Sorry but I don’t have a lot of things to say about this day trip. After a two hour bus ride from our hotel in Hanoi we then boarded a small “man powered” boat for the one hour row up the river. The scenery is okay but nothing special, once we arrived at the dock it looked derelict don’t think we saw another tourist all day, it was dirty and dull. We walked up the hill to some old relics and a pagoda then stopped for some lunch at the only food option available, we had paid for a set menu lunch which was five courses and ended up making my husband and daughter sick the next day, there was even a creepy tank in the restaurant with dead animals in it which was supposed to be fermented wine which has medicinal powers - gross! We kept walking up to the cable car past all the closed derelict looking stalls then took the 10 minute trip up to the perfume pergola, some great views on a beautiful day, walk down the staircase which reminded me of the Indiana Jones movies, was OK but not earth shattering. Took some photos & Walked back to the cable car for our return trip, the cable car doesn’t run all the time so we had to wait for them to turn it back on to get back to the river for our hour boat ride back to the bus, she also told us how much tip she wanted & wasn’t very happy with what we offered - just happy we made it back. If we didn’t have our own guide I don’t think we would have been comfortable going up there. Wouldn’t go there or recommend

Saw a lot of negative reviews, but my experience was much better (probably because of low expectations).
First, keep in mind this is not as popular as tam coc, so the quality of things are lower (closer to local standard, poverty status) instead of tourist / western standard. Example: I see signs of 5k breakfasts, compared to an easily 30k breakfast in old quarter, Hanoi.
Our guide English was not good, and the introductions are rehearsed. When asked a question, he gives mostly blank look and move on without acknowledgment (which offended some of the westerners in my group). The tour itself was beautiful. Tranquil boat ride, beautiful pagoda, and beautiful cave. The trip is physically demanding; keep in mind this is a holy place that Buddhist make the journey to here. Part of the pilgrimage is about suffering / hardship, which we all got a small dose of with the steep steps (despite the cable cars).
I would only recommend this to people that love exploring and understanding local culture / poverty, physically capable of climbing steep stairs (about 1000 steps, 10 minutes), and accept the fact that all the locals will try to scam you / get money from you... (an unfortunate side product of poverty and the fact we earn 10 to 20 times more). Remember vietnam median income is $150 / month.

The whole view seen on a boat was such a amazing natural sightseeing. The pagodas were dirty and old because they haven’t been well taken care.
However, the rest was AWFUL. I saw many local people playing cards to make money INSIDE A PAGODA 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 There are also so many ínects.
Be careful to be scammed, even if you’re either Vietnamese or foreigners.
Please never recommend this Chùa Hương (Pefume Pagoda) for any of your friends or guests ☹️☹️☹️. The price guaranteed by the government was totally FAKE and you’ll be begged or even threatened and harrassed to pay TIPS.

Interesting arrival by boat, and then tram to the cave temples at the top of the mountain. Huge numbers of religious believers at certain times, and left derelict for the rest of the year. The entire tour is one rip off after another. We were our guide's first tour group, and the scamsters devoured her!

We went to the 2 pagodas, one inside the cave (I honestly forgot the names please forgive me) which we went by cable car, and the other one which was the nearest to our hike.
The weather was extremely hot, but I imagine it wouldn’t be as great either with colder temperature.
The hike was alright, it was incredibly tiring. The food was terrible, but maybe its because we weren’t used to the culture. Overall, the cave looked great, but my parents didn’t enjoy the experience. It was too bland, I guess. Unless you really love temples and caves, I don’t think you’d enjoy this very much.

The only positives I can point out on this trip was seeing the cave and the mountain landscape when on the boat and cable car.
I don’t feel that what I paid for was what I got. The tour left an hour late (wrong address provided by a person on the tour, which can’t be helped I guess), the guide spoke English, but it was very broken and he didn’t provide much information throughout the tour. When questions were asked, he struggled to provide an answer that made sense.
The additional fees were the biggest shock. We were told that if we wanted to avoid the walk the cable car was additional cost, we were also told that we would need to pay to use the toilet, even though when we went for lunch 5mins later the toilets were free. We also had to tip the boat driver. Which I was confused about considering the money we paid at the start was to pay for a boat then by the time everyone tipped him, he would have got a lot more than I would have expected.
The lunch that was provided wasn’t bad, it was better than I had anticipated.
Don’t go on the weekend, apparently it’s just full of locals that have days off. We went on a Friday which wasn’t bad but it was still packed full of people. You are constantly hassled by shop owners to buy something every minute.
All in all, nice to see, wouldn’t do it again.

The scenery from the boat ride was nice and the caves were cool.... but everything else was annoying. People tell you to buy things nonstop... birds, toys, food, etc. You need to pay to use the toilets and the workers try to give you food instead of your change. The lady that rowed our boat demanded more tip. The guide told her no but she kept demanding it.
This place is a two hour bus ride from Hanoi and about an hour boat ride into the area. Then a 30 minute walk to the cable car that doesn't operate as often when it's not peak season. We waited around a long time to get up. If you don't get to see it, you're not missing out on much.

We've done the Perfume Pagoda tour as a private tour with 2 couples. It starts with a 1-1.5h ride from Hanoi and then a boat trip along the river that takes another hour. Viewing during the boat trip was nice but didn't really match with the pictures that were advertised before. Also, it's unfortunate that at the river sides there are billboards with advertising.
Would recommend taking the cable cart to the pagoda as the walking path is just one long trail with shops. The Pagoda itself is a wonderful cave, worthwhile descending.
All in all a nice day trip but the Ha Long Bay trip was more impressive in terms of landscape, viewing and overall experience.

This was one tour that I was very excited about going into my trip to Vietnam. We did this our second day there (on a Sunday), thinking it would be a good time to go. I didn't realize there was a festival that day, since it was right after Tet (the lunar New Year), and basically everyone in the surrounding villages in Northern Vietnam would be going to Perfume Pagoda also.
The positive part of this tour, 1) great cultural experience and 2) the beautiful, relaxing boat ride out to the pagodas.
The downside:
- There were SO MANY PEOPLE HERE. Like, thousands upon thousands. We couldn't even move at times for a good while because there were so many people. We ended up hiking up/waiting for 2.5 hours before we decided to get out of line and take the cable car back down without seeing the pagoda at the top because it was so miserable standing in the crowd. I wish there had been some warning for visitors before booking during the time.
- Lots and lots of steps. We didn't get the full experience since it was slow moving and we only had breaks in the crowd here and there, but it was a little more intense than I expected, and I do hike quite often.
Overall, I think this would have been cool if not for all of the people. We ended up taking the cable car down the mountain and ended up with an incredible view where it drops you. So, that was a highlight. Basically, just don't go on a weekend between February and April.

It was a few hours in a bus but I really enjoyed going here - the boat ride was lovely amongst the limestone karsts and the pagodas are so cool - a pagoda in a cave in the middle of nowhere is something that has to be seen to be believed. A weird experience but a great insight into Vietnamese culture. The weird little plastic babies that people put in there to get good luck for having a baby makes it even weirder/better. I suggest walking up and then getting the cable car down, it's only 60,000vnd or something but it gives you great views of the mountains that the walk up doesn't.

we need suggestions for a tour company in Hanoi for a day trip to the Perfume Pagoda
