With quite a bit of "gold glitters" inside (on the main altar & also on the two big shrines or secondary altars on the two sides near the main altar), this main cathedral of the city for me was actually kind of a "refreshing reminder" of those visited in South America (just more in common with similar glittering interiors of the main cathedrals of the countries much further down south than the interiors of those in the countries immediately to the south which despite their spacious interiors tend to be on a "plainer side") although yes this glittering scene was to continue in the cathedrals to come as I headed further north through Central America. And likely being also a cathedral steeped in the history of the country, its "somewhat different" appearances in like 3 different periods along the country's timeline are featured on postcards (the 3 postcards that I got later from a souvenir market nearby).
Located at like the "downtown core" of the city (quite a bustling area actually with big crowds & narrow streets), there's like a nice "diagonal view" of the Cathedral from the plaza right in front (although not a very great frontal view somewhat obscured by trees on the plaza), and just about a 5-minute walk after heading out from the plaza along the "pedestrian street" on the west side (the far side across the plaza from this cathedral) is Palacio Nacional with like a national museum inside (kind of a combo museum of "history & art" but really just not much of displays to see); and also just at about halfway along that "pedestrian street" (with various shops & food places along both sides) followed by a right turn onto another similar street and after a short walk to the end is Iglesia de Dolores (with not much inside but a nice church with kind of a "pleasant atmosphere" for a quick walk around) and where right outside that church along one side of its own plaza is a nice "souvenir market" (where I got those historic cathedral postcards as mentioned above along with also some nice keychains of the city & the country).

As part of the downtown tour I had we went by this cathedral. It looked lovely and we were even able to enter to see all the gold plating everywhere, literally everywhere.

THis Chatedral reflects the mixture of the Spanish and Catholic Leaders, with the Faith of the indigenous people. You Can see this in tne Altar different reprfesentation of local fruit and trees. All the altr is covered with leaf of gold, from the sourrounded Mountanis. In the Center a big piece of Silver, was stoled and sold in the black market and recovered for internattional authorities. Finally you can see diferents paints made in 17Th and 18Th Century

It is located at the city center. Maybe the architecture is not as breathtaking as other cathedrals of Guatemala or South America, but it has its own beauty.Pay attention to details: the paintings on top of the dome. The Altar is a beauty!
The ambiance during special celebrations are quite special: Easter Week of the City´s Anniversary.
And they, if you are curious enough , you will find pieces of history on the floors and walls.
Tombs of the first religious... paintings... and so on.
The entrance wooden walls are impresive.
