Fes is very famous with the fabrication of tiles, and leather. This place is a very good experience to have a good idea of the whole process of the fabrication of leather products, from wallets till jackets. The only drawback here is the odour of course, but it's not anybody's fault. They even offer mint leaves to make it easier.
Anyway, it is a very interesting, and out of the box place, and also a perfect opportunity to get very good products in a very reasonable price

We visited this establishment as part of a tour group. After selecting jackets, we were then scammed by the tannery for 10 times the agreed price ($4,400.00 USD versus $440.00). Our local “guide” was in on the scam, and rushed us out after we paid. We checked our card charge online, and then showed it to our main guide. He was able to secure our refund, but it ruined our entire trip. Not at all recommended.

We were this historic tannery during our stay in Fes, at the entrance give mint leaf to put under the nose to make less smell that comes from the washing and coloring tanks of the skins in the open air, arrived on the terrace you can see the work on the pools, the washing of the skins is done with quicklime, and the workers wear boots and gloves, in the coloring tanks instead work inside the tanks without protections, very touching to see the working conditions

The infamous tannery in Fes is a must visit. We joined a walking tour and we were able to view the tannery from a rooftop and escaped the hassle of the salesmen.
After the process was explained to us, naturally the guide brought us to the shopping levels. We weren't interested and just waited around for the rest to finish their shopping.

I went here 12 years ago and bought a camel leather bag that I loved and used daily for many years so I was excited to go back and get another. The tour is absolutely worth it but be careful buying here. Some of the leather good are authentically Moroccan, but I think a lot are now made in China or somewhere else to keep up with the demand from the huge increase in tourism in Morocco.
In my excitement I got scammed - bought a bag I was told was "camel belly" and that's why it was so soft. I bought it Friday Oct 11th 2024 and I'm writing this Tuesday Oct 22nd and it's already showing some cracks (see photo). Actual camel leather is very durable. There were warning signs and I should have known better, so here are some important things to check before you buy:
- is the color very uniform? If so, probably not made locally
- are there many versions of the bag all in plastic? If so, probably bought cheap somewhere else
- most importantly, DOES THE BAG SMELL LIKE SH*T? If it does, hooray! You found a real one! If it just smells like normal leather it's probably not local.
So make sure you pull the mint leaves out of your nose and give it a good deep sniff - my bag years ago smelled terrible for 2 weeks then settled down, and my husband's work bag also smells terrible (less so today) so at least we know that one is real!
If you're fine with an imported bag that's ok, but make sure you don't pay the "authentic" prices. Bargaining is part of the process and guides say you should start with countering with 1/3-1/2 of their initial asking price. But if you suspect the bag is a cheap knock-off, definitely drop that to way less!
I hope this saves some people from the disappointment of coming home with a poor quality bag. The bags that are actually made in Fez are beautiful, high quality, and durable.

The guide walked us through the processes used to prepare the leather and use the leather-based items. Additionally, there's a store, so this is a great chance to purchase goods made of leather.

We had a view from the rooftop from "Chouara Tabakhanesi" with a young man from the leather shop who explained the process taking place and answered our questions. He himself had worked the tannery but had had caustic burns which he showed us.
The place was an incredible assault on the senses and seeing the hard work that these men do was seriously impressive.
We purchased a nice leather bag from the shop and also some rugs from their friends Berber rug shop across the road "Tissage Berbere"

Do not get any custom work done here. I’m not even sure the inventory that they are selling are made by them. Asked for some custom work and they asked for payment in advance. When I picked it up it was inferior quality than the ones in the store. I argued but was told it was better even though it looked like crap. Since it wasn’t much money I cut my losses and just left. Never going back there again.

Olá pessoal! Vcs sabem me dizer se é possível visitar o cortume no sábado? As atividades funcionam normalmente?
Obrigada.

Pelo que eu saiba abre todos os dias. Confirma no hotel que vc está hospedada. É imperdível. Mas o cheio é bem ruim. Para que gosta de casaco de couro é como encontrar uma caixa de lápis de cor.

We are going to be in Fez on Friday. Are the tanneries open on Friday?
Skrevet 18. juli 2017
Almost everything in the Medina is closed on Fridays. Rearrange your itinerary to visit a different day or you will miss the real experience!
Skrevet 28. februar 2019
How much time do we need to spend here? Please advise. Thanks!
