This morning we drove long hours (4 hours round trip) to get to Pololu Valley.
We wanted to hike to Honokane Nui Valley Lookout. But, no siree. Supposedly there was “a landslide” and the owner of the property close to the hiking trail “did not want to be liable” if someone gets injured. A total hogwash. There was no landslide that washed away the trail. Whoever owns the property close to the trail hanged “no trespassing” and “private property” sign right at the end of black sand beach and at the beginning of the trail leading to Honokāne Nui Lookout. And the lady on the entrance to the trail to the beach gave as a horror story speech about how dangerous this small part of the trail is (“people break legs, ankles; Portuguese man of war along with numerous dead tilapia and dangerous bacteria on the beach”) Yes, it was a bit steep but not a single Portuguese man of war or dead tilapia.
The view was very beautiful. However, yet again (they also forbid us to even take a step and hike down on Waipiʻo Valley Road) people on Big Island are showing they are not hospitable at all.

This place is so beautiful. You park along the road and walk down to the lookout. There were people set up under a tent talking about the land and their ancestors and asking everyone to be respectful. They also were making sure everyone that was hiking the trail down below to the beach had proper footwear and understood it can be strenuous and slippery. We hiked all the way down. It was very beautiful. Hiking back up was tiresome and not easy. We did this hike in our closed toe Kean’s hiking sandals. They were appropriate, but I almost would’ve preferred my actual hiking boots. This was definitely one of our favorite activities while visiting the island. On our way out we stopped at a roadside Hawaiian ice stand that was wonderful!

Amazing view from the lookout & hike down to the gorgeous, rocky beach. Bring good hiking shoes as the trail is steep and can be slippery even when dry. The hike down takes about 20 minutes and 40 minutes coming back. Guides at the top will give you trail information. Please respect this Hawaiian sacred valley & burial site and don’t cross the ropes. Stick to the beach area. Parking can be a challenge as it’s very popular. Absolutely worth it!

Small parking lot. A lot of people park on the street leading up to the parking lot and trailhead. It might be worth it to go all the way up. There are volunteers there that help spread information about the sacred land in the valley. It's a steep hike down and up, and probably around 40min to 1hr if you're not too slow or in a rush.

The volunteers there help guide the parking situation, save a few toward the end for hikers, and the few towards the front for people who just want to be there for 10min or so for the view. Overall a good experience, and the views are breathless.

Beautiful view from the top of the hill but the real treasure is the hike down to the valley. There are several switchbacks that make it fairly easy to navigate if it is dry. Once you get to the bottom there is a gorgeous valley and a nice beach as well. The ropes on the other side of the beach protect a burial ground that is sacred to the Hawaiian people so be respectful. Take some pictures and stroll around a bit. King Kamehameha I grew up here so there is a very real connection to Hawaiian history. If you want beautiful views and towering sea side cliffs and mountains it will not disappoint. If you are looking for a little Hawaiian cultural education check out the Kamehameha Statue in town. The interpretive signs around the community center are informative.

The views are nice and the road to get here is nice as well. But the place is far away and though nice, I dont think its spectacular.

You can hike to the base of the valley. We were told that it will take 2 hours to do so and we didnt do it.

There is no parking or entrance fee.

The view was gorgeous, it was nice and sunny out over the ocean when we there, with cloud over the lovely lush valley. But the parking was crazy and confusing! The parking lot itself is very small so there were locals there, directing traffic and telling visitors they can only park for 10 minutes to enjoy the view. They were pretty strict about kicking us out when we only overstayed by about 5 minutes so that we could grab a quick snack out of our cooler. We figured out after the fact that if you want to stay longer, or hike down to the beach you have to park along the road, well outside the small parking lot. We didn’t bother trying to squeeze in along the road and do the hike as the road was very congested with cars and we did not bring proper shoes for the trail, it looked very steep. There are no washrooms but other reviewers said that a park down the road has them. It might be preferable to park at the park then walk along the road to the lookout, being careful to dodge the traffic congestion. The last few miles of road before the lookout are narrow with a lot of one lane bridges, take care around the curves.

This a great stop with wonderful views of the valley a small beach. Even without doing the steep hike down to the beach, this is highly recommended.

Anything free in Hawaii is great! This was a great way to spend an afternoon waiting for our hotel check in. Drive was nice and little traffic. Trail is a bit rough but very scenic!

There is a 1 mile hike down the hill which takes you to the black sand beach and it is well worth the hike. It took us one hour to get here, one and half hour to go down the hike. We enjoyed sitting by the ocean watching the waves then hiked back up.
