If you've never seen the Milky Way and are on the Big Island, this is your chance. If you have already seen the Milky Way and are on the Big Island, drive up Mauna Kea and see it again!
I've seen the Milky Way many times from sea level on cruises/on islands, from deserted lakes on houseboats, to high altitude on the Inca Trail or in the Rockies and the Mauna Kea experience from Onizuka Visitors Center ranks with the best. The new Saddle Road is a driver's dream with bright lane reflectors the entire way. Your car is going to gasp a little for air driving up to the 9K' visitors center, and you'll want to descend in low gear to save your brakes, but it's definitely worth the drive and LEGAL for rental cars nowadays!
My family made this a final stop on a long day that began in Kohala Coast, visited the City of Refuge, drove the "Road to the Sea", explored South Point and then Volcanoes National Park, then Rainbow Falls and dinner in Hilo and then cutting across Mauna Kea back to Kohala Coast. We arrived before the full moon started to rise and the Milky Way and stars just popped. When the moon started to rise, we called it a "bad moon rising"...Bad because it obliterated the Milky Way and "bad" because it was as orange as a sunrise...incredible! We returned a few days laters for a Mauna Kea Sunrise tour to the 4K' Summit but unfortunately the cloud cover prevented any star gazing.
FYI, due to blood flow to our eyes, we actually see stars better from the 9K' visitors center than the 14K' summit, just in case you wanted to be macho and illegally drive your rental to the summit!. Since Kilauea has stopped spewing lava, this was a great consolation prize. Also, FYI, the Onizuka visitors center officially re-opens in September when they will resume free stargazing programs.

This is a fantastic place to stargaze. When we first visited, there was a handfull of visitors. Last time the various overflow parking areas were full way before sundown. Right now, there are no evening shows and little parking as the dirt lots are being formalized. Visiting during the day is great for the visitor center/gift shop. While there are no star shows until the lots are finished, the drive up offers some not to be missed sunsets. Plus, if you already know your astronomy or just like looking, there will probably be parking places for do-it-yourself.

Take Saddle Road from either Kona or Hilo side and turn up Mauna Kea at the well marked access road. Beautiful views on the way up to the Onizuka/Hale Pohaku rest stop. At this elevation, 9300 ft. above sea level, those that are continuing to the summit should spend at least an hour to acclimate. We didn't have the right vehicle, and have been to the summit several times, so we hiked the Pu'u (hill) across the street for some great views and enjoyed the Silversword loop. There is a gift shop (of course) that also sells some food and drinks, a bathroom and several nights of the week the amateur astronomers set up telescopes to enjoy the heavens. No better place on Earth for that. Any rent a car can make it to this point, just don't expect to go much beyond 35 mph, which is the speed limit anyway. Steep grade with thinning air does not make most cars happy. Watch your brakes on the way down.

The Onizuka Center for International Astronomy Visitor Information Station (aka Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station or MKVIS) is a small complex at approximately 9200’ on your way up Mauna Kea. This is the farthest a 2WD vehicle is recommended to go. There have been reports that 2WD can summit the peak, however we felt it was not a risk we were willing to take.
Please visit their website to determine which days they have stargazing as they are no longer doing them every night as of this writing. For these nights, it is best to show up an hour before sunset at the latest to avoid being turned back. The skies are generally far clearer than in Hilo, so double-check the site for how well the “seeing” is (stargazing conditions) for that specific evening.
I am getting into astrophotography but I found it difficult to take decent shots, due to cars coming and going repeatedly. So for those interested in snapping some pics of the universe, please keep this in mind. It will be later in the evening when the traffic dies down to a pace that allows you to take those long exposed shots.

This review is for the Visitor Center where you stop before going to the top of Mauna Kea, and where astronomers gather at night. I must say that being here at 12 noon was not a friendly time to arrive. I had read my travel book and saw that this location had restrooms, a gift shop, snacks, and displays about Onizuka. Having watched him lose his life on live TV with a class of 5th graders when Challenger exploded, I was thinking I would pay my respects to him. Somewhere as I approached the center, three young people toting a telescope came out and asked what I wanted. I said I would like to know where the displays and visitor center entrance was located. The response was that there was nothing available. I asked about restrooms, and I was informed they were in the back. And that was that. We visited the facilities and also hiked around a bit, and left. If there is a visitor center with displays and snacks. I never saw it. Was it closed? That was never clear. If you drive this far and need a restroom, then you are probably in good shape.

The stars here are amazing. The Visitors Center puts on a show most nights with telescopes set out and aimed at various celestial objects. Well worth the time. A few caveats. Visibility is very weather dependent and the recent few weeks (late Jan-mid Feb '18) have been pretty rough for viewing so check with the website before driving up. It is high (9,000') so there is thin air and it tends to be cool/cold (at or below freezing). Visiting has become very popular, parking is limited, and arriving much after 5PM may find the lots full. For the very best viewing of stars go when there is no moon. There is not much food available so plan ahead. Great staff that is knowledgeable and friendly.

We went up to this observation area (9000' level) during the day and stayed until dark to look through the telescopes and do some star/ constellation gazing. They put on a good star gazing talk and the complex had some displays, a movie and a gift shop to enjoy while waiting. Make sure you bring a fleecy for the evening, it does get a bit chilly after dark (even for a Canadian!)

Truly one of the highlights of our trip. No matter where you live in the world you will not see as many objects in the night sky as you will here. The staff are extremely informative and super eager to share their knowledge. Truly, they are passionate about their work. The telescopes are powerful - I saw the clouds on Jupiter. Yes, clouds on Jupiter. How awesome is that!!! And the presentation they give to explain the night sky is FREE! You cannot go wrong! Just dress warmly. It was 77F when we returned to Kona but only 47F 9,200 feet up at Onizuka where we were stargazing. A truly magical experience you should not miss!
