Only a portion of one wall left and that was moved into its present location. Some placards with interesting historical information. Too bad more of the prison is not there but still worth a stop.

replanted blocks from further up the hill; best way to appreciate this very small exhibit would be to read about the prison, the Smallpox outbreak and the atrocities the prisoners experience here. quick stop

I drove by this place while visiting my hometown after being away for 10 years. Yup, the Alton Prison "walls" are still there... but, if you are looking for a historic building, don't bother visiting this site. If I recall correctly, the original prison - infamous as a hell-hole for Confederacy prisoners during the Civil War - was totally demolished some years after the war ended. Local citizens "built" these two, pitiful, partial walls as a "remembrance."

If memory serves me from two weeks ago (and I decided then I definitely was NOT going to take a photo of the place these days), there's now some utility-equipment-things planted on the ground just a few feet from the "walls." I'm thinking what little "sentiment" the "walls" might offer for a Civil War buff has been all but depleted by the current scene.

There really is not much left of the building and only a few signs. It is hidden off the beaten path and you would have to know where it was. There is free street parking available. It was a good stop to learn a little something about the men who served and were housed there.

A confederate history must, There isn't much there any longer, but the history behind the place and stories attached to it, makes a great place to stop.

Like other reviewers mentioned, this is a bit difficult to locate and not much of the ruins are left. However, if you like American and/or Civil War history you need to see this. It’ll take 10 minutes or less.

Not too much here but still a neat little stop to view the ruins that are left. Several detailed informative boards give some history of the Prison and its' role during the Cilvil War. It's not the best thing in Alton, but if you like history and don't expect too much it's an interesting visit.

Little difficult to find if you don't know where your going, as there isn't much of it left. One small wall that isn't even in it's original location. It was moved across the parking lot. But the history boards are very informative. Worth the visit.

There are a couple of kiosks with information, too, but that's about it. From the reviews I read, it is what I expected to see, but I still had to visit since my 3rd g-grandfather died there as a Confederate prisoner-of-war in 1863. I don't blame them for tearing down the original building which was home to such misery (it was also the state penitentiary prior to the War), but I feel there could at least be a small museum dedicated to a pretty major Civil War prison.

There is a small wall of the prison thats left. Some how they forgot to preserve history. On the side of the wall there is billboard types of information interesting. Tells you who was jailed here. I have pictures of all that was there.
