I became a fan of Vietnamese coffee- especially from beans grown in the Central Highlands over my many trips to the country. The country has its own cafe culture too, all offered up with crispy baguettes you'll find on every street corner.

The large majority of local production is done by small households and state owned companies produce around 15% on larger farms. Production is centered around Buon Ma Thuot, Dak Lak province, in the Central Highlands.

Vietnam has over 150 years of coffee heritage, and Vietnam drinkers have made coffee a key part of their social culture. Sitting around catching up while the strong, rich brew percolates through the ‘phin’ (filter), the only choice to make is whether to add ice, condensed milk or both.

Be sure to try iced coffee (milk is optional), and the thick hot version prepared with sweet, condensed milk. I did not attempt to drink the weasel coffee. Reason? The beans are first passed through the stomachs of weasels.

My recent journey to Vietnam involved a 12 day motorbike tour from Nah Trang to Hanoi mostly along the Ho Chi Minh Trail through the Highlands. We met with our tour guide Nam at Cam Ranh airport after an early flight from Saigon that morning. On to Nah Trang for breakfast and the we fired up our bikes (Lifan 150cc Cruisers) to start our trip onto Buon Ma Thout, Kon Tum, Dak To, Kham Duc and Hoi An for a rest stop. Throughout the entire journey we were met and greeted by everyone with a warm smile and simple hello, xing chau, the freindliness of everyone was amazing.
Recently opened to western tourists the Central Highlands is mostly a farming area for Coffee, pepper, timber and rubber. On this trip we met many of the local people and tribes, stopping to take in the magnificent scenery, visit to local farms, cross ricketty suspension bridges, smoke tobacco with 105 year olds, drink beer (mot, hai, ba) at a roadside wedding, listen to a young boy play his bamboo T’rung (xylophone) that his grandfather had taught him, stand in the belly of wartime tanks proudly displayed as a testament to Vietnamese unity, pose for many photos with our new friiends, sit and enjoy many a good cafe sua da and taste much of the fresh foods of viet cooking.
I encourage every traveller to visit this wonderful country and do your part to help these people when you can, their smile is all the reward you will need.

Excellent trip organized by Mr. Huynh company Vietnam Highlands (previously worked for Kontum Tourist as mentioned in Lonely Planet book but now started his own company)
His two guides, two lovely girls with very good english and terrific knowledge of the local tribes, people and customs. and you can visit local orphanages or buy food and give it to poor families at the tribal villages.

We chose over night trip, staying with the tribal family (Bahar people), visited market, cooked food, played with the kids and done half day trekking followed by boat trip down the river.
It was just my sis and I plus 2 guides and it was my best experience from Vietnam so far.
Highly recommend to do it.
