It is currently only possible to visit the fortress from it's exterior or you can pay £1.30 to go into it's small garden which I was told by the actual ticket seller that it wasn't worth it as there's nothing there. You can get some decent photos of it from the adjacent promenade along the Bosphorus Sea but there's a lot of restoration work currently being done that is going to last for 2 years. You can see the large circular towers and perimeter walls and turrets from the promenade but there's also a lot of it that's covered up or has scaffolding around it.

Fatih Sultan Mehmet had this fortress built to conquer Istanbul. It was an important step in history.
He succeeded.
A good mind. He showed how smart he was. He protected the Bosphorus. He controlled the shipments coming to Istanbul.
It still maintains its magnificence for centuries. Today it stands on the Bosphorus like a monument and a symbol.

Very beautiful city to visit. The views are nice, the food is great, a lot of selections, the people are so nice, and very rich in historical places that extended to more than five hundred years.
The whole family enjoyed it too much

Unfortunately not all of it was accessible to the public, but the scenery compensated me as I walked everywhere and took lovely pictures. It is a historic fortress, which was built in that particular spot in order to stop the ships supply for the people of Constantinople, thus conquer the city more easily.

IT'S A RIP OFF! Before we went to the Rumelifortress, we read that it was "partially closed," but we still thought there would be enough to see of the fortress. But when we got there after a 90 minute journey (it's about 16 kilometres from the centre of Istanbul) we found that, even though the ticket booth was open and still charging people to enter, that after making our way up the treacherous "footpath," we saw that the fortress was closed for renewal. We basically paid to go up the "footpath," to find that the fortress was closed.

As per the previous review - poor signage, difficult to find the entrance, no access to the towers or fortifications due to a long, extensive restoration project. It looks spectacular but once we eventually found the entrance and gained access (to the lower garden only) it was very much a work site - and will be for at least two more years. Once completed it will no doubt be a brilliant place to visit but ...
Nothing of this is mentioned on the website. We were very much looking forward to the visit but left very very disappointed.

Not easy to find the entrance, from the main road that runs along the Bosporous, look for a gap in the yellow fence and walk through. It does look like an off limits building site but head up the steps and through the arch way. You can walk round the site but cannot go on the walls or in the towers as they are being restored. There are information boards to explain things. No coffee shop or gift shop, but great views.

I visited it on April 16, 2024, but it was closed due to restoration and maintenance work, but it is possible to wander underneath the fort on the shores of the Bosphorus.

This imposing fortress is on the European side of the Bosphorus. It can be seen from the boat when taking the tour of the Bosphorus. You can also visit its interior and tour it.

Hi, I see you visited Rumeli Fortress last year. We’re visiting in early May and I am keen to also visit. Did you do a tour or just get there yourself, and do you recall the details? It would be great to arrive by ferry but keen for any details as I’ve yet to find any tour company that visits Rumeli as opposed sail by. Many thanks.

I did not do a tour. I took DT1 bus from the Taksim Square to the Mimar Sinan University, and then rode either bus # 22 or 40 to the Rumelihisari stop. (Google might direct you to ride to the Asiyan bus stop, but it is a farther walk to the Fortress entrance. (Pro tip: if you suffer from motion sickness, take some pill before, since the route is extremely winding).
Problem with the Rumeli fortress is that it is under construction and you can only access limited area. Probably best to check their website (if it has one) or see more recent reviews as to whether the renovation is over.
Not sure about ferry, if the renovation work is not over by May, there might be no ferries taking tourists there. The site is quiet away from the main attravtions, so there might be no tours there.

How to go to rumeli fortress from Istanbul ?
Is this place near anadolu kavagi ??
Skrevet 11. august 2016
You can take one of many buses near the funicular station at the bottom of the hill from Taksim Square. We did. As you ride, the upcoming stations display above the driver to show you when you are getting close. The ride north during average traffic took us about 20 minutes I believe. The bus drops you a pretty short distance from Rumelihisari.

What are the things we can see at present inside Rumeli Fortress Museum and the towers ?
Skrevet 14. oktober 2015
I had about 40 minutes at the fortress as part of a Bosphorus tour, and was only able to walk around the walls and climb to a highpoint to see the view over the water. The layout of the fortress is easy to follow and is intact and also quite compact. Had no time to see anything further but was impressed with the site.

There is not a significant museum inside or around the museum. Actually, the fortress itself is not renovated, old ancient high stairs to the top,one of the spectecular Boshporus view that you will not regret. You should include fortress sightseeing to your breakfast or tea break, around the cafes that local mostly prefer and start from Bebek walk to the fortress have breakfast , tea . Weekends the area is very crowded.

From taksim square how do you get to Rumeli fortress
Skrevet 1. juni 2015
Take funicular to Kabatas. When you get outside of the station on the Kabatas you will see bus terminal. Take bus to the Sarıyer district of Istanbul (it will show on the bus Sariyer as one of the bus stops). Depending on the time of the day you are going to visit Fortress it might take up to 20+ minutes to get there. Once you see second bridge on Bosporus (Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge) it is time to get off the bus. Fee to visit fortress is 10 Turkish Liras. I highly recommend visiting it. It is beautiful and worth seeing.
