The church, built to house the Bulgarian minority of the city, is characterized by the fact that it is the only one in the world to have a cast iron supporting structure. Also interesting is the iconostasis.

You read, you watch pictures and you can't replace what you see with your own eyes. A very fancy, slim and light church. Some dissonance from the realization that the material of the walls is cast iron, and the weight of 500 tons and such air. The church is relatively young. In 1890, the Sultan gave permission for construction. Interestingly, the domes, iconostasis and bells were made in Russia. Istanbul in general, and Fanar in particular, is very connected to Russia, which has often and at key moments helped and very significantly.
Lucky they came in the morning, there was practically no one, already on the exit came several buses with tourists...
Quite nice to sit. rest before rushing to Balata and Fanara streets in the temple courtyard. There are benches in a circle. There is a toilet, entrance by Istanbulkart.
Very pleasant atmosphere to visit.

When you look up from the old streets of Balat, you will never expect to encounter such a church. More than the interior of the church, the garden arrangement is also wonderful. Entrance is free, but the souvenir section inside is worth checking out.

The Church with Many Names
Except for its gilded wooden iconostasis, this beautiful 19-century church that borders the Golden Horn is made entirely of prefabricated iron material. Hence, its sobriquet ‘the Iron Church’.
Easy to access via Tram 5 (Eminönü - Alibeyköy). Get off at Balat stop, cross the highway, and head toward the clearly visible church.
Known as St. Stephen’s Orthodox Church, Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Stephen Bulgarian Church, and Iron Church.

We had it marked in the points to see but we had not paid enough attention to it before going so it surprised us for the better! It is a small church, they keep it in perfect condition and its interiors encouraged me to say that they are the most beautiful I have seen in an Orthodox church. Due to its location, it is perfect to visit along with the Balat neighborhood and its colorful houses.

Bulgarian church is a beautiful and serene church that we came upon by chance. We were on our way back from Balat, towards the metro line.

It is an orthodox church built by the Bulgarians. It is a very beautiful church. Its decorations were very beautiful. It is one of the 3 iron churches that remain intact in the world. It was previously in a neglected state. It was recently restored. A small candle is 15 TL, a large candle is 40 TL

Beautiful church that is well worth the visit if only to emphasize the contract between interior decorations of mosques and Christian churches. The typical of Orthodox faith iconostas is gorgeous.

My personal assets include hundreds of religious buildings in different localities in a couple of dozen countries. Different sizes and consecrations, different architectural styles, wooden and stone... But a visit to Istanbul replenished my personal “piggy bank” of sacred places with a temple that has no analogues anywhere else in the world.
And all because he is IRON!!! Can you imagine this - a church made of METAL? So I couldn’t until I met the Bulgarian Church of St. Stephen (Aya Stefan Bulgar Kilisesi). I was very lucky - from the place of my Istanbul deployment to the mentioned temple it was only about seven minutes on foot!!!
From my house I went out in the direction of the Golden Horn Bay onto Mürselpaşa Street, along which I moved in a southerly direction and went straight to the main facade of the temple. Honestly, from a distance, St. Stephen's Church seems like an ordinary religious building - beautiful, photogenic, elegant, memorable... But ORDINARY...
However, this “ordinariness” immediately disappears as soon as you find out what this sacred place is made of!!!
Today, this is the only church in the world made entirely of metal, and owned by Orthodox Christians. It is precisely because of the unusual material used that this temple has another popular name: “Iron Church” (Demir Kilise).
I will not allow myself to retell the Net information about the history of the sacral (the growth of the national self-awareness of the Bulgarians, subordinate to the Greek Patriarch of Constantinople; the revival of the Bulgarian Church, abolished in 1393; the appearance of the Bulgarians’ own very modest wooden temple in 1849; the separation of the Bulgarians from the Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1860 ; recognition of the Bulgarian Exarchate through the firman issued by the Ottoman Sultan Abdulaziz in 1870; the fire and death in the fire of the mentioned church), and I will go straight to the essence of my modest story - the IRON (or, still, cast iron?) church.
To be honest, before writing this post I had no idea that iron was such a popular building material at the end of the 19th century. Although, if you remember the history of architecture of those times, the creations of Gustave Eiffel, John Roebling, Joseph Paxton, Auguste Montferrand, Vladimir Shukhov, etc. immediately come to mind. The competition for the construction of a new Bulgarian church in Istanbul was won by the design of Hovsep Aznavour, an Ottoman Armenian architect.
The latter proposed a very interesting option: to make the main frame of the future temple from cast iron, and then cover it with metal shields, which were secured to the base in a variety of ways (bolts and nuts, metal welding, rivets). I would like to say right away: Mr. Aznavour was not a “pioneer” in the matter of metal religious buildings - after the invention of corrugated iron in 1829, the British “riveted” prefabricated portable iron churches to send to their remote colonies, and Gustave Eiffel once again designed the same prefabricated iron churches that were sent to the Philippines and Peru.
After the Austrian company produced prefabricated elements of the temple (they were cast for three whole years - from 1893 to 1896!!!), the latter were delivered to Istanbul and the unusual LEGO construction began to boil!!! Already on September 8, 1898, Exarch of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church Joseph I consecrated the erected temple.
If we talk about the architecture of the sacral, then before us, in my humble opinion, is an interesting, original and unique mix of neo-Gothic, neo-Byzantine and neo-Baroque styles. The three-nave basilica, cruciform in plan, rises on the shore of the Golden Horn Bay (the apsidar part faces the latter). On the opposite side there is a vestibule, above which rises a 40-meter beautiful bell tower.
Unfortunately, I was not able to look inside the temple, but I read that the interior of the sacral represents the first experience of using the Art Nouveau style in the history of Istanbul architecture). The Bulgarian Church of St. Stephen in the Balat district of Istanbul looks amazingly beautiful and photogenic not only from the earth’s surface - during a boat trip along the Golden Horn, I also got some pretty good photos. Highly recommend!!!

This is an impressive big church in the Balat area of Istanbul. It sits neatly by the water (Golden Horn) and is worth a stroll by if you are in the area.
