from a 5 day sail out of the dream yacht charter base in Belize. We bareboat chartered a 2019 42 lagoon and sailed from placencia to a few of the various cays. Yoann is the base manager and was attentive to all of our needs and answered any question or concerns that we had. He went out of his way to provide us transportation to the local grocery store where we purchased provisions for the trip. His briefing of our catamaran was thorough and he helped us develop a sailing plan that worked for the amount of time we had and the activities that we wanted to do. We can tell that yoann is a hard working dedicated individual and goes above and beyond to ensure that all customers needs are met. We would definitely sail with dream yacht out of Belize again. Special thanks to yoann for all of your assistance with our amazing sailing vacation!

Picked up the catamaran, it was lovely.
We asked for a toaster they said yes, we did not get one.
Went on our way.
Then the battery would not change without the generator.
So when we turned the generator off at night the fridge and freezer did not work, so most the food went bad over the 5 days.
Then the Water ran out after day 2.
The staff basically said that it’s not a car and you should be the Mechanic and fix the problem yourself, because they give you a briefing before you leave,
Even know the part for changing the filter did not fit.
When something goes wrong you are on your own.
They don’t have a fast boat to deal with any problems, which they should have.

What a wonderful experience we had with DYC Placencia, Belize! Our time on board the L450F was truly enjoyed. The trip started well in advance during planning stage when Placencia base manager was already forthcoming with advice and information. The staff and manager of DYC base Placencia, Belize showed a keen interest in making our trip a grand experience. Especially the manager invested a lot of time to ensure we were comfortable with all tech systems. The briefing was excellent! The staff demonstrated ‘known issues’ - none of which serious - and showed a personal interest in making sure we are comfortable on board. The manager offered us a lot of detail info that clearly requires in depth knowledge and dedication (as well as a tech savvy crew to follow through…). The manager asked us to log any further issues found so he can rectify them ASAP on return to base. Our cat was found in ship shape condition. Yes, boats are boats, and we lost the stbd impeller during the trip. Tools, spares and instructions were on hand so the matter was resolved at sea within minutes. We provisioned ourselves directly from local stores and found everybody very helpful. Yes, it may be a small base, but the quality of service was truly excellent!

Great experience with George and the rest of the staff at DYC Belize. This was our fifth trip with DYC at various locations and as usual everything was good. We were on a 41 ft Bali. The boat was super clean and had the best fridge we have ever had. Can’t wait to go again next year.

We rented a catamaran sailboat with our crew of 10 and were very frustrated by the customer service and condition of the boat. Our crew has charted five different boats. We have two captains and experienced sailors and had researched extensively ahead of time. From the time we arrived, the managers were rude and unfriendly and questioned our ability to sail the boat and navigate the area. We ordered provisions ahead of time, but the managers did not check to make sure that we had everything on board. We spent the night on the boat in the marina and went to eat the first night. When we got back to the boat, we went through the provisions to see what was missing, and we realized none of our fruits and vegetables had been delivered. We told the managers when they arrived the next morning, and they admitted the grocery delivery from the market must not have arrived. They never apologized for this inconvenience. One of the managers spent over two hours going to get our vegetables and fruit, which caused us to miss out on a 1/2 day of sailing. Once we had our captain's meeting, we took off three hours behind schedule, and an hour into our trip, the boat started to have problems and the manager asked us to return so he could fix the engine. We ended up missing an entire day of sailing. Do not rent a boat from this company in the Placencia location.

I would give them a "0" if it were an option! Our bareboat sailing group has been on several charters over the past several years and have always had a great experience. This was our first time to use Dream Yacht Charter and I can guarantee that we will NOT be using the company again for any of our future excursions and I highly caution anyone looking into DYC Belize to reconsider. I could write an extremely long review (this one is just long!), but I will focus on 2 main concerns I had with DYC-Belize for your consideration, which are 1) boat maintenance, and 2) poor customer service. Let me begin by saying that as boating/sailing people, our group of 8 is not naive to the fact that things will go wrong with a boat and we have had our issues with other boats in the past. However, we have never lost confidence in a charter company and felt that we needed to abandon the charter. I cannot say the same of DYC-Belize, as our co-captains noticed some safety issues with our boat from the debrief (i.e., no wind direction indicator, issues with the battery voltage meters, and no chase boat to assist us in the case of any issues) and the issues only continued once we embarked. Despite these early concerns, we are an experienced crew and we were prepared to take the boat out only to have 2 more issues the next morning before we could even get to our first destination (i.e.,the port side engine quit running as we were pulling away from the dock- which had to be replaced; battery charge warning lights on the engines during the first hour of our trip- which ended up being the alternator). After motoring back to the dock for another hour, and having had 2 major issues with our boat, our crew determined that it would be unsafe for us to stay on the DYC boat at this point. Unfortunately, DYC has decided not to refund us for any part of our failed trip despite the fact that there were some major issues with their boat and any sane person would be concerned about going out on a boat after the issues we experienced. As if the boat and safety issues were not enough to railroad our sailing vacation, the treatment we received from the 2 men working for DYC-Belize was revolting. A sailing trip is not a cheap vacation by any means and we are 8 mature-aged working professionals (business owners, PhDs, and senior managers), but we were treated with extreme insolence from the moment we exited our taxi. We were chastised for the amount of alcohol we purchased (the same amount we have gotten on all previous charters) and the base manager went as far as gossiping to another customer about our alcohol order (one of our co-captains came up on the conversation). Not one of us was inebriated when we arrived at the dock, slept on the boat that evening, left the dock the next morning, or returned to the dock when we had the engine issues. We gave the base manager absolutely no reason to question our alcohol intake or ability to responsibly take the boat on a charter. Furthermore, the DYC did not have water on the provisioning list (the irony) and we had to figure out a way to get enough drinking water for a 6-day sail for 8 people. Then, before leaving the next morning, we realized that they had not fulfilled our entire provisioning order, as we were missing ALL of our fruits and vegetables (we cook almost all meals on the boat- these were key components to most of our meals). Needless to say, this trip started out very stressful and unpleasant. Luckily, we were able to salvage the vacation by booking with another charter company in the same area and although we lost some days on the boat, we stayed at 2 very accommodating resorts in Placencia. Other than the DYC crew and the damage to our pocketbooks, our experience in Belize and with the Belizean people was amazing.
