It is one of the best known desert castles. It really has the shape of a castle but it would actually be more of an 8th century caravanserai. Quick but pleasant visit without many people.

Not much to see and not a lot is known about the site. It is thought it was a caravanserai. While named 'Qasr' (castle) the towers are solid and the slits in the walls unsuitable for arrows but useful for ventilation.
I visited as part of a tour group- one of 3 sites visited under the 'Desert Castles' label as half a day trip. The ride from Amman to the Qasr/s is flat desert and military sites with the occasional camel to spot and the 'castles' are easily spotted from the road. Each has their own point of interest.
You can explore the many rooms of the caravanserai, peek out into the desert, imagine the travellers who may have journied here, consider how different the location must have been in less arid days.
A lonely location- not something to make a special trip to on its own, but as part of a tour of similar structures it is a nice day out.

This castle is quite restored, so you can see its different rooms, with details of typical Arab architecture. We visited it as part of the desert castles route. It was a stopping place or accommodation for merchants, for example, from that time who needed to rest.

Very well preserved structure that can be visited internally, dating back to the 7th-8th century AD.
It was probably some kind of hotel/hostel for travellers.
One of the most visited of the so-called "Desert Castles" in Jordan.
However, it is not a castle, even if its shape may resemble one.

The square-plan castle is characterized by tall and narrow cylindrical towers which, being full, have a purely aesthetic function. Completely devoid of windows, it has slits that allowed light to filter through. Visiting the interior you can see drawings and graffiti from various eras on the walls.

Qasr Al-Kharraneh was the first desert castle I visited.
It is not clear for what purpose it was built. Sort of like a Crusader castle or military fort, (Alois Musil, a Czech explorer and orientalist, visited the site a couple of times during 19 hundred century and was convinced a military stronghold that the building was used as a fortress), agricultural outpost and resting place for caravan travelers.
New considerations are that the building was that local Bedouin leaders met there.
The facades were intact with decorative courses of flat stones, one might say, not destroyed. It was built during the Umayyad dynasty. Inside there was a courtyard, different rooms and stairs. It was quite big and had 2 floors. Fantastic view from above.
But, it was a big shame, because there on the left side, about maybe 500 meters only it was a power station, which was terrible and I not only understand, why they built it so near this castle.
P.S. I have been there already in August 2016 but never wrote some review, so I better me now.
