The historic lighthouse is situated on the northern tip of Kaua’i. An impressive site overlooking the bluffs that would have proved dangerous to earlier sailors without the guidance of the light. Today, it is unmanned, but still an important part of Island history.
Moreover, the lighthouse stands guard of important bird sanctuaries. The birds - kestrels, petrils and boobies - you can see swoop over the waves to reach their natural nesting spaces. Once in a while you may even be treated to the view of a monk seal on the sands below.
This is an interesting and informative half-hour stroll.
The whole sanctuary is now dedicated to the very late senior and much respected U.S. Senator, Daniel K. Inouye, who did much to protect and promote his home state.

Very interesting to see the lighthouse and the various birds in the nature preserve. Well worth a morning. Great views. It is a very short drive from the Princeville area to the Lighthouse.

We originally came by on a day the park is closed and saw we could come back the next day and made the reservation. It was worth it, even though it is self guided. We parked and went to the light house out on the point and the views are excellent, which is because everyone needed to be able to see the lighthouse for miles away to not run aground. Be aware that there are a lot of birds and bird poop, so be prepared and just recognize you will smell it a bit on the walk up the paths to the lighthouse. This was well worth the time.

When you visit the lighthouse be sure to stop at the parking area just before you enter the gate. The ocean view and the view of the lighthouse are beautiful. Travel on through the gate to get to the lighthouse. It's a short walk with more beautiful views along the way, and there are signs explaining what birds you are seeing . The lighthouse itself is pretty, but we actually enjoyed the views more. Be sure to stop at the gift shop for unique gifts, a bathroom, and more views!

Beautiful views and a great location. They also contain a great deal of information regarding the local birds and other wildlife. You do need to navigate the .gov website to reserve a time to visit.

We went on a crummy day that was full of torrential rain and it wasn't pleasant - but we went back when the rain had ceased and took some pictures from the look out. The gift shop was great and the restroom were nice and clean - it would have been a very pleasant visit had the weather been cooperative - but I won't let that bias the review - just avoid in the rain and fog.
They do require reservations and charge around $20 for two people and a car and you can see it all in under an hour easily.

Wife and I visited the Kilauea during our Kilauea Point Wildlife Refuge outing. The lighthouse sits on the point, which is on the far end of the wildlife refuge past. The physical structure was closed to the public at the time of our visit, so we could only observe the building from the outside. It was an interesting structure and an intriguing history to it. A nearby builing had some signs and exhibits that provided some additional details about the lighthouse.

A great way to see birds, enjoy the scenery, and check out the lighthouse. Make reservations before you go, but it is worth the $11 each. About an hour is plenty of time.

Book a reservation at recreation.gov at least a week before. The scenery on the point is beautiful. I love seeing the coastline and the waves crashing on the shore. The color of the water from this point is beautiful too.
There are birds to see while there. There are binoculars you can borrow there. Some birds fly over the point but MANY are across the inlet on the other shore.
If someone is telling the story of the man the lighthouse is named after, it is worth your time to listen.

Can you get to the cliff and see the view even when the lighthouse is closed or is the road and area entirely blocked when it’s closed?

I'm not sure. We happened to visit the day before we left Kauai, and it happened to be open. I would recommend going when it's open and taking the Lighthouse tour. The tour was interesting.

there is a place where fees are charged to enter and there may be a gate across the driveway. You could probably walkdown to the light without anyone stopping you. If you do a google search you are bound to come up with some site addressing your question.

Although the point is moot as I write this, the park is operated by the Federal Government, so it may well be affected in the event of anothershutdown. The site's phone number is 808-828-1413.
