Its was an escape from the rain to be honest. Currently under restoration so not very much to explore. 7€ entrance fee for foreigners. A pleasent break from the crowded street of Istanbul.

It was interesting to see how well they could dance in sync. The performance lasted about 40 minutes, including live music. The seating was basic wooden chairs, so you would want the performance to last an hour at maximum. I appreciated the explanation for each part of the performance, which was projected onto a screen above the performers, as it helped the audience stay engaged. It's best to plan ahead and build in time to find the venue, as it's slightly hidden away from the main street.

A beautiful religious place and museum I found at the end of Istiklal Street. I saw it while walking around and wanted to go inside and see what was there. A beautiful little museum. When you go up the small stairs from the museum, you reach a large gathering area. I really liked the paintings on the ceiling.

Mevlevi Lodges, which have combined music and science for centuries, have had a great impact on Turkish culture. Many people gathered around Mevlevi lodges have been educated in many branches of fine arts and have made a name for themselves in their fields. Galata Mevlevi Lodge, located at the top of the hill leading down to Yüksekkaldırım in Beyoğlu District, is the oldest Mevlevi lodge in Istanbul. It was built in 1491 on the home farm of İskender Pasha, the Beylerbeyi of the reign of Sultan Bayezid II. The first Sheikh was Mehmed Şems-i Çelebi. Even though the Mevlevihane suffered a fire during the reign of Sultan Mustafa III, the Mevlevihane that stands today was built by the same Sultan. Later, it was repaired during the reign of Sultan Selim III and Mahmud II and continued its operations until 1925. It consists of the Mevlevi Lodge, which was renovated between 1967 and 1972 and built as a social complex, Semahane, Dervish Cells, Sheikh's Office, Hünkar Mahfili, Bacılar Section, Library, Public Sebil, Muvakkithane, Kitchen, Tombs and Treasury. There is Sultan Abdülmecid's Repair Inscription on the Entrance Door of this Wooden Section, which is used as a Semahane Museum. The building has an octagonal plan and is one of the beautiful examples of the 18th century Baroque Style. In this section, Turkish Musical Instruments and Works of Mevlevi Culture are Exhibited. In the upper part, which is separated by wooden lattices, there are, in chronological order, the divans of the Divan Poets and the manuscripts of Sheikh Galib, Ismail Ankaravi, Marijuana and Fatih Dedeler, who grew up in the Mevlevi Lodge, and the poet Leyla Hanım. Opened as a Museum in 1975, Galata Mevlevi Lodge, also known as Kulekapı Mevlevi Lodge, is one of the institutions that reflect the culture and art of its era.

Founded in 1491 by Afyon Mevlevi Lodge Sheikh Divane Mehmed Dede on land in Galata, the Mevlevi Lodge is also the first Mevlevi Lodge in Istanbul. The museum, which contains very important pieces and details about Mevleviism such as Şeyh Galip and Halet Efendi Tombs, Semahane, Mahfiller, Dervish Rooms, past instruments used in semahs and various works of art, serves as a small door opening to peace from the lively environment of Beyoğlu.

We went to this to respect culture, learn from it and appreciate a historical tradition. But they made it arduous. We're not there as scholars... we're tourists. The show says "no photogrphy, NO CLAPPING, no exiting." And the tradition is interesting for a little but it's very repetative and put several people to sleep. Yes, they actually were sleeping. The show needs a host who talks the audiance through stuff and brings dimension to this experience. But right now it's not designed to share a culture experience with tourists... but to torture them. The only reason i give 3 stars is to respect the performers who have the respect for their culture and history and honor it.

This is the first lodge of Mevlevi dervishes in Istanbul and it dates back to 15th century. Of course the building went through various renovations throughout the centuries but the essential is not the building here anyway. The museum exhibits inside give an idea of how the life of dervishes was, their rituals and objects. The room where the Sema (the whirling ceremony) takes place is spectacular. There is also a cemetery inside where the dervishes are buried.
The museum pass is valid here. Though the museum officially closes at 6:30 pm, if there are few people around, the staff closes the doors towards 6 pm which has been the case when we were there

Often overlooked in the quest for Galata Tower & Galata Bridge, the Galata Mevlevi Museum, located on Istiklal Street, just before the tower as you walk down the street (staring from Taksim) is a good option for a peek into the life & times of whirling dervishes.

I’ve read that the ticket for the Sema ceremony in the Mevlevi museum can be bought online in advance. Can you please share the website? Or if I just go ahead and buy the ticket on the day, should I expect a long line to buy it?
Thank you
Skrevet 18. oktober 2019
I just bought the ticket in person on Sunday a bit after noon for the 5 p.m. ceremony. There was no line.

Ive read from a travel book that the Whirling Devishes Dance is only during the last sunday of each month.. Is it still true or do they perform all all sundays of each month?
Skrevet 21. april 2019
They perform on most Sundays, to the best of my knowledge. But if there is a special occasion, they may not perform -- I know they didn't do so last year during Ramadan.
Note: some of the same people who perform here also may perform some nights at the daily dance at the cultural center.

Is the Whirling Dervishes performance only on Sundays at 5PM? And when do tickets become available? Will tickets be available on the day before, Saturday, to purchase?
Skrevet 14. februar 2019
Nosotros las compramos el domingo por la mañana, ya que estábamos pasando el domingo en esa parte de Estambul. Había un señor en la puerta sentado en una mesa vendiendo las entradas.

Hello, I hope I.a to travel to Istanbul for a short break of 5-6 days, with family, in September 2018. We would very much like to see the 'Sema' at the museum. Are there any confirmed dates or timetable? And can we book to attend there or in advance?
