This military museum (Askerî Müze ve Kültür Sitesi Komutanlığı) is not really a museum, or rather not just a museum. It is located in the military department, so at the entrance there is a checkpoint with a metal detector, where inspection is carried out by active military personnel. In addition, there is a military unit nearby, almost right next to it. The territory is large, on it you can see real tanks and guns of the First World War, as well as planes and helicopters. Once inside you will have to pay, since the exhibits inside are already paid for, in addition, this price includes a concert of a military orchestra. They wrote that from time to time some of the halls are closed, but we were lucky - everything worked, everything was open. There was a lot of all kinds of ammunition, military clothing, some of them with traces of blood from real wounded soldiers during the First World War. The exhibits on display cover the period of the Middle Ages until the beginning of the 20th century. And like the icing on the cake - a concert in the Janissary style. Very colorful. and at the end you can take a free photo with your fellow Janissaries))

The Military Museum and Cultural Site Command located in Harbiye, Istanbul, is affiliated with the General Staff, Military History and Strategic Studies Directorate. The Military Museum, which is one of the leading museums in the world in terms of the richness and diversity of its collections, dates back to the 15th century. After the Conquest of Istanbul in 1453, Hagia Irene Church was organized as a "Cebehane" where valuable harp weapons, tools and equipment were collected. In 1726, all the methods in Cebehane were organized and a new establishment was established under the name of "Dar-ül Esliha". The foundation of modern museology was laid in 1846 with the efforts of Tophane Marshal Damat Ahmet Fethi Pasha, and this date marked the first real establishment of Turkish Museology and the Military Museum. After Ahmet Fethi Pasha, these collections in Hagia Irene were named "Müze-i Hümayun" as a museum for the first time after a short time. After the establishment of the Museum Organization, especially as the archaeological artifacts expanded, these artifacts were moved to the Tiled Pavilion and the foundations of the Istanbul Archaeological Museum were laid. Ahmet Muhtar Pasha Enriched His Weapon Collections with Announcements and Official Correspondence. A Museum of Quality Suitable for Today's Contemporary Museology Concept has been Stored with its Library, Cinema, Shooting Range, Publications, Clothing Room and Janissary. The Military Museum, which continued its activities in Hagia Irene until 1940, is pausing its activities for a while due to the thoughts that the Second World War may spread to Turkey. After the Possibility of War was Eliminated, the Artifacts Stored in the Maçka Armory in 1949 began to be exhibited again in the Military Academy Gymnasium Building as of 1959. Since this system was insufficient for the Military Museum Collections and allowed steps towards development at a contemporary level, it was decided to use the Old War Building, whose restoration work had been carried out since 1966, as a Military Museum, and it was opened to visitors with a new arrangement on February 10, 1993.

I would not have thought I would enjoy a military museum as much as I did, but this is something I consider a must see if you're in the city for as much as a week and can make the time. While one has to overlook much of the glorifying rhetoric of museum label text, there truly is a lot to learn about Ottoman and Turkish history, and there are so many fascinating original objects on display. Everything from the history of stirrups to the history of marching bands is addressed and even this pacifist found it all illuminating, One thing that should not be missed in the military band performance (I think this is daily at 3 pm). We barely got there in time for it (the performance space is pretty buried in this vast structure so don't show up at the entrance right before start time!), but I am so glad we caught it. The music, uniforms and the entire performance is like something from another world.

Dark, eerily empty of visitors. I'd been to the museum before, back in the 90s. It had been fascinating: luxurious Ottoman commanders tents; artifacts of war dating from the entire history of humanity in Anatolya, and the Janissary band playing in the garden courtyard.

Now, the rooms with commanders tents are "closed...have always been closed", the Janissaries much larger band plays in a largely empty auditorium and the exhibits are pared way back with the only deep dives being about Ataturk.

A very in depth museum of Turkish military history. This facility contains everything from swords and spears to canon and machine guns. A primer on Turkish history would be helpful to put all of the conflicts in context.

Charge crazy 200 lira (10 eur) for the military museum which are always empty and in most countries are either free of charge or very cheap.
But, that's not all!
I paid 400 lira for 2 tickets and already inside found that most interesting 50% of exhibition about the WWI and the War for independence is closed.
Not recommend, modern paintings and European swords and armor you can see in other museums

Come da titolo interessantissimo museo sulla storia militare della Turchia, dai tempi di attila, il flagello di dio alla Turchia contemporanea passando per l’era bizantina e ottomana.

Museo ampio situato su due piani.

This is my second visit, which was better because there was a live performance of the Mehter military band. The museum itself is rather large with lots of exhibits from the early Ottoman period up to Korean war. The best part of our visit was the Mehter playing in a theater at the far end of the museum. The show started with a short video, and then the whole wall with the screen was opened with the Mehter band marching in from outside. Definitely worth a visit for a very small entrance fee of TRY25.

Room after room full of swords and guns wears after a while. Lack of English translations spoils many displays. The rooms on Gallipoli and the 1453 conquest of Constantinople were a bit disappointing, they could have told the stories so much better. There is a nationalistic feel about many displays - obviously targeted at the domestic audience. The 3pm concert was interesting and the museum seemed to close shortly after that. Take photos of the 2 floor plans as you will get lost! Staff don't speak much English. Don't miss the 15c bronze cannon (with granite cannonball!) outside.
