THE BEST PARTS: beautiful land, many standard and active animals, basic and tidy chalets (we stayed in the small chalet (“Hartebeest”, buy the watering hole), and was the coolest part of our experience. With no one else around for miles but the animals. We were told the only predators in the reserve are leopards and hyenas, and although we never saw any, there was still enough excitement happening within the camp site to keep us happy. The kitchen had hot plates, silverware, utensils, a fridge, and toaster oven. The water in the tap is both hot and cold as needed. There is a nice breeze through the chalet all day and evening to keep you comfortable.
LESSER PARTS: we tried to book a chalet for 2 nights, 1 week in advance, but we couldn’t pay over the phone b/c their card reader was giving them errors, (which was fine with us). Instead, we were told to pay on arrival, which we did, they charged us for only 1 night, so I wanted to pay again for the 2nd night that we booked for. She instead to stay for 1 night, and pay for night 2 tomorrow (Which was ok, fine.) We also wanted to plan activities in advance, but we realized there was only 1 driver/guide there, who was reluctant to book for 7:30am (which, ok, if he has a preference, that’s fine.) so we booked for 10:30am. In the morning we were picked up from camp to go to the lodge and meet the vehicle for safari. We were asked where are bags were, and we told her we were staying a 2nd night. She told us we needed to get our bags and move to a chalet farther back from the watering hole because they booked out our chalet to someone else (not really fine) We were disappointed, but shrugged it off and went home after our 1 night stay and game drive instead of what we planned our weekend for. We are chill and flexible people, so we went with the flow, but for some people, this may be a huge let down.
There is no instruction such as “make sure if you need or want anything before we drive you to camp (like food or basics) because we won’t want to drive you back and forth many times” it’s a 20 min drive, and they have to call in someone to drive you back. Once they drop you, that’s it, and it’s too late to plan anything else. There are no scheduled times for transferring within the reserve, and transfers are an annoyance. (It’s too far just to drive one person back and forth down a extremely bumpy road.)
Our guide was also fine, although a bit apathetic about what he needed to do. He did on this day, seem mildly annoyed with anything outside of what he was required. (To be fair to him though, maybe he was having a bad day.)
Although I am completely unaware of how much employees here are paid, something tells me that the reserve should be paying employees much more for their work, time and effort. If they were given higher payment by the employer, I feel they would (as anyone would) feel happier about what they do everyday, and in turn, the reserve would see more profit and growth.
I wish Mokolodi and their staff all the best in the future.

We reserved a campsite in the Mokolodi Nature Reserve close to Gabarone on our way to South Africa after a 3-week 4x4 Botswana trip. The Nature Reserve was easy to find and at the reception we were told to enter the park through a second gate and follow the signs to Chalets & Campsites and then to Campsites (no clear direction or indication of the time required). It turned out to be a long (4+ km) curved badly maintained stong track with big stones requiring a 4x4 and taking more than 25 minutes to find our campsite (we were the only campers). The sites are far apart (good for privacy) but with poor signs to the various sites. As we wanted to have diner in the restaurant we had to return and had an excellent diner but had to return to the campsite in the dusk and too late to light up the donkey boiler etc.
The campsite offered a boiler, shower, toilet, braai, flush toilet, dustbin, wash basin and fire place. No electricity, no lights. Cars passing during the night. And of course baboons.
Not our best camping experience in Botswana.
Our advice: come early and take your time to find the campsite.

I was seriously dissatisfied, we asked for a chalet for 2 and then at the last minute they said the only availability was a chalet for 6 almost double the price 😡 we agreed as it had been along day .. supposedly the chalet had just been renovated…. Untrue, it was in serious need of a renovation and in the morning no water. Also the 2 person chalet stayed free … a shame it could be a loveyp’ace but it was a ripoff

We had a great time at the Game reserve. Got to see 3 different animals for the first time, Impalas, a Red Hartebeest, and the Greater Kudu. We also got to see a male Giraffe (he said he knew the sex because of its darker spots as opposed to the female ones that have lighter spots here) sitting down, waited for it to get up but it didnt for a long time. At the end of the ride we also got to see some Zebras with more Impalas. Our driver was really nice and gave us a great tour.

They are rip offs! You have to buy a full year membership to drive around the park with your own car. This rule isn’t communicated in their website at all, so we drove all the way here for nothing.

Mokolodi is a peaceful place to spend hours in nature. The restaurant is amazing and you can just sit and watch the animals or even an amazing sunset. So many things to do. The snake park and animal sanctuary is also a very impressive visit. Definitely the place to go to recharge your batteries and appreciate nature.

Exactly one year after the first time, we came here again since our year pass was coming to an end. This time we saw literally not one single mamal in the whole park! And again we couldn't believe that they mark SOME roads as 4x4 only. We drive a brand new Landrover and I can assure you you need a 4x4 for every single road in the park. And moreover they are so badly kept that you get scratches all over your car from branches and risk punctures at all the stony roads. And for what doing the trouble: there is nothing to see. We did hear the restaurant isn't bad but it was closed so we could not try that. But the "park" itself is rubish. Utterly rubish. Please note that I have written 2700 reviews here and there aren't many with a 1 dot note.....

Mokolodi is the perfect place for one-on-on Meeting interventions. Staff are super great and the food absolutely great and good value for money.

1.We would like to do a game drive. Do we need to book it beforehand? Or can we book it right away on site?
2.What time interval should we choose to increase our chances to spot animals?

Hi Yasemin!
It's better to book in advance.
And as far as I remember the receptionist there told us that it's better to do the drive in the morning.

If you are driving with your own truck you just need to show up in the gate. If you want to get a guided tour I would recommend driving.
Enjoy!

My wife and I will be traveling to Gabarone in September with our son who will be 18 months old at the time. We have heard plenty of horror stories about Safari close calls and inept guides that will keep us from going into the brush with our son. Of course a trek to Africa would seem incomplete without some wildlife experience though, so can anyone advise is this reserve safe for children? I understand that they do not have elephants or lions (probably our two biggest concerns). What about hippos? Has anyone had any close calls or dangerous moments at the reserve?

Hi Ryan
I think the two answers above sum it up beautifully, it is a very safe park. Enjoy your visit to our beautiful country, by remembering all wild animals can be dangerous no matter how cute and docile they look, and just be sensible! Enjoy!
