The fruits, vegetables, local produce and more are colourful. It is best to find out the prices before buying. We bought some overpriced lychees which are much cheaper in large supermarkets. Go for the sake of soaking in the atmosphere but do remember to bargain.

Dong Ba is on the tourist must-do list for Hue, but I would offer the following caveat. Most of the markets you'll see on the tourist route in SE Asia actually cater to tourists. They're relatively clean, with ample space, and most of what's sold will fit in your suitcase. Dong Ba is huge, interesting, but, in my view, it is a real market, not much tourist-oriented. This is where residents shop in Hue, unless they are affluent. Space is a bit cramped, it's a bit dark in some places, and the tourist can be assailed by an assortment of touts and louts who apparently will get a commission on anything you buy--if they can convince the merchant they guided you to his/her stall. The array of contents was fascinating, but we felt an hour was plenty. Too much intensity from all directions. I rate it "very good" for those who can handle this sort of thing.

Do not visit Dong Ba Market, especially if you are a woman traveling alone. I made the mistake of walking into the place and meeting a man who said he had a shop with high quality shirts. After I told him I was not interested in shirts, he blocked my path, violated my space, pushed me and threatened me. None of the other vendors did anything. I was the only foreigner there.
I was terrified and saw no other way out but to comply with his demands since I was concerned for my safety.
He harassed me, verbally and physically threatened me and would not allow me to leave until I bought 4 shirts for double the price. I later discarded the shirts.
The market is overcrowded with merchandise and has very narrow one lane dirt rows which merchants can utilize to block visitors on both sides.
The large market has no security and no wifi, so smartphones are useless. The place is dark and so compacted with goods that it looks like a fire hazard. There are no water sprinklers or fire extinguishers.
I am writing this so no other woman experiences the same treatment I endured.

We came here for breakfast and to have a peek around. This place is designed for locals so you can definitely pick up some cheap and tasty eats. The market ranges from raw foods to t-shirts and usual stuff you find at tourist markets.
You will need to haggle if you want to buy any tourist stuff.
The cooked food is on the outer rims of the markets and look for where there are locals gathered around. You won't find many people speaking English.

Our Cyclo Tour was arranged for us through Gate 1 Tours. Our group departed from our hotel "Eldora", located on the opposing bank of the Perfume River. We were driven across the famous Troung Tien Bridge, designed by Gustave Eiffel, and completed in 1899 by the French Colonial Government. Dong Ba Market is the largest commercial center in Hue. There is a two story enclosed market which we did not visit, but rather drove through the outside produce, poultry and fish market, lining both sides of the street along the Perfume River. With so many shoppers in attendance, we were at a standstill on several occasions. Attractive displays of colorful fruits and vegetables are offered for sale by vendors and hard-working families. An interesting experience witnessing the shopping lifestyle of the Hue citizens.

I loved visiting this market it sells everything you could possibly want or need. Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables plus meat and fish. I loved visiting the clothing stalls where a bought a most attractive silk and cotton top which I am very pleased with and it has washed up very well. It was very reasonably priced and you pay in US$ but you do need to haggle. Keep a very close hold on your handbag or wallet as this place is very crowded and you could easily lose it.

If you ready to have ,,shocking,, experience then You need to go there for sure!
We didnt buy anything from there , It stinks, it very dirty and noisy- but its worth it. It is still Vietnamese culture.

An authentic Vietnamese market, making this an unique experience for the traveler, but most certainly not catered to the tourist.
The downside of this experience was twofold, the unsafe use of moving dollies to shift product around as an old woman walked into me with the handle, luckily for me it missed my phone in my front pocket and instead collided with my hip. Coupled with the unsanitary conditions where raw poultry was located, spilling juices onto the floor.
There was nothing of value that I would seek out to purchase, as the market is catered to locals, however I did end up buying a t-shirt here, just as a reminder of my time in Hue.

Hi all,
I spend most of my time in Vietnam and know it as well as my own back yard in Aus, but not so sure about what's involved with travel in China.
Here goes the dumb question and hope there is someone out there, stop laughing, ok a little bit, that might be able to help or even travel with me.
Q: Can I go directly to the 3 Gorges Dam, fly or however, pick up a small boat, motor or not and make my way down the river to Shanghai stopping where ever I please?
My time is my own so I am not on a timetable at all.
Then from Shanghai back to Vietnam. HCMC.
I would appreciate any info on this "are you mad" idea of mine, lol.
Thank you and happy travels to all.
