This was a great place to find some beautiful handicrafts from Ghana. Don’t be put off by the sellers who try to get your attention to buy something or that you need to haggle. That is half the fun. I’ve been to numerous handicraft centers throughout Africa and it is similar. They are not being rude - it is just different. I got some unique gifts to bring home. Now that I know where it is I will shop there again on my next trip.

The title implies that this might be a museum (at least that’s what I thought it might be) but it’s a souvenir shopping area with probably about 50-75 souvenir vendor stands with everything from wood carvings and tee shirts to straw baskets and kente cloth. A great stop to purchase souvenirs and insure that you’re buying locally made products. Best of all you can bargain with the vendors.

Ended up followed by a bunch of vendors, all of them trying to persuade me to visit their shops. I actually came here to see vintage Ashanti, Gouro and Baule masks. I was not interested at all in fabrics or statues of rhynos and hippos carved the day before. Basically, at some point, everyone was trying to sale me something, no matter what.
I managed to buy some lovely Gouro masks, although it was not easy. They asked for incredible cheeky prices and love to negociate. It seems that negociating is their main hobby. When you try to get a decent price, they start to make you to buy more.
I don't really recommend this place unless you have a lot of time to waste with stubborn vendors.

I've been here a good number of times to buy fabric, beads, drums, paintings and crafts. I always find a good selection for a good price.

Great little market, there is space to make you feel that you can manage your way round it, but it in really quite vast. The day we were there there was loud live music in the square up front. Do be prepared to haggle, but be friendly too, you can buy a lot here (but not cloth, go to Makola Market or elsewhere for that) At the back of the market, there is a whole continuation with sculptures and true cultural artifacts. We spent additional hours there, and became fascinated with some of the antique cultural masks and statues. Upon inquiry with the shop sellers, the tru antique hunters know where to find them, and this is their real business , not the little arts and craft stuff for tourists, but I was really happy that they were so pleased to share the history etc of the pieces and their cultural significance. Toward the east side of the market, you will find a whole line of shacks where the industry of creating the trinkets goes on, we ended up in one shack getting a drumming lesson. It was all very light hearted, not too hard a sell, and lots of fun for all!

If you want to buy some local art this is the place to go. Yes there are a number of other shops in Accra, but if you want to see a variety and love to hustle then this is your spot!
I have been going there for more than 20 years to get friends and family gifts. Must say it takes a lot of patience to face the sellers. You become everyone’s best friend and you must look at everyone’s goods. Just stay patient and remember not to accept the first price they make. You must hustle that is part of the joy of the visit. When you tired, take a break and enjoy a cold beverage in front at the restaurant.
The only reason I give it 3 is because I don’t like the attention from the hawkers. If they left me alone to browse I would probably spend a lot more time and even spend more money!

We braved the constant haranguing of the sellers for our lucky friends and undeserving relatives back home. Having been prewarned of their tactics we were prepared and headed through the melee to the back of the market where it was quieter and the more genuine sellers seemed to be. We got some lovely items and the sellers were keen to give as much time and attention as you wanted if they thought you were going to buy something (we had hundreds of paintings brought out and shown to us one by one).
Be prepared to haggle and haggle hard! (I managed to get 300 cedis off the price of one item). It can be overwhelming but if you’re braced there are some genuine items available amongst the typical tourist traps.

You can find anything Ghanaian - and I do mean anything - here. Gorgeous textiles, kente cloth, artwork, wood carvings, mud cloth, beadwork, etc... Ghanaians are amazingly talented artists! However, 'gird' yourself prior to entry!!! Ladies, travel with men. There will be about a dozen men ready to accost you upon entry. Please be sure to BE VERY FIRM and continue to say 'no thank you' for next 20 mins as they harass you throughout market. No need to be unfriendly --- however, the salesforce here is FIERCE and you must relax and enjoy yourself despite the incessant haranguing ang haggling (((it's FUN))).

Great market. I do suggest walking to the back of the market where the best local stands are. In the front you have a lot of Chinese imitation.
