The medina of Fés el-Bali as a whole is wonderful, history, culture, art, thousand-year-old spirituality, the problem is all the surroundings.
I'm used to Muslim countries and the insistence of street vendors and merchants, it doesn't bother me, it's part of the Arab-Mediterranean culture. In Fés, however, the merchants are, in my opinion, a secondary issue, the main problem is represented by nuisances, swindlers and idlers who are more annoying than gadflies. Around the tanneries they attack you, someone insults you even if you reject them, they see tourists as bags of money and try to extract money from you in any way, some actually follow you. They exploit the labyrinth of the medina and are ready to circumvent and deceive any unaware traveler who hesitates at a crossroads. Non-existent police.
At night, forget about visiting the medina, everything closes and the shady characters mentioned above multiply exponentially.

Dyers' Souk - Fès El-Bali - Morocco 🇲🇦
Sabaghine Souk - سوق الصباغين
In the midst of the labyrinths of the Old Médina of Fès there is also the Souk of the wool and fabric dyers. Characteristic and evocative are the many colored wool skeins hanging on the walls and the spools of multicolored agave thread. Raising your eyes towards the sky you can admire a palette of colours, an earthly paradise for photography lovers. A multitude of colors, vermilion red, yellow, indigo, pink, offer one of the most enchanting sights to the eye. A small characteristic stretch of the Medina where the artisans with their bare arms sink and sink again into large pots, dyeing the skeins of wool each with a different colour, using colors coming from nature such as saffron and other plants that leave intense and characteristic odors .
The wool is worked by hand, cleaned of impurities and washed. After drying, we proceed with carding, in other words the wool fibers are combed with a wire brush, to be untangled. Then the wool is spun and wrapped around the rock.
After a further wash in hot water and we move on to the actual dyeing. The so-called natural dyes are obtained from various plants; saffron flowers for yellow, reseda for shades from yellow to green, madder for red variations..
Although this market has lost some of its business in recent years due to the increasing use of industrial dyes, some small shops can still be seen.
But with chemical dyes it is impossible to find all the shades of colors that traditional artisans obtain.
Most of the wool is used for the production of Moroccan carpets.

Awful!!!

We came with my partner to Morocco, the experience was very good, until, of course, our arrival in Fez. First of all, we were scammed with the hotel, we selected the one we liked, we entered the room and two hours later Booking "had made a mistake" and booked others later than us. They change us to a much much much worse one, they charge us the same (on Booking it said 10 euros less), but well, so far only a scam... The problem came when we went for a walk through the medina. Everything was incredibly beautiful... A Mexican told us to go into his mother's restaurant, it was early and after seeing the menu we said that maybe we would come back later. He accompanied us outside and we went to the right, he told us that it was to the left and that he was guiding us, as we already know how this works, we said no, but he insisted that he was not a guide nor did he want money, like "he had a family restaurant" We believed it." He lost us on purpose, he asked us for 5 euros and we gave him one, he said he wanted tobacco... We refused, but he messed us up in such a way in 10 seconds that we couldn't go back. From there the terror began. .. Small streets, many without lights, many men looking with laughter and impudence, "we were the only European couple at that time"... When we were about to return and the GPS was working again... Which by the way, leaves doing it all the time in the medina... Xicos and men in the streets told us that there was no way out, we knew it was a lie, but they play with people's fear, with the attitude they show... Many are in cahoots ...Well, for an hour, terrified... Finally, we told two xicos to accompany us to the center, they kept losing us to act as guides... Although my partner insisted that he wanted to go to the center because I was not feeling well . When they finished... They asked for 5 euros per head. We assume that there will be many experiences... Ours... We have never been so scared, do not go unless you have a guide.

The Fes el Bali Medina is one of the best in the world! There is everything there. So many cool sights, markets with fruits, clothes, souvenirs, leather goods, etc. The Fes el Bali Medina is incredible! It is a must see and you can’t miss it. I highly recommend for a “real” taste of Morocco!

One of our favourite part of our itinerary. Imagine the history behind the fortress where people trade and sell their possessions. Brings us to when Jesus was there and living the experience through alleyways.

I stayed in a riad in this neighborhood for 3 days and just walked around here. It is much cleaner and more easy to navigate than that of Meknes. There are many things to do and see here: shops selling jewelries, spices, clothings, etc., small restaurants providing cheap and delicious cuisines, visiting medersas/schools and other attractions, etc.

Shop owners are kind and helpful. They let you look around, no pressure to buy ( based on my experience here). Recommended to visit and enjoy the ambience.

Fes El Bali is the ancient walled medina with narrow, car-free streets and ornamented entryways like Bab Guissa and the Blue Gate. The vast 9th-century Karaouiyne University is tiled in vivid painted ceramics, while the towering R’cif Mosque overlooks a lively market square. Souk vendors specialize in perfumes, spices, lamps, and leather, and dining choices range from street kebabs to gourmet restaurants.
