We had a 3 night stay at the newly opened (January 2022) Ankasa Reserve Lodge which is situated right by the gates to to the National park. This was part of a 16 day birding trip with Ashanti African Tours.
The rainforest here is an amazing place for bird life, not the easiest of birdwatching because of the very dense vegetation. Our very competent guide Jackson had an uncanny gift for spotting the birds under difficult conditions and thanks to him we saw a huge number of species that were new to us.
The lodge is extremely nice with 6 wooden houses situated apart from the main dining area. They have one very large bedroom with A/C and ceiling fan, a large bathroom with huge shower and outside a wrap around verandah that overlooks the creek that is the boundary to the reserve.
There is also another building that has smaller rooms, these have toilet/shower facilities in a separate block.
The food here was the best we had in our entire trip and the staff could not have been more helpful.
The lodge have their own landrovers and we were driven in by the reserve rangers. There is only one road in and out of Ankasa Reserve and it was pretty muddy and bumpy in places! It is a pristine area of lower Guinea rainforest and well worth a visit, not just for the excellent birding but also for the butterflies and of course the forest itself.

I am currently studying for my Masters by Research at the University of Chester, UK. I had an amazing privilege to spend Jan - April, 2019 in Ankasa. First of all, Ghana is not like Tanzania, Kenya or South Africa, animals will rarely walk out in front of you, mainly because none of them are big enough for you to notice. However Ankasa has primates, duiker, civets, elephants (Note: in my three months I saw very few mammals but this is because they are hunted in the area), the birds in the area put on an amazing display if you take the time and are patient enough to wait for them. We saw groups of turacos running up the trees and its incredible - they are unlike any bird you will experience in europe!

Ankasa is a tropical rainforest so it is very hot/humid. From the start of our trip we avoided air con as it only makes your adjusting harder, we slept in tents in the forest for most of our stay. Although if you are visiting Frenchman's lodges about a 30 walk from Ankasa main entrance is luxury... the food is incredible and the lodges range in amenities (Ask to see whats avaliable as there are cheaper options which are still lovely.. ranges from 100 GHS tp 70 GHS a night)

There is too much for me to mention however, if you have any questions about Ankasa please let me know, I can even put you in contact with our incredible guide Amankwa who will show you the best of the forest!

Not a place for a safari or multiple animal sightings but great for bird watching. plus with a good hike you may spot some mountain elephants. There are some Leopards etc there but it's best not to see them :). This is a rich-dense forest with all the feelings of the tropics, wear boots when you are taking the hike.

The only animals I saw was zebras, one ostrich and baboons. They already explained what i was going to see from the begging. So I knew what to expect. We did climb a mountain and go through a bat cave. There were some amazing views from on top of the mountain. Also up there you can not take a bad picture.

Ankasa was one of the highlights of the trip. To sit having breakfast under the forest canopy with African Goshawk chipping away in its display flight overhead, to see Blue-moustached Bee-eaters twice, to have lunch with Common Agamas, to see Crested Guineafowl - all amazing. Great forest walks. Such atmosphere. And did I say about the Dwarf Crocodile? It was so incredible!!!

When you see that beautiful forest you would like to walk, sit down under a tree and enjoy of its stateliness, but that desire gets impossible. First, you are almost obliged to pay a motorbike for your tour, why you are going to do a tour on a forest reserve with a motor bike? It doesn't make sense! But they argue that the places of interest are very far so you finally pay for it and then you realize that the distance is walkable. Lazy tour guide?
Second, you have to pay for a tour guide per hour, per person, so that bucolic desire of enjoy the nature, relax and take some fresh air becomes a worry because you have with you a cash register adding minutes to your bill.
Finally, that person you are paying for be your guide just give you 3 or 4 names of birds that you hear during the walk and poor answers to the questions you can think of.
To much money for a visit that you can't enjoy.

We spent two nights camping at Ankasa as part of a birding trip to Ghana; the forest habitat is quite amazing and the bird and animal life do not disappoint. Specialities include such hornbill species as Black-casqued and Yellow-casqued; Nkulengu Rail is also a speciality, though we did not see it. The resident kingfisher species include such beauties as Shining Blue, and we also had excellent looks at the elusive and scarce African Finfoot from the bridge at the park entrance (along with nesting Cassin's Flycatcher). The park is huge and it is not possible to explore more than a small portion of it during any one visit. The camping facilities are basic but very good, though given the very high heat and humidity (day temperatures around 30° C, going down only slightly at night), the tents can be extremely hot and the sleeping mats, while perfectly adequate, can also be very hot because they are plastic-covered (though a sheet is supplied). There are shared shower and toilet facilities which are perfectly adequate. It is possible to have laundry done at a very reasonable price (though watch out for mixed-up clothing on delivery--we had to sort out things with another couple). Being able to camp in the heart of the rain forest is an exceptional experience and well worth the minor inconveniences, though many people do find the constant high heat and humidity hard to bear.
