Decent place to spend an hour and learn about life in villages of Bhutan. Not much different than Indian villages. You can buy roasted rice and traditional wine inside, albeit fairly expensive. Ticket 100/- for adults. Having a Guide to explain things will help.

There are buildings and artefacts collected from around the country. Each building shows the was it was occupied and what happened there.
There was a demonstration going on when we were there showing how local alcohol was produced. They were selling the resulting liquor in small plastic bottles very cheaply!

The National Folk Heritage Museum is located only a few minutes from Thimphu city center. This "Museum" is not your typical one (a building housing artifacts from the past). I would call this Museum a "Living History Museum", which is defined as a Museum that actually recreates historical settings of past time periods - the conditions, culture and natural environment of the past. In the case of the National Folk Heritage Museum, the Museum building itself is more than 150 years old residence and the surrounding area is a very good simulation of what life was like during that time period.

The entrance to the "Museum" or old historic home opens into a courtyard where fire wood, farming equipment and grain is stored. This courtyard also contains a stone oven for burning incense and wooden mortars for pounding rice. The Museum second floor level was used mainly for storage of grain and food items. The Museum (top) third floor level was the living, dining and sleeping areas.
Interesting to visit an actual 150 year old residence that has now been restored to become the "National Folk Heritage Museum", which the Bhutan government is wanting to preserve the old Bhutanese heritage and rural life from the past.

We went to this place for our first dinner in Bhutan and it remains one of the best Bhutanese food we've sampled! Best Chilli Cheese in Bhutan for sure!! Can't get that Chilli Cheese anywhere else in Bhutan. Must go for the food here if you're visiting Thimphu!

This museum is of recent origin and was opened from the initiative of Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. The museum is housed in a 3-story 19th century house belonging to some noble to showcase living in Bhutan about 150 years back. It is not very different from the living style some of us have witnessed up to even 50 years back in india, though it may be alien to westerners. The ground floor was used to house animals against harsh winter and the upper floors were used for accommodation as well as housing grains and other stores such as fire wood etc. The museum also showcases various rural households artifacts, equipment, objects and tools etc of every day use.

I truly enjoyed the museum. It helped to have our guide pointing out and explaining the nuances of traditional Bhutanese life.
A high point was when a lovely Bhutanese Lady accompanied by a military escort approached us with hand extended she turned out to be Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, Queen Mother of Bhutan. Accompanied by her daughter Princess Ashi Sonam Dechen Wangchuck, they both offered a warm welcome welcome to Bhutan with what we would discover is the hospitality prevalent everywhere you turn. The Queen Mother is the creator and patron of this museum, so if you go you just might get as lucky as we did.

Good collection of objects and implements which were essentials of rural life here a hundred years ago, much of which has changed little in the intervening period. Straw roof lining and wood and mud construction
Built on 3 floors you can imagine what Thimphu must have looked like in former times
Opportunity to taste some home made rice wine ( like saki) and baked rice

The Museum is definitely worth visiting. It reminded me of the various traditional items used by our people in hills, plains or even by our folks living in cities in olden days.It reminded me of basic similarities among Asian societies. I was impressed by the exhibits on display. The kitchen utensils on display reminded me of similar type of utensils used in Indian homes two generations back even in cities. The musical instruments reminded me of the life style of people in the North-East part of India. All in all,I recommend the Museum for it gives an idea of life styles of Asian Societies in this part of the Himalayas.

Most people who visit, according to our guide, go to Thimpu first, and then visit the remainder of the country. For them, this is a good place to start, with reconstructions of traditional buildings. We actually went there on the day before we left, but it was still a good experience. Lunch was home cooked on the premises (by open of the guide’s wives) and delicious.
