The Muscat Corniche is 3 km long. It follows the seaside from the fishmarket at Mutrah to a bit beyond Al Riyam park in the direction of Old Muscat. A highway is located right parallel to it, but does not disrupt quiet and peace too much, as most of the way the space is quite wide.
The most interesting part of the Corniche is at Mutrah, as there are some historic buildings near the souk and generally this area is more lively with a view on the port basin with different kind of boats. Old forts can also be seen on the landside.
Great for a walk especially during winter.

Nice corniche with clear waters. You can see sharks and turtles across from the Souq. Nice place for a walk or a jog if you are in the area.

Walking along the Corniche in Muscat was a great experience for my husband and me. We visited it at least twice.
We walked the complete stretch, starting from the Fish Market, right up to the Al Alam Palace. It was a very, very long stretch, I agree, but worth our effort. And of course, we took breaks on the way.
The Corniche is the sea front of the port city of Muscat. The water is a lovely blue, there's sea gulls galore, there were people (illegally) fishing, there were cruiseliners, fishing boats as well the traditional Omani dhow boats visible in the clear distance.
The corniche was always full of hustle-bustle. The wide footpath was more or less clean, dotted with benches and gazebos and its walls had carved fish and other motifs. I thought that reflected the pride the government and the people took in displaying their culture.
On the way from the Fish market, you can first snap a picture of the map provided so that you know how far along the toilets and restaurants will be. Walk along, admire the sea, the birds, take some rest at a gazebo. Turn your eyes to the other side of the road and spot this really cool house with a turquoise blue balcony on the other side, a very beautiful mosque, the Mutrah souq and its spillout shops and even spot a fort or two far in the distance.
Eventually, the sun will get too much to handle and the scenery on one side might get monotonous, so cross to the other side, eat at any of the super over-priced eateries or enter the Mutrah souq and grab some snacks from small shops. I happened to use two different toilets at the Souq on different occasions and I have to say, the public washrooms were exceptionally clean! Water, paper towels, soap - all provided for free. I had such respect for their sanitation workers.
If you continue walking along towards Al Alam Palace, you will find yourself admiring some nice mosques on the way, a whole open-air gym area, some more gazebos and lots of private residences.
At one point, I didn't have much water on me, when I spotted a water dispenser machine installed for public use by a private resident. That was so, so thoughtful. True charity. And they even had gorgeous plants right outside.
On your way, you will find yourself walking a path lined with many palm trees and sloping lawns and greenery which is being painstakingly nurtured through drip irrigation in this hot country. We saw a slightly poor-looking Omani couple having a picnic in one of such relaxing spots. Eventually, we spotted some more families too.
We did see an eco-toilet, but it was shut and I anyway wouldn't prefer to use it. Also, we passed a sort of amusement park with rides and such on a slightly elevated area. That might be an attraction in the evenings, if travelling with kids.
The cars pass really fast and there are blind turns at a section, so remember to be extremely careful if crossing the road. In the evenings, a particular stretch of the corniche, the non-crowded one, seemed to have eco-bikes and segues for rent. Unfortunately, we missed that experience due to lack of time.
Anyway, one also passes the Muscat Gate, an impressive structure which happens to house a museum as well. The shrubbery in the road divider is also well-manicured. It was very pleasant to have had this walk.
Once we crossed the Muscat Gate, soon enough we had reached a roundabout from where Bait Al Zubair, the Omani and French Museum, the National Museum, Al Alam Palace and Al Mirani Portuguese Fort were just a few minutes away. We also saw various government buildings, looking so dignified and classy in their muted whites with brown traditional balconies.
If you are a solo traveller or a couple, and love to see a place on foot, then I highly recommend this walk. Remember, at any time, you can just take a bus passing by (strict schedules, the charts are usually available at the bus stops) if you are too tired.

Hi S, the walk is about 3 kms through what was the container port until last year. Not pretty. Seems to me there are shuttle buses all the time from the cruise ships down onto the Corniche. Drop off point is where the old souk opens onto the Corniche. At that spot there are abundant taxis plus the big bus hop on hop off service. See my review of Old Muttrah Souk for time to visit & what else to do. PS.. taxi's in Oman have no meter and haggling is essential before you get in. Look for a 40% discount on initial asking price.
