If you are on vacation in Hong Kong and you think of buying for yourself, or your company, a tailored suit, be aware and keep in mind a few things: firstly, have a clear picture of what you are looking for, secondly, stay at least between 10 an 14 days in Hong Kong, and thirdly compare tailors, prices, fabrics, shops to avoid the experiences we made at the ERave Custom Tailor mid November 2014. Trust your instincts!
We would like to share our tailor experience on this platform so that you might be better prepared and get the suits or dresses perfectly tailored the way you wish.
Before we went on our trip to Hong Kong we saved us some money and time to get ourselves nicely tailor made suits and shirts which would fit like a second skin on us. So we looked at different styles and fabrics and so on. We had a quite good idea of what we were looking for. On the other hand, we believed that if we choose a settled shop with a good reputation, the tailor would be experienced enough to advise and see what would fit best for us as well.
Based on internet and personal recommendation, we went to ERave Custom Tailor with the expectations of full professional service and our clear idea and pictures of the suits we wanted. We entered the shop and it appeared very professional. We told them what we are looking for and we went through the fabrics, the pictures of the suits and all the details that were important to us. We were not warm welcomed and our gut feeling already signaled that this is not the right place to get the expected service when you have no experience with the tailors guild. But because of the recommendations we thought that at the end all the gut feelings would resolve in a perfectly tailored suit. And it seemed that they understood what we wanted by commenting and giving us advises on e.g. buttons, length of sleeves, cuts, and colors. Once agreed on the suits we asked for the price, the delivery dates and the fitting appointments. What they replied was actually a key situation which should have warned us and where we should have backed off from their offer. The tailor told us he would need at least one week to deliver, however, he revised after we told him we were there only for five days. He said he could do it in five days, which he did, but with the according results. This was the second sign to leave the shop which we ignored. The third sign was at the same time was the rush with the payment of the far overpriced offer they made. The tailor rushed us with paying upfront in a offensive and rather rude way, which we thought was because of the cultural differences. Again, we did not react and hoped that the suits would turn out perfectly tailored. So we payed and were asked to come back again for the first fitting the following da in the evening.
At the first fitting day we were surprised how fast they were and the fabric and all felt good. They made some changes, took pictures and we felt cared and in better hands than before. We told them at the fitting that the sleeves and trousers were too short, but they said it would perfectly fit once it is completed. We trusted them.
The next day we been told we can pick up our 5 shirts. We went there and we said again that the sleeves were a bit too short but they did not accept and told us they were absolutely fine. Again, we should have insisted to adjust according to our wishes but they talked us away from that and we were just not assertive enough. When they told us that we should come on our last vacation day in Hong Kong to pick up the suits we knew that we would not be able to request any further adjustments and on that day it is going to be "what you see, is what you get".
As you already can imagine, "what can happen, will happen". So we went to the tailor for the last time and we were sent right away out of the shop to linger for half-hour in the mall. Apparently there was a more important customer in the shop already dragging all tailors concentration to him, even though we had an appointment. After lingering we went back to the shop and there was not much of an excuse or any other offering to smooth our ruffled feather. The "more important customer" was still in the shop and sill had a lot of attention while we were asked to try on their too short, sloping and slightly wrinkled master pieces (just being sarcastic) in the very tiny storeroom-turned-fitting room. They did not cut the trousers slim as we wanted and overall they were not fitting the way we were expecting at all. Here we were now with our second class looking very expensive tailor made suits knowing that we neither have time to ask them to fix this mess nor to complain and to ask for our money back. (We added some pics so that you can judge yourself.) And the last sign was that we were sent out of the shop with such a rush that we understood that they know about their mistakes, very rough and thievish behavior. They told us we could ship them the suits for any required adjustments, but we witnessed how they ignored email requests from other customers form abroad.
This was an expensive lesson. We hope you excuse the long text and consider our experience in case you think about buying a tailor-made dress in Hong Kong.
