Took my kids on a boat trip to the Island. It’s was out of this world. The rocks, the birds, the little cute beach and the water are really totally beautiful. The guide was also super good. I would love to go again if I have time.

Iles de la Madeleine according to the guide had never had any buildings built on it successfully. The Baobab trees are very unique. Since only a few people go over at a time it is not crowded and it gives great views back to Dakar and has a lot of very pretty water picture taking opportunities. When the boat docs there is a nice little natural pool that you can swim in. There are no amenities on the island so be prepared with your own food, drink, and anything else you might need. To get there, visit the Iles de la Madeleine National Park on the Corniche Quest in Dakar.

We tried to get to the island in November 2019- it’s been closed since September due to a boat accident. They told us it’s “suspended” but I’d recommend to check it out before going there.

Just a boat ride away from the shores of Senegal. Great place for an afternoon picnic or getaway. Very scenic and a great place to bird watch for bird lovers.

This small volcanic island is well worth a visit, especially if you're a birder or nature enthusiast. The island is home to several breeding colonies of Great cormorants, who nest on the rocks as well as in the stunted baobabs that grow on the island. In addition there are Osprey, Northern gannet, the ubiquitous Yellow-billed kites, several shorebirds and of course the fantastic Red-billed tropicbirds, here at their only breeding site so close to the African mainland. The tropicbirds nest underneath the rocks on the steep slopes of the island and are sometimes seen foraging over sea or flying over the island. The sight of these magnificent birds is worth the trip alone.
However, it's not all sunshine. The logistics and organization of the trip by the national park office and the quality of the guide on the island were horrendous. It took 3 hours between arriving at the park office and getting into a boat - only to find out that the outboard engine did not work. After lots of waiting we finally arrived at the island at the hottest time of the day. The guide did not give any information and was only making phone calls, completely uninterested in his guiding job. At the end of the tour the boat apparently had gone back to Dakar and arrived 1.5 hrs later than what we agreed. Meanwhile the guide was sleeping.
So, yes, the birds and the nature of the island are great, but make sure to visit only when you have plenty of time (and drinking water and sunscreen)!

I have been there a couple of times, and its a great place to visit to get away from Dakar - it takes a 10 minutes boar ride to get there. It's a small uninhabited volcanic island that is clean (!) You can only go for four hours, and it usually takes 30-45 minutes to get going (they have to get a boat, find a key, buy fuel, have tea etc). But it is worth it - I advise to go to the park office on the corniche at 0845, so you can get there first and alone. The island should be the site for a Bond movie, and there is a persistent rumor that the place is a secret US base. The place is great for walks, photography and beach. You'll see why when you get there. Bring snacks, sun screen, swim wear and water shoes. Oh, some details - when you go, a ranger comes with you. Usually you just tell him you don't need anything and he'll leave you alone - he is also very happy to guide you if you wish. Explore away!
