Очень понравился этот район. Довольно современный, красивая архитектура. Природа, много различных скульптур.

This is an older area of the city with many historic and old buildings. Cargills Department store being one. Look up at the different trade names as you walk a along the collonade. Plan a route round the fort to catch all the places. We used Eyewitness Travels guide to Sri Lanka.

Having coming through the Colombo Fort railway station, you step out into a scene of hundreds of shops similar to massive market. the whole area is chaotic with cars, buses, tuk-tuk's & people fighting for the same spaces. Remarkable and must be seen to be believed. Some remarkable architecture & a lot of history to enjoy too.

Beautiful piece of history and kept in keeping with the time. Quaint with some beautiful shops and eateries, especially the gelato parlour.

The Colombo Fort area has lots of historical buildings and museums. One that seems not often mentioned is the Colombo Port Maritime Museum. It is located on 19 Chaithya Road, Colombo and shares the same grounds as Sambodhi Chaithya monument and is also just down the road from Colombo lighthouse.

The museum is housed in an old dutch building and has a range of model ships and paintings of important people who have visited the country over the years. There was also a good discussion of the trade links from the early days and fits well with the story told by the Museum of Economic History.

There is a steam engine and crain on display outfront together with some cannon.

There was no admission charge when we visited

Please note that this has nothing to do with the museum in Galle.

Even though refurbishing is required in this area, it is still worth taking the time to visit. It is centrally placed, so you should not have too far to walk (or take a tuc-tuc). Plenty of good views. There is a shopping precinct there as well, so you should be able to find some nice things to take home.

친구들과 걸으며 산책하기 너무 좋은 장소였습니다. 콜롬보 해안의 인도양 파도는 태평양이나 대서양보다 무척 출렁이는 것 같아요. 콜롬보는 파도가 매력적입니다.

Sri Lanka Diaries
The final page
Like all other stories this also has an end ; an happy end where grandmas used to say ,” jaisi unke saath beeti , vaisi sab ke saath beetey “( as happy endnof the story may all stories end on happy notes) .
Our short and sweet journey also took a final turn and we the four couples started descending to Colombo. The first halt was a big temple ( around thirty minutes on the way from Bentota. A big “ Budha” statue reminding us of a similar one at Bodh Gaya and a temple of Vishnu ji inside were the highlights of the temple. A Gajraj outside reminded us of glimpses of elephant orphanage seen at the start of the tour.
The journey through the express ways of Sri Lanka has big cities on the way and smaller towns all along. The skyline changed imperceptibly and soon we were in the capital city of Colombo.
Like any capital city , it has official bungalows , remenants of history and making of history ( recent bomb blast , a port being constructed by Chinese who purchased it ,as Lanka could not repay the loans ) , big convention centers , gardens etcetra.
The highlight of Colombo stay was the hotel “ Fairway Colombo” . The hotel is a “no string hotel “, you will not find extra things , (no driers , combs , shaving kits , sewing kits, tooth brushes and paste , weighing machines ,iron , shower caps , moisturizer, creams etcetra ) and is situated at a happening place.
It is bang opposite old “ Dutch Hospital “.
The Dutch hospital is no more a hospital and has been converted into a shopping plaza. Those living in Amritsar can co relate it with
V. J. Hospital ( later named Sri Guru Teg Bahadur hospital) converted into a shopping bazar. The comparison however stood there. The Dutch hospital is a much better conversion. The star attraction is “ Ministry of Crab” a five star eating joint, souvenir shop , bear bars , Gems shop and to top it all the original structure has been retained.
Although, the final dinner ,at an Indian restaurant “ Flower Drum “ ,was a flop show , yet the company compensated and the laughter on the faux pas of a make member entering a ladies toilet was like a cherry on a bad cake.
If asked to summarize, I would say ,”It may not be one of the best places visited so far , but doesn’t have many minuses too.
The plus points were cost , company and culinary habits.
Scenic beauty , shoppers ( ladies specially) paradise ( pearls and gems ) , Sita mata history is added charm.
Miserly spending on lunches , missing the traveling spirit of younger age and missing the straight flights were the only minuses. Overall , we had a relaxed , fun filled , exploring yatra. One can give it three out of five stars.
Rakesh ,a happy traveler , Bharti.

Fort area is in disrepair. Fort is very much the same when I left 32 years ago. The pavements are in shocking condition. The GPO has been abandoned. Please restore the beautiful GPO as this is a heritage building. All the old heritage buildings except the President's House are in derelict condition. Why, oh why?
