Stopped in Augusta specifically to come see this building. It is an old coverted Catholic Church that is now an art studio and a wedding and event space. Standing in the back of the old Sanctuary was so surreal thinking that the church left so many years ago

Thank you for making Sacred Heart your designated stop in Augusta! The former sanctuary or as it is currently called, the Great Hall, is definitely awe inspiring with its attention to architectural details. One of my favorite aspects is watching the sun move through the stained glass windows throughout the day. Just amazing! Hope you visit again!

Not sure how many are aware of this treasure in Augusta. Formerly a Roman Catholic Church built in 1900 and now a public cultural center that is available for all kinds of events--weddings, lectures, fairs, art shows. The stained glass windows are incredible and still so beautiful after 121 years.

Thank you for your positive review! The magnificent structure has over 94 original stained glass widows, Italian marble altars, 15 distinct brick styles a barrel vaulted ceiling and graceful arches. It truly is an architectural masterpiece!

The Sacred Heart Cultural Center sounded suspicious. Why would a community center have such a Catholic name or a Catholic edifice not be called a church? There were some shady characters loitering on the sidewalk outside that might have been lawn crews avoiding work. This was an impressive edifice that did not seem active nor uncared for. As far as I could tell, it was all locked up tight. Circling the building, I located a very friendly community services group in a downstairs office.
I learned that this ancient Catholic building was scheduled for demolition when a “benefactor” offered to take over and restore the proud old building. It is now the site of concerts and community events. Yes, I was welcome to look around.
This cathedral had windows with a sequential set of events in the Life of Christ. Worship accessories, like pipe organs and pews had been removed, so open marble floors reflected the grandeur of the building. I would really like to hear a choral concert here. There was a circular stairway that seemed to go on forever. As I looked down across this amazing building I was impressed that a “benefactor” would bring life to this awesome building. What a magnificent use of personal wealth; to so enrich a community.

Thank you! Sacred Heart Catholic Church held its first service in 1900 and continued as a church until 1971 when the diocese in Savannah closed its doors. Saved from certain demolition by a generous benefactor, the structure was painstakingly restored and reopened in 1981 as Sacred Heart Cultural Center. Today, Sacred Heart is the center of cultural activities including choral concerts, festivals, art exhibitions and more. The site is also home to over 70 weddings and events each year. The community is so thankful to be able to enjoy Sacred Heart for generations to come.

Lovers of architecture and culture will appreciate the beauty of this church, both outside and in. Free to visit, the interior hosts beautiful large stained glass windows along with stately columns and arches. A trip up to the very high balcony gives a great overall view of the sanctuary.

Thank you for your review! The former Catholic Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as you pointed out, one can see why! Fifteen distinct brick styles, 94 stained glass windows (some from Germany), Italian marble altars are just some of the architectural details that visitors will discover. A special place for many! Free self guided tours and an audio tour ($5) are available.

This former church is now the art and cultural center for the city of Augusta. For a minimal price you can take an historical audio tour of the building. Be sure to tour the art gallery and gift shop before leaving.

A gem in the heart of Augusta touring sacred heart was beyond my imagination. The beauty of the flowers are among some of the best I've ever seen. We did the audio tour with headphones helping me to connect with some of the amazing aspects of this beautiful building. I can see why every girls dream is to get married there it would be almost like a magical wedding. The history behind the whole museum makes it even better!! Staff is also an amazing added bonus

This is not only a venue, but it's also a museum! They have a guided audio tour that takes you in and around every room of the beautiful three story building which was used as a Catholic Church in the past. Now it sits beautifully as a pillar of the downtown Augusta community and a landmark of our city. This place is a must visit! It's breathtaking.
