My daughter and I took the old trade route three day tour (SA303) from Chiang Mai to Maekok river resort. The resort was lovely, the gardens superb and restaurant great and staff even better.
Our tour started with a trip to elephant park. We were the only ones there, the elephant guide was sullen and did not appear friendly. When we started off he lit a cigarette and told the elephant off and used his hook many times, he then got off and took our camera and used a slingshot with stones to get the elephant to move.
We stopped off at a tiger place and paid for our meal (I thought this was inclusive and only needed to pay for tea). Lunch was nice. Queen botanical gardens which was fine rushed through but this was ok as we have similar plants where we live.
Hill tribe villages which was good then the resort - nice room but found out breakfast not included either, I wondered what value for money for large amount we paid for this tour and the confusion regarding the meals was sorted by the owner after I voiced my concerns which was good. Next day hike, the start was fine, walk through the village then up a fair amount of steps then a rough track up the hills hanging onto tree roots, then nothing to hang onto - did not like that bit, the rest of the walk was fine. Wat thaton temple was good. Next was raft ride which our guide said was for six hours we decided that we may get a little bored and requested a shorter time which was about an hour. Raft ride was enjoyable any longer and would gave been tiresome. Off to the weaving ladies then back to resort.
Next day free Time then trip back to Chiang Mai. Scenery great. Stopped at the snake farm which I didn't like as very crass and living conditions for animals I thought were poor. Orchid farm next stop which was nice.
I enjoyed most of this but no value for money. The guide we had was awful he did not converse well and feel he put a dampener on our tour.
