I visited on a Friday in July and my friend and I had the entire park to ourselves. We did not see or hear a soul until we returned to the Jutiapa entrance where we saw about 10 people.
Transportation tip:
In July of 2021, the city and surroundings are still in the grip of Covid 19. Therefore, tours in and around the capital do not exist right now. In my opinion, they were far overpriced, anyway. $70-$100 U.S. per person to go to the park from Tegucigalpa? It IS a little over an hour's drive with the last ...20 or 30 minutes on a dirt road, but please.
Normally, there's a city bus with a route to the Jutiapa entrance, but it is not running these days due to the Covid Curse.
So we hired an Uber for 750 lempiras (about $35) each way. We gave him an estimated time when we'd be done and then texted him on WhatsApp when we got reception at the tail end of the hike. And by the time we finished and went to the restroom, etc, we waited maybe 10 minutes for our ride back. For the price of one person on a tour, we both had transportation to and from the park. Park entrance was $10 for the both of us.
At the visitor center, we received a basic map of the trails. There are 8 trails of different lengths and many of them intersect. We took the Cloud Forest Trail and then the Cascada trail to the waterfall.
The Bosque Nublada (Cloud Forest) Trail loop is about 3km long if you do the whole loop. We only hiked one way to the Cascada trail. The Cloud Forest trail was mostly moderate with a few climbs. It was lush with ferns and trees, but we did not see any animals or insects at all despite being the only ones in the park at 8:30am on a Friday. This trail has about 4 different rest stops with benches and makes a good choice for family hiking.
I recommend the Cascada Trail for the obvious reason that you get to see a tall waterfall of fresh water at the end. This is an out and back trail that's 3km long down to the waterfall and then 3km back up. It is a difficult trail in that you will descend 673 meters (2,224ft) down to the waterfall. The trail is very rarely level and the climb down consists of steep, tall steps of wood, tree roots, and rocks. A large section of the trail is swampy, muddy, and slippery. This is not a trail for novice hikers. The climb back up is a bit arduous, but the climb down can be more difficult for those with balance issues or an aversion to mud. I enjoyed this trail. My friend did not as the grip of his shoes was inadequate and he slipped and fell a few times.
The waterfall at the end of the trail flows down a rock face into a clear shallow pond about six inches deep. There's no swimming here. They say the water is clean and drinkable and is one of the water supplies of the city.
There aren't any benches at the bottom of the hike except for one about 30ft away with a view of the trees blocking the view of the waterfall. Since we were the only ones there, we sat on a rock and ate our packed lunch. If the park were crowded, we would not have had a place to sit since the waterfall base area is quite small. The entire 8km loop took us 7hrs with 2 long 30 minute breaks.
I strongly recommend bringing snacks and sandwiches and water. The two of us packed 6 750ml of bottled water and it was just enough. There was a small restsurant near the entrance, but it was closed. Naturally, bring a bag to pack out all your trash. There aren't any restrooms or garbage cans along the trails, so use the restroom at the entrance.
The restroom at the entrance is nice with 4 stalls with toilet paper and a sink with 3 faucets of running water and soap.
There was also a ropes course near the visitor center. It looked like a low height team building course. I don't know the specifics of when that course is used or for whom.
There were about 3 or 4 cabins near the entrance, but no one was in them.
There is another entrance at the North end of the park, San Jacinto/El Rosario, so it is possible to hike the Principal Trail across the park (6hrs) and leave from there if you have someone to pick you up on the other side.
Mosquito repellant is strongly recommended, though there weren't many the day we went. The clouds and tree canopies shade most of the trail, so sunscreen is recommended but I never needed to reapply.
Layers of clothes are absolutely necessary since it was 15° ( 59° F) when we started hiking. It was in the 70°'s when we finished hiking at 3.
Finally, I was disappointed that we did not see exotic animals and insects on the hike despite being the only people there and the absence of rain. I saw a funky spider, some dragonflies, an agouti, and I heard, but did not see, a monkey.
However, we could hear the wind rushing through the canopy, the birdsong of birds that sounded like mockingjays from The Hunger Games, and the call of the monkey.
I hope that helps you plan your visit and hike.
Enjoy La Tigra!

La Tigra is less than an hour from the capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, and is absolutely amazing. At an altitude of over 5,000 feet it is cool and often shrouded in mists near the top. The trails are perfect for walking and for the most part are well marked but because it is so large a guide is recommended and very inexpensive. This is old growth cloud forest with a huge variety of plants, flowers, orchids and wildlife. It particularly is a birders paradise. Spend the day. It is well worth it!

This place was awesome. I love hiking and too bad I wasn’t prepared for this awesome hike. We hiked for about 3 hours and I wish I could of done the whole thing. I felt pretty safe, but like anywhere I go I don’t travel flashy or with any important documents just in case. I loved the scenery and the rainforest. The drive there was rough but well worth it! Next time I come I will bring some of my hiking gear to go longer!

I think so, I'm an Australian tourist and I felt plenty safe. However, if you're doubting, I'd recommend you to hire a guide at the entrance (maybe call ahead out of season), the people working there were all very friendly.

Are dogs permitted in the park? / Permiten perros en el parque?
Skrevet 5. mars 2015
